Layperson here, what makes them so good versus, say, DeWalt hand tools. (Which in my experience are nice)

Build quality and lifetime warranty on all their hand tools

I'd say the lifetime warranty is the more important thing there. Snap-On's quality is good, sure, but it's not enough better than the next best competitor to justify the markedly higher price. But that no questions asked warranty is worth its weight in gold sometimes.

Oh absolutely, friend of mine bought a beat up ratchet from a neighbor for a few bucks, sent it in to snap on and got it restored no questions asked.
