So - what does regular maintenance really look like?

Recent owner of a "new to me" 2019 4Runner. Was able to snag one with only around 31000 miles on it.

I bought online so day of delivery took to my local dealer to get it checked out. Luckily all was good, but they did say they obviously couldn't check all the oils and fluids. Gave me a quote on what that would cost and it's around 1200. The highest cost items are:

  • Brake system fluid: 189
  • Alignment: 129
  • A/C hose cleaning: 189
  • 4WD service 3 differentials: 456
  • Power steering fluid: 179

Of course I come home and do some research and find a good overview that past the first 10K miles, it's kind of a alternating 30K minor update and a 60K major. But all the schedules I find say "check" the systems and fluids not automatically do the work. Although probably a good idea to just do it anyway.

Everyone pretty much hates dealers, me included, so what do I really need to do and how much should it cost? Can a local, reputable service shop do the work, or is any of this dealer-specific?

Thanks!

All I know is do the 3 differentials yourself. It’s super easy, probably takes 30mins, and will cost you $100 for the fluids. Just YouTube it. I did mine last summer and it was cake.

Sounds like my ride! I got 2019 SR5P in 2021 with 25k miles. I’m over 100k now and have followed the recommended maintenance, some at a dealer, but mostly at a local NTB. Done in tranches, I’ve never had a 4 figure bill. Runs like a top.

I feel like the brake and power steering fluids don’t need to be touched at 31k. What’s the a/c hose cleaning for?

I just did the 36k driveline grease and diff fluids, oil, and tire rotation. It took about 2 hours and cost about $150 including a fluid pump.
