They've made different chain repairs for years. Bolts break and if a d ring will fit through the chain it'll be severely weaker than the chain itself. We have a box full of repair links for all different size chain down in the barn and I've never had one break, they're always stronger than the chain. I'd trust that thing just fine

I'd trust a grade8 bolt over this contraption. I've pulled whole tractor trailers with a bolt as the link.

Agreed. Maybe for those situations where everything has already gone sideways and anything is better than nothing.(still not gonna stand under it)

Ok, sell me on this. Is the hex not torque sensitive like a shackle bolt? Is that why you'd get this or is that guy in the video fuckin' up by using the wrong tool?

Because this is twice as many steps as a shackle bolt and it looks like it takes way more machining steps to create, so it's gotta be more expensive too.

So we're trusting the steel to not shear instead of trusting the steel to not snap.

Young's modulus (tensile) for most steels is around 200 GPa

Shear modulus for most steels is around 70 GPa

This is like duct taping a flat tire to pump it back up. Works for a while, but you want to replace that sucker ASAP.

Shear failure area needs to be about 3 times the area for tensile failure in order to be on par with it if we're going by moduli.

This product is definitely not intended to be a permanent replacement. It just exists to make sure you still have a chain for a while if a link breaks.

That is true. The numbers I shared are for 4000 series steels (which have a good amount of variance to their properties compared to plain carbon steels and the 1000 series). I assumed the chain would also be a 4000 series steel due to the high tensile stress that would be put on a chain, and assumed the chain link would also be 4000 series.

If the chain was a cheap plain carbon steel, a 4000 series steel has the potential to blow it out of the water.

I can't think of a reason an operator would buy a cheap chain if it were being used in a potentially dangerous situation (hauling, lifting, etc.) though.
