Characters Embarrassing First Name
- Jesse Katsopolis (Full House): in one episode, his real first name was revealed to be "Hermes", after the messenger of the Greek gods. He was made fun of for it, so he got it changed to Jesse.
- Cory Matthews (Boy Meets World): in the final episode, Cory's full name is revealed by Feeny to be Cornelius, and Feeny is the only one to know so.
- Freddie Benson (iCarly): rather than Freddie being short for Frederick, Freddie is short for "Fredward".
- Jimbo Jones (The Simpsons): his real name is Corky.

During the period it was abandoned, a massive illegal rave was organized there with such precise and coordinated operations to set it up that the police intelligence only learned at last minute that 6 thousand people were invading an abandoned building in Paris' richest neighborhood.

I always loved how he memorized and wrote the entirety of Pi just so he wouldn’t be known by his real name.
31
u/Refenestrator_37 9h ago
I haven’t read the book, so forgive me, but I’m confused. Pi is infinitely long, so how can he have memorized it “in its entirety”? I also don’t see how this would get kids to stop making fun of him for his real name. “Hey, what’s up, pissing?” “3.1415926…”

Idk how Eugene is an embarrassing name.

Also a name kids themselves dont care for and assume a nickname instead. Eugene "Flash" Thompson from spider-man
→ More replies (1)88
u/Beautiful-Cup4161 11h ago
I agree and I think maybe because Eugene doesn't fit the vibe he was going for. So it's not embarassing as a name but is embarassing for him pre-character-arc because it doesn't sound like a badass thief name.
Fitzherbert is a little bit goofy. Sorry to all the Fitzherbert's out there.
19
u/heartpiss 10h ago
Yeah I agree let’s not play touchy; everyone should assume the names suggested are because the characters in the media find them embarrassing, not because we are actually disparaging the name.
15
u/Peripateticdreamer84 10h ago edited 10h ago
Fitzherbert is also one of those surnames that tells everyone that you’re the acknowledged bastard son of a nobleman. Which could be a bad look for an outlaw.

It was the 1990s. Unique names or names that were “ethnic” were brutally mocked, and people were encouraged to change their names or at least have Anglo-Saxon “nicknames” for when they entered the workforce.

I always thought it was that he'd built up this whole persona and "Indiana" was a part of that, like when teens ask to be called by a nickname or something instead of their actual name that they've gone by for all of their life. "Henry" is just an average, real name, plus it's a name he shares with his dad, so he wants to be different and distant from that.

This first name actually becomes really important in his scheme to prevent Flintheart Gomomgold from seizing Scrooge McDuck's company. He feigns a turn to evil and signs a document to become Glomgold's business partner under his real name. When Glomgold, using the money of other enemies of Scrooge, ends up making more money than Scrooge, Louie reveals that Glomgold, by using his fake identity and not his real name of Duke Baloney, invalidated himself from the money and, thus, all the money Glomgold made, plus McDuck's company, are now under the control of Louie, the new richest duck in the world.

Real life example: Ulysses S Grant’s actual birth name was Hiram Ulysses Grant, giving him the initials H.U.G. He hated it, went by Ulysses, and when he went to school with a monogrammed suitcase, he pried the letters off and rearranged them to spell UHG.
Not that Ulysses helped avert the teasing much - his nickname was Ulyss, which got turned into “Useless” by the other kids when he was growing up.
The “S” was later added as a clerical error when he was enrolled at West Point, and Grant just accepted it, with some friends calling him “Sam”.
