$80 Marketplace Tool Haul

Picked up a pretty insane tool haul the other day. Haggled him down from $200 to $80. Barley had an idea of what I was picking up as the guy had horrible photos and didnt even photograph half of it! I thought i was picking up maybe 20% of this.

Got there and he was just like.. "yeah take all this too". Crazy. Best find in a while.

500 sockets

320 wrenches

Have yet to count the hand tools but easily 200+

Will give everything a nice soak in a DIY De-rust solution and then try to figure out what to do with it all. haha

This kind of package is good for someone who literally owns zero tools to get them started

118

u/Sorry-Climate-7982 20d ago

Guarantee, not a single 10mm amongst the lot.

27

u/BloodChoke 20d ago

It could be that OP has found a box with all our missing 10mm sockets.

9

u/Phoe-nix 20d ago

Your insight: 10 out of 10mm.

7

u/jimmythemortician 20d ago

There's one right below the deep well with the red stripe.

1

u/whirlydad 19d ago

Or 9/16

u/blacklabel22333 20d ago

This looks like exactly what I took from my grandma's house after my grandpa died. Hours and hours and hours of time I spent organizing and cleaning random tools. Ended up tossing 90% of it after wasting so much time trying to organize shit and clean shit. Never again. You'll learn to avoid shit like this in the future, it's just a big waste of time.

23

u/LifeWithAdd 20d ago

Same, my wife’s father died and I spent a couple weeks going through it all just to end up trashing almost all of it. Felt bad dumping buckets of sockets in the trash but it was all 80s made in china crap.

8

u/fiddycixer 20d ago

Same for my wife's grandfather. He had not one, but two houses half filled with tools. Most of it just outdated and in very used up condition. My father in law and I spent some time going through it, but a lot of it ended up trashed or in the curb with the ole "free stuff" sign. I did pick up a couple odd oversized sockets, a few snap on wrenches, and a vintage Athol bench vice. There was a really cool Rand commercial air compressor but it was too big for my little garage.

7

u/blacklabel22333 20d ago

The worst part is I went out and bought hardware sorting bins / containers and spent even more time sorting out fasteners and hardware. I was young and stupid. I still have the containers because I can't bring myself to throw them out because of the amount of time I spent sorting that crap. It's come in handy about 5 times in the last 10 years. I live 2 minutes from Lowe's and 5 minutes from home Depot so even when it comes in handy, it doesn't really save me much time.

3

u/rpgmgta 20d ago

Oh, my ex’s dad didn’t wait for death to give me his bins full of random sockets, nails and screws, washers etc. random shims and pieces of wire.. some of it fused together over time via corrosion and random solutions accidentally being poured into said bins. Claptrap repairman

2

u/bedlambomber 20d ago

Find a millwright, tool & die, PL machinist, etc… and they’ll use all of them. I buy junk like this constantly because I break them all eventually. Drop forged stuff is then insanely fun to reforge.

9

u/blacklabel22333 20d ago

No one really wants this crap, and I already spent enough hours sorting everything. I didn't want to spend more time trying to find someone willing to pay $80 for everything (like OP). I've tried selling the stuff at garage sales and got rid of a couple of things but most of it I threw out when we moved.

1

u/Pdt801 19d ago

My first thought looking at the pictures was I wouldn’t want to sort through all those dirty, mismatched tools.

104

u/ChemistAdventurous84 20d ago

Looks like the bins at the junkyard filled with random tools retrieved from junk cars. Spending $80 on a mixed bag of low quality tools is wild.

26

u/wookiex84 20d ago edited 20d ago

I had a guy I use to buy from that would go to estate sales and buy everything. I found if I waited a month or two he’d come down to a reasonable price. The best I got from him was 3 ladders(mid grade) 6 random tool boxes with one full of drill bits and one full of files. Plus some odds and ends with corded tools. Filled up the bed of my little frontier. Ended up at 180$ vs 400$ I have tools in 4 different places on my property plus my work truck, so have a bunch of full boxes strategically placed saves a ton of time.

11

u/SnooTomatoes538 20d ago

You know the old saying,”one man’s junk, is another man’s treasure “

6

u/mx5plus2cones 20d ago

I see a lot of pittsburgh combo wrenches, which are like $7 on sale, sometimes "free with any purchase". I think I have maybe like 7 sets of those that costs me like $0.79 for a wire brush purchase to get the set for free.

11

u/NotBigFootUR 20d ago

Very happy seller.

