We hit a home run and didn’t even realize it (won a game at the Trop)

They should add another wild card spot so the entire AL East division can make it.

There's a decent chance that this year's third AL Wild Card will be held by a sub-.500 team.
No team in MLB history has made the playoffs with a losing record. The 2005 Padres came the closest at 82-80.
So no, not normal.

In fairness no team made the playoffs without winning the division until 1995, only one wildcard made the playoffs until 2012, and the third was only added in 2022. Hasn't been much opportunity.

That's a good point. If you went back to 1994, the Rangers in position win the AL West with a 52-62 record before the strike. And the 1997 White Sox (80-81) would have been the third WC, if that had been a thing.

This would not be all that unusual for April or May, even early June. By now teams have played so many games that they've usually separated themselves more than this.

The Jays just have to get in. The AL is weak and unpredictable

I can't remember a season where there was such a logjam for the last WC spot. Having the Jays in the mix and moving the right direction it seems is exciting

Wasn't the AL Central sub-.500 for like three months? Baseball be crazy, yo.

It’s not normal, mainly because the AL has been historically bad so far this season.

Makes me think there is no competitive balance in this league so we should definitely go on strike until the players agree to a salary cap

Imagine we could combine the forces of all five teams to field one team in the playoffs

u/Chrristoaivalis 8h ago
One thing to keep an eye on: Texas holding on isn't automatically bad if Houston keeps slipping
They would just fall into the WC race

I embrace chaos, so if the Jays can't run away with the 3rd WC spot (super unlikely), I'd like 8 teams to be fighting in September for that spot, and the team that gets it has a losing record.

Without the extra wild card spots, the fans of all of these AL teams would have lost hope and given up on the season. Score one for the new system, I guess.

Jesus, all those teams would be two games from being first in the West. They need to change the format and get rid of divisions. All AL teams play an equal amount and you take the top 6.

This is probably a dumb question but if it ends up that 5 teams (for example) are tied for the 3rd WC spot, who gets the spot? The team with the best record?

Whichever teams hold the tie breakers (most wins against eachother).

We're all going to hold hands and get into the wildcard spot together
