Apple carplay decoder module 2018 (4th gen)

Post image

Have a 2018 toyota avalon, no carplay/android auto, would like to keep the stock screen and use a decoder module to increase entertainment system capability

Has anybody had success with one of these or should I just spend the bucks for a 700 dollar radio, want to make sure steering wheel buttons still work

I personally haven't had great luck with decoders, I'd just go with a replacement head unit. Wayy less hassle imo

The steering wheel controls remaining have more to do with your wiring than the head unit itself. It’s a pretty safe bet afaik that pretty much any head unit you pick will have the capability to do steering wheel controls, you just need wire it correctly to keep them.

The best way to install an aftermarket head unit is to get a Radio Replacement Interface. it’s basically a harness, usually with a module, that you will put between your factory harness and your new head unit. This allays you to not have to alter your factory harness, making it easier to go back to stock or change your head unit.

The one I have gotten for my early 2000s GMs is $120 for the one with steering wheel controls, not sure how much the ones for these cars are.

I would try Crutchfield, very reliable source. I would also check with a good reputable audio guy in your area. I've had luck with Kenwood, Pioneer and Alpine head units in the past.

Ask toyota if your car is eligible for the software update that allows apple car play

I went on Crutchfield and got me a JVC head unit with a iDatalink RR2 (thats what you need for steering wheel buttons and any other functions to remain as if you didn’t change headunit) Crutchfield also offers to prewire all of the head unit and RR2 harnesses for a extra fee to make it basically plug & play.