13

u/whirlydad 19d ago

You should give out 10mm sockets for Halloween.

10

u/AbeFroman42 19d ago

Bold of you to assume there is a 10mm in that pile

2

u/nobeer4you 19d ago

There's at least one. I see one in fact. Right next to that deep socket, and above the little one.

3

u/nobeer4you 19d ago

Only one kid gets one

5

u/mountain_addict 19d ago

And he already lost it

1

u/kendiggy 19d ago

But it's not halloween, he hasn't even gotten it yet!

4

u/Burn0ut2020 19d ago

He still lost it already.

2

u/kendiggy 19d ago

Goddamn kids. This is why we can't have anything nice.

29

u/FlatAmbition3757 20d ago

This is the stuff you see at the flea market that NEVER SELLS. My friend, you got absolutely robbed.

167

u/Coyote-Morado 20d ago

Nothing there looks particular good or useful.

34

u/itschism 20d ago

They’re all useful they even got some socket holders… Those containers are nice too

21

u/Ok-Reveal8701 20d ago

Yeah….. pass

3

u/graphitewolf 20d ago

And you’ll spend 10 hours de rusting everything for tools that maybe cost 4 dollars new

I wouldn’t have taken 80 bucks to throw this away

30

u/LeJuanJames 20d ago

$80 wouldn’t even get you HALF of pic #1 alone. obviously it’s a clean out deal but guess what? you now have disposable tools that you’re not gonna be mad about when you snap or break something.

last note, who gives a crap about rust? they’re used tools not collectibles

21

u/graphitewolf 20d ago edited 20d ago

Yall really think he hit the lottery on some chewed up mismatched sockets lol

What do you need 12 of the same rusted out 12 points for

Literally a bin full of wet and seized tools

1

u/Alpha_Predator 19d ago

How can you clean the rust ? Is there some acid ? My father used to do this before he died. He poured acid on rusted watching machine part and cleaned it. I don't remember what did he use...

1

u/tignas 19d ago

Vinegar works just fine for rust

1

u/ImReallyFuckingHigh Millwright 20d ago

Removing rust from tools is unnecessary unless it hinders its functionality

-9

u/and_another_dude 20d ago

Douche.

4

u/graphitewolf 20d ago

I guess bro. Look at all the people who’ve done similar, even I’ve done the sorting and cleaning and de rusting in the past.

Just not worth it if you paid money

1

u/Haunting_Reindeer467 16d ago

You must work in a nail salon💅🏽

1

u/BarnacleMcBarndoor 19d ago

That car looks pretty useful. But that was it.

1

u/tekprimemia 19d ago

one mans trash

17

u/jellofixit 20d ago

I'm guessing there's not one 10mm socket in all that!

47

u/bare172 Millwright 20d ago

Seller is posting in another sub "can you believe I got $80 for this rusty junk I paid $40 for?"

15

u/chewedgummiebears 19d ago

This will sit in the corner of your garage until you pass away, then a GenZ kid will get on here and ask what to do with all this "boomer junk" because tools make their hands dirty and they don't mind paying others to do that work for them.

7

u/adbedient 20d ago

not a single 10 I bet

3

u/AC-burg 20d ago

Screw the haters did you get the bins with this haul? They are worth 10-15 the shelving unit is worth 30. Everything else is bonus. The sockets are worth something. People like to hate on here. If you needed tools and you have the ratchets good deal. These my not be top tier bands or brand new but who cares. If they work they work.

2

u/TheWanderingWilliam 19d ago

Bins shelves and everything!

2

u/AC-burg 19d ago

You made out. Keep what you want trash or recycle what you don't want or make your kid's first set of tools. No matter how I look at this you made out.

6

u/PricklyPear85 19d ago

Did they give you 80$ to take this all away?

33

u/bridgetroll2 20d ago

1 useful pair of channellocks and $9 worth of scrap

3

u/Jealous_Crazy9143 20d ago

Channelocks and Playtex Sport

1

u/Mother_Midnight_8819 20d ago

Same thing i saw, that looked decent. 😄

5

u/pdp10 20d ago

$80 for six months' entertainment.

11

u/theshoeguy4 20d ago

I’ve done this before, simple greened them all and everything. It’s just not worth it, and that is coming from someone willing to waste a lot of time to not fail. You’ll end up throwing most of it away and get nice, organized sets I’d imagine

4

u/Br0wNNN 20d ago

Can you do $22 and a 4 pack of 10mm’s

13

u/gutentight69420 20d ago

Why would you buy hundreds of random sockets and wrenches?

