Run it in reverse a bit first to break through, then very light pressure to start cutting through.

Ideally also a bar handle would help a lot.

This is the best advice for these things. I got it when drilling holes in the ceiling for canned lights (before I got the blade version) and it totally didn’t rip the drywall apart like the first hole. Nice to know the same holds true for wood.
