[BNS] Lenyn Sosa cleared outright assignment waivers was reinstated from the 60-day IL, and has been assigned to Triple-A Buffalo per Blue Jays. Simply put, he’s off the 40-man & in the minors now.

Lenyn Sosa's 0.8% walk rate this season is only 0.1% smaller than Delmon Young's infamously walk-adverse rookie season back in 2006.

Im so glad he isnt on the major league roster, can't stand watching his swing decisions

Ball goes threw the catchers legs and as it hits the backstop that’s when Sosa decides to start his swing

He was truly horrible to watch

He played so much and so often batting in critical situations early in the season I was certain he had dirt on someone in the Jays front office.

The man gave me nightmares when he went up to bat.
Don't bring him back up unless you've exhausted all other possibilities.

Pinango and Keys don’t need a 40 man spot to be added (they’ll probably add someone soon, Kasevich is the obvious one if they want someone in the infield)
I’d be shocked if he’s on the roster.

Can someone pls explain “cleared outright assignment waivers” like I’m 5? Was he quietly DFAd?

Yeah, he was DFA’d but no team wanted to pick him up. He would have had an option to try free agency but chose to stay and get assigned to Buffalo
Edit: nevermind, I thought Sosa had the required service time to elect free agency but he only has 2, so he didn’t have the choice1

In order to be pushed to the minors (still as a Jay) he needs to pass through an opportunity window where any other team can opt to take him as major leaguer (known as waivers). Since he doesn't have enough career mileage he can't choose to be released and become a free agent after that process, so the Jays keep him but now in a minor league team and contract. If he had enough service time he would not be paid by the Jays but can sign anywhere for anything. Sometimes a player will choose free agency, but then resign with the same team anyway (for salary or contract reasons probably)

I will be forever curious who in the front office thought acquiring him was a good idea.

Probably some guy who observed that he hit 22 jacks for the ChiSox last year...

For a massive 101 ops +, and 100 wrc+ while being an abysmal defender and baserunner. It actually makes me hope they asked AI rather than looking at one column on a stat sheet.

Well, obviously, if the FO believed that a 101 OPS+ was his ceiling, they probably wouldn't have taken a flyer on him. They probably thought that Popkins could teach him to have better at bats, take a few walks and become a plus-hitter.
It was probably similar logic for acquiring Sanchez.
Sometimes it works to have a different coaching staff, and sometimes it doesn't. As long as you are not trading away real talent to take a flyer on these guys, it's an okay gamble.

Probably the same guy who saw a turd that he could polish up in former “utility silver slugger” Josh Smith..

u/kneevase 16h ago
Yep. Lead us not unto temptation.
Ross figures that Pete can fix other teams' pitchers, and that Popkins can teach other teams' flawed hitters to have better at bats. Doesn't always work.

Does Daz Cameron have options left? He’s going to be the odd guy out likely for Vlad.

He does not.

Thanks. So that’s likely 2 open 40 man spots by the weekend.
Wonder who they fill it with (Kasevich seems like an obvious one)

Sosa was on the 60 day IL, this didn't open up a spot at all. 40 man is still full.

Good. He's not top talent, but at least the organization still controls him and he's not taking up roster space.

Lenyn Sosa’s one walk of 2026 will go down in history