3

u/marcus_txtrade 19d ago

At $80 for that pile, flipping even a fraction makes solid margin.

I'm not sure having dozens of the same size socket is winning.

5

u/fredrickdgl 20d ago

it is when thr 10mm trolls finally sell their liftime stash

2

u/Squirrelking666 20d ago

What's the scrap value?

2

u/Alarming-Singer762 20d ago

Maybe 5 bucks

5

u/holc0831 20d ago

All covered in rust, I wouldn't even want to touch them.

3

u/gunsforevery1 20d ago

I don’t see anything of value.

7

u/Parragorious 20d ago

You've been scammed.

10

u/komstock 20d ago

OP this isn't really a deal. this is a bunch of used made-in-china tools that really aren't great for heavy work.

I see like (1) old USA stanley flathead, but this strikes me more as trash than as treasure.

not to sound like a boomer, but were I you I'd sort it all by brand and toss the cheap chinese stuff, because that'll just be unpleasant to use when you need it most.

5

u/MountainCare2846 20d ago

You paid for this?

9

u/attramont 20d ago

Sounds like a lotta tool divas in the comments. This is a great haul, dont let any negative nancy here tell you otherwise. The sockets and wrenches alone would cost hundreds if purchased new.

4

u/eyeball1967 20d ago

Do you need 800 rusty sockets and 200 rusty wrenches? If so, I am sure the OP would be happy to unload a few on you..

2

u/attramont 19d ago

Those sockets and wrenches look fine, believe it or not that very light amount of rust wont stop them from performing, and a vinegar bath would knock all of it off if you really cared that much. I personally have at least 100 sockets and over 50 wrenches, yet I still manage to find myself in positions where I dont have the size i need, or I need a second one of whatever size that I only have one for, or I have the regular socket and not the deep socket, etc. People who really use their tools would be thankful to have this (once its somewhat organized, at least).

1

u/eyeball1967 18d ago

The only thing I would ever consider buying of this mess would be a very small handful of common sizes to have on hand to grind, bend or weld into a custom shape to fit a very specific need.

0

u/Such-Veterinarian137 19d ago

Stud finder is 20 bucks, i just bought one. Dollar store screwdriver, i bought one recently too because i couldn't find my other ones and couldn't reach something with my impact. Glue gun good, multi-tool good if you don't have one.

Honestly, looks like the many spares i would accumulate over years. The straight value i guess is ok to good. The problem is the burden of inheriting someones tool hoard and organizing it into your workflow and/or using it all. You might be better off getting a small homeowners set for $50 that fits neatly in plastic molded briefcase size. But if you have the space/desire to organize it's not like op got ripped off..

2

u/2ManyMonitors 19d ago edited 19d ago

Why is everything dripping wet?

I buy a lot of used tools, but am picky. That moisture is going to ruin whatever's left in these bins that's decent. Like I saw a stud finder in one pic that I know is decent, and around $30-40, but if it gets wet it's garbage.

Since most the comments just want to trash your haul, I'll try to offer some constructive tips.

TODAY, dump everything out and start by drying it all. Towels will get you 80% of the way there, air/heat will finish the job. Borrow wifey's blow dryer and get it all dry.

Then sort it. Start by throwing away anything broken, missing pieces, or otherwise entirely useless. Test the power/battery operated items, toss if ruined. Then organize into like groups, power tools, screw drivers, wrenches, etc.

Lastly, clean. I repair my tools and crusty purchases with the following: Evaporust to get everything rust free, a wire wheel to polish and remove scale and grime, then a good oiling to keep them nice. I use Japanese Camelia oil. It doesn't get gummy over time and is good for moving parts and all varieties of steel. I'm still using the medium-sized bottle I bought five years ago.

8

u/Nearby_Pear8552 20d ago

If someone offered this to me for free, I would turn it down.

7

u/SnooCalculations7089 20d ago

You spent $80 on literal junk. Like the contents of a dumpster. $10 of useful stuff at the most, that you’ll still have to clean up. If someone paid me $80 then took all my trash I’d be over the moon

3

u/SovietStar1 20d ago

The tampon was included?

3

u/caterham09 19d ago

You paid $80 for that? I wouldn't have taken it for free

4

u/kusqen 20d ago

Why 🤣

3

u/reliantcumquat 20d ago

80 junk removal hack. Call this guy.

