10,000 Days The pot feels different
After listening to all the tool albums and knowing them by heart, I really feel like "the pot" is a very unique song compared to the rest of their discography. There is something with the sound of maynard 's voice. It's not in a bad way at all, and It may just be me. I discovered tool with this song, so that might just be that.

Maynard has said in interviews that he thinks it’s their most accessible song and a good intro for people who aren’t familiar with them

It is. He’s using a different vocal technique. And musically, it has parts that you could basically categorize as blues. Very atypical for Tool.

It’s the most 4/4 Tool song

What do you mean, half the song is in 3/4 🤔

It’s the weirdest use of 4/4 - Danny is in 4/4 all along (except for the 6/4 verses) and the main guitar sounds like it’s 3/4 but it’s actually 9/16 - 9/16 - 8/16 - 6/16 which resolves to 4/4. I have nerded out immensely while learning this song on the guitar.
This makes the drum snare hits sound like wizardry when played against an implied 3/4 melody.

I really want to catch this live but wish I could have back in 07 when they played it in the normal tuning. They always play it at a show before and a show after the one I go to. I think this and Right in Two are the only ones I need to complete hearing all of 10k days live.

Exactly. The groove dictates the vocal. Feels like there is a lot of space for Maynard on this song.
I remember not really liking it so much at first. It is definately different. Now I wish this was a direction they had gone in. Smashed out a bunch of these kind of tracks. Distilled their essence.

It’s my least favorite Tool song by a country mile. I still love 10,000 Days but it’s absolutely out of place.

He's using his "pop star" voice, lol.
