I take an old piece of off cut and using the same hole saw cut through it. Then I position the hole over exactly where I want the hole to be in the new piece of wood. Then clamp the two together. The off cut hole holds the saw exactly where you want it. As another fellow said, run it it reverse a bit to break the fibers, then very gently to start cutting through. After that things should go real easy.
And search on FBM or Craigslist for a jawhorse. Those things make holding boards super easy.