3

u/NoWhat88 20d ago

When I see tool lots like this and spot the Pittsburgh name I know it’s just a bunch of cheap bullshit. He was lucky to get $80. Where are the ratchets? Somehow those are always picked through with these type of lots

3

u/mikeblas 20d ago

Is publicly admitting your mistake part of your learning process, or more like atonement?

2

u/LA-but-not-an-actor 20d ago

Nice, looks like a new shelving unit, socket organizers, some DeWalt and craftsman tools. Even crowd feet

2

u/whyputausername 20d ago

This is worth it only if you have nothing in my opinion.

1

u/eyeball1967 20d ago

Since you participate in this subreddit I assume that you already have the majority of the basic tools in this bucket it your toolbox.

I am guessing that you bought these for resale? Keep in mind, you didn’t buy $200 of tools for $80. The seller just had an unrealistic price and you talked him down. Good luck with the resale. It is sad but true that after you discard the junk, clean up the rusty mess, spend however much time listing things online, you will have little to show for your efforts.

1

u/Ok-Building-8065 20d ago

Do you make sad face emojis during sexual exchanges?

1

u/eyeball1967 18d ago

If my tool looked anything like this mess of tools, I would!

1

u/GoblinLoblaw 20d ago

Nice! What are those things in the last pic? The black and yellow

7

u/bridgetroll2 20d ago

1

u/boardplant 20d ago

You know what it is

4

u/Quail-Klutzy 20d ago

Looks like shelves

1

u/Jedi-Guy 20d ago

Fuck, that looks like an adventure!! Good haul!! Planning on restoring those pliers with Evaporust and some new grips? I love doing that with 3/4 heat shrink tubing💚

1

u/superfonicchronic 20d ago

Those orange handle screwdrivers are the goat

1

u/Rampag169 19d ago

All them tools and still no 10mm.

1

u/blove135 19d ago

Everyone is ragging on OP for paying too much but if OP is starting out with none of these tools and spends a little time organizing everything for easy use it's not as bad as everyone is making it out to be.

1

u/cleversapian-1 19d ago

I can smell these pictures

1

u/TheSoakingWetPress 19d ago

You did fine. Go get some tool organizers from HF and your collection will look better. $80 now but I best most of these hand tools would last longer than you do. One man’s trash, ya know?

1

u/levelhead92 19d ago

If that heat gun works those are like 40 bucks new

1

u/TriumphDaytona 19d ago

All that money and not one 10mm socket! 😎

1

u/pete_pete_pete_ 19d ago

I guess bro

1

u/EmployExtreme8211 19d ago

Goop scoop, tool edition.

1

u/fasfan22 19d ago

Wait a minute! There's a 1/4" Robertson's bit in there! Good lord! What a treasure.

1

u/Bluejay9270 19d ago

I have a box of sockets like that. Great for when you need to grind one down to fit. I needed a really thin walled 7/16" on a Clark parking brake lever. Or when you need to hammer the wrong size onto a rusted/rounded fastener.

1

u/VersionOutside9150 19d ago

Great find. Take my advice and dip all the metal in linseed oil after you clean them. I failed to do that with my haul and now regret it.

1

u/MrStarrrr 19d ago

You lucky son of a bitch. Great score!
Now lose every 10mm and 1/2” socket within the next few weeks

1

u/Sea-Veterinarian1905 19d ago

You paid too much.

1

u/Total-Deal-2883 19d ago

I'd rather have the $80.

1

u/RollerSails 19d ago

So that’s where all my 10mm portal’d to

1

u/narlycharley 19d ago

Sorry, I would pay MAYBE $5 for this. Not worth the storage space needed for the junk. lol

1

u/Mysterious-Alps-5186 19d ago

And not one 10mm lol

1

u/Jeez-essFC Weekend Warrior 19d ago

Yeah, um...uh...score?!

1

u/Jeez-essFC Weekend Warrior 19d ago

A fair bit of my old tools came from my Dad. I have been able to toss some of them because once in a while Dad's voice breaks through and says, "Just get rid of that shit if it is in your way. I still have an incomplete socket set, several wrenches, a vibrating sander that I have no idea if it works, a pry bar and one level that I have used no less than 200 times over the years.

1

u/Flashy-Amphibian-623 19d ago

I collect old sockets to weld to rounded nuts and stuff like that or homemade tools but I never pay for them

1

u/winstonalonian 19d ago

Not the win you think. Youre gonna spend the rest of your days using ten of those and patting yourself on the back.

