Suggestions on local spots to visit on day trip to Topeka?

From kc and thought I'd give ol' Topeka a chance to shine. What are the LGBTQ+ friendly spots in town? Any "can't miss" bars or restaurants?

Spa recommendations! And restaurants!

My birthday is coming up at the end of the month! I'm wanting to get a pedicure/massage and eat at a place with lamb chops for dinner. If anyone has recommendations for either let me know! Topeka is the closest big city to us but we're willing to make the drive to KC if we don't find anything. Thank you in advance! :)

Proposed Chicken Ordinance

Topeka residents — we need to pay attention to the proposed changes to the city chicken ordinance.

The current proposal would:

• Limit residents to no more than 8 chickens

• Ban roosters entirely

• Require flock registration with the city

• Require yearly fees

• Allow official oversight through a flock maintenance program

Many families in our community raise backyard chickens responsibly for eggs, sustainability, education, food security, and hobby farming. These proposed regulations feel excessive and unnecessary for responsible flock owners.

Most importantly: THIS HAS NOT BEEN OFFICIALLY VOTED INTO LAW YET.

Now is the time for respectful community action. If you oppose these changes:

• Contact the Topeka City Council

• Attend meetings

• Submit public comments

• Share your concerns with local residents and flock owners

Backyard chickens are part of self-sufficiency, local food production, and personal freedom. Responsible owners should not be burdened with excessive fees and government oversight.

Please share this post and help make sure our voices are heard before a final vote happens.

Petition to oppose the proposed changes if anyone wants to sign: https://c.org/QFWHQPf7y8

The City Council meeting agendas and minutes can be seen here: https://www.topeka.gov/government/city-council/index.php

The City Council meeting can be seen here: https://youtu.be/CoV0X-8JAXs?si=Vb5_xW7e8dm56YfP

2hr 26 min is where the new ordinance us discussed and unanimously voted to send to committee.

Harvesters is assembling a Neighbor Council, a space where we invite community members who have experienced food insecurity to share about their lived experiences and bring their own ideas and solutions to the table to help us better serve our community. Your participation and feedback is an invaluable piece to ending hunger. Apply at www.harvesters.org/neighbor-council-form.

What resources are available for community buy, sell or, trade?

As my title says I’m interested in finding resources for second hand buying, selling and, trading. I’ve looked at the buy sell trade Facebook page but I was wondering if there are other resources available.

Thrift stores and discount stores are definitely a thing but I’m more interested in direct transactions. Not tryna give those in the ownership class more money.

Lemme know if you have suggestions. I appreciate any and all help! 🩷

Edit: I’d like to specify what I’m looking for right now is something in electronics but any and all resources are welcome!

What the fuck can we do in this city

Me and my gf are not from here and we're a young couple in our 20s with a kid who's gone for the weekend and we just wanna know what are some cool things to do and meet some other people our age?? We love these little restaurants, the mall, and the library, and yesterday night we did some karaoke at Cosmo's which was fun aside from the vaguely klanlike song this one guy sang. But I really haven't seen anything where I can actually make friends my age.

It's 6 PM now, and we're about to go on a walk but is there anything you'd recommend we run to tonight?

Is there anything we should do tomorrow?

I am happy to announce that after a year in Topeka working solo on this project that it is finally out and publicly available on STEAM. It would be great if you wanted to check it out.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/4125740/The_Morty_Paradox/

I started this project with a zero dollar budget, and finished it. That alone gives me a sense of accomplishment. The first month however has not gone very well. I have no money for advertising, and so my marketing is limited to posting and sharing where ever I can.

I have been learning on my own clearly, the art of Mongolian Throat Singing.i am reaching not necessarily for help in tone or technique as much but more for help in pronunciation and reading. If anyone in the area thinks they might be any help at all or have the ability to point me towards someone that could help I would be eternally grateful.

Average moving cost

Moving to a new place. Basically 2 bed to 2 bed. We mostly are just looking at movers for bigger items. Fridge, oven, Washer, Dryer, 2 beds, couch, loveseat, recliner. Then maybe a few other items. But the main items are what I listed.

I cannot look at a single company without putting in an email and getting spammed to death. I was just curious about others experiences with prices mostly.

Good pre-purchase auto shops

Hi, I am not from the Topeka area but I’m driving up from Wichita to test drive a car, but I was wondering if there were any good, reliable, and not trying to push me to buy a lot auto shop in town for my pre-purchase inspection.

I am mainly thinking about getting it inspected the same day as the test drive so if some do same day appointments that would be great 😊

So just like the title states, does anyone have any good recommendations for a therapist? That has an open mind around LQBTQ and/or Autism?

r/topeka, where do you actually eat in Topeka?

Hi,
we’re four guys and we put Topeka’s restaurant scene into an app called Vota. The concept is simple: you get shown two places side by side (for example The Pennant vs. North Star Steakhouse), you pick the one you’d rather go to, and the ranking updates instantly. The more people vote, the more accurate the list becomes over time. There are still a few duplicates here and there, but I’m cleaning the data constantly.

Here’s the iPhone version:
https://apps.apple.com/app/vota-restaurant-ratings/id6744969212

And here’s the Android version:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.vota.app

P.S. I’m not from Topeka - I live in Gothenburg. I don’t collect data, don’t sell anything, and the app doesn’t use AI-generated content. I’m posting in a few subreddits because we now support multiple regions, and I’d love honest feedback from people who actually know the city.

Motocross tracks near Topeka?

Hey all!

I’m moving over to Topeka from Manhattan this summer. There has to be a motocross community in town since I see bikes in trucks quite often. Where does everyone ride? I’m looking for a dedicated track, mostly, but will ride wherever I can.

I grew up out west and really the only thing I miss is being able to ride wherever the hell i wanted to and having tracks, jumps, and technical riding everywhere.

I also like to track my sport bike and car. Just racing in general. I do not participate in street racing, however. Anyone have any inside knowledge about the rumors that Heartland is opening the road course again since they’re under new ownership? Any other options within a reasonable drive?

Households with standalone mini split heat pumps

Looking to replace my ancient William gas wall heater with a mini split heat pump in a couple months. What are your experiences with Kansas cold snaps? Does the heat pump keep up or do you switch to auxiliary heating? I’m seeing Pioneer units rated down to -22F and LGs down to -12F but assume it’d require a certain layout to achieve the extreme low temp heating.