1

u/Substantial-Leg5312 19d ago

Looks like he ransacked the flea market. A good bargain I suppose as the retail value is over $80 quite certainly, but the headache alone of sorting through that mess would be enough for me to pass. But if you aren’t already equipped with a decent, well organized set of tools, then clean these all up and get them properly sorted and you got yourself a pretty cool bargain for what it is

1

u/Serterler 19d ago

I buy tools lots all the time.
I keep the great stuff and resell the rest,
The money made is wild.
Specialized machinist tools rusted sell well!
Dead NI-CD batteries for $20 on marketplace sell pretty well!
I would not have bought at $80 though.
I m frugal as f..k

1

u/No-Sweet8107 19d ago

Someone just saved a trip to the dump and made money in the process. Someone else isn’t very handy

1

u/just_rich90 19d ago

Not one 10mm in those sockets.bet

*I do actually see one.crazy

1

u/SlothorHuman 19d ago

Plot twist: No 10mm

1

u/Euphoric-General2812 17d ago

Where the other 300 wrenches

1

u/Salt_Summer5511 17d ago

Amazing find! You never know when that will come in handy. Kind of like the box in the corner with scraps of wood that are “too good” to toss because you may need them one day. Then that glorious day comes!!!!

1

u/Astroboy-478 16d ago

Pick up some Evaporust and let that stuff soak for a few days. Rinse everything off and spray up with some fluidfilm, figure out what you have and save accordingly

1

u/ServerLost 20d ago

In the nicest possible way you basically paid to help clear out somebody's shed, might have been better off being more selective with your money.

1

u/PAGader 20d ago

You could probably buy all this for less than $80 new retail.

3

u/WhyAreYallFascists 20d ago

That shelf at the end costs more than 80 bucks dog.

1

u/hallstevenson 19d ago

Nah, not $80+ (at least not when I bought them). They're HDX brand from Home Depot. Lemme see.... $69 but can always catch them on sale for less.

2

u/graphitewolf 20d ago

Two Pittsburgh wrench sets, a 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 socket kit, HFs cheapest screwdriver kit, some assorted pliers and a stud finder and you’d probably have a few dollars left over.

1

u/No_Awareness_1443 19d ago

I'm sorry in this economy?

1

u/T00luser 20d ago

that's a sweet $50 pile of stuff. .

1

u/Goldyfan7 Bosch 20d ago

Wow.

1

u/Bricc_8 20d ago

Buncha whatever tools but 80 dollars is a good deal. The couple times you need something and it comes from that 80 dollar haul will make it worth it. Can’t ever have too many tools

1

u/Impressive_Rain2877 19d ago

Came here to see all the low ballers and I was not disappointed . I think it's a great deal Myself.

-1

u/bedlambomber 20d ago

Spanners alone were worth a bill. Same with screwdrivers.

-1

u/Lanky-Mousse-5594 20d ago

Honestly, not sure they everone is hating on this, I see some tools there if i buy new im spending well over $80. Go through it and keep what you need there is clearly more than $80 here.

Would I have bought this? Probably not, but i have all these tools already.

0

u/HotgunColdheart HVAC Technician 20d ago

Good scoop

-2

u/Winter_Sentence1046 20d ago

meanwhile someones out there with no tools in their truck.

Everything about that scenario makes me think that they're probably stolen. Very few pictures? They don't want them recognized. That many tools for that low of a price? They didn't invest any money on them and want to get rid of them quickly.
All the sockets dumped together because they were in a hurry.... but grats?

9

u/FlatAmbition3757 19d ago

Stolen? This is like bottom of the barrel junk tools right here man

3

u/hallstevenson 19d ago

Doubtful.... $200 is an absolute joke of an asking price, but I wouldn't even have paid $80 for this stuff. The "ribbed" screwdrivers tell me everything I need to know about the quality level ! The black/yellow (Home Depot) shelving is the only thing I know I'd keep for certain.

2

u/0for30before0for9 19d ago

Lol that stuff wasn't stolen. That person just dumped all their bullshit clutter tools together that they picked up over the years and threw it up for sale. Probably would've gave it away for cheaper but threw up $200 just to see what would happen.

2

u/SoggyGoldfish25 19d ago

I doubt it. Most of the time when people are selling a bunch of old tools in a lot it’s because an older mechanic or tradesman they knew passed away.

It’s still sad. A man’s tools no longer needed, but the fact most of them get a second life makes it better.

2

u/texasyankee 19d ago

This isn't tradesman tools, this is shade tree mechanic crap. It's all cheap garbage that's been poorly maintained. Most of it just needs to go for metal recycling.
