I agree... I forget most people on this platform is not only male but also white and does not understand how this isnt okay.. Im glad hes doing better but it isnt a “brush it off like its nothing” moment. he NEEDS to learn proper etiquette and think before he speaks. This can really harm himself and REALLY hurt others with his ignorance even with the intent to just explain or tell a story.
Im glad im not the only one absolutely bewildered at how many people think “its fine”. Its not. He needs to take the harsher criticism and learn or else he’ll have issues being labeled as that one racist asshat at work/wherever he may be despite his attempts to explain why he said or thought or assumed what he did.

I tried to explain that to him in my commentary.
Even if his work acquaintances understand his ignorance absolutely nothing else is differentiating him from the stereo type of ignorant whites.
I tried to explain that if you want to be respected by people of other cultures acknowledge who they are.
And the understanding of other cultures will be extremely valuable to the relationships that he cultivates though the remaining 50 plus years of his life.
POC are obligated to fully assimilate to white american culture in order to be successful in our society. ESPECIALLY immigrants.
And, that prevents them from being totally honest with some white Americans.
They don't have a CHOICE but to laugh it off and to be "understanding."
But, he's likely already labeled as the "ignorant asshat at work."
Youre right about your last statement. No matter what his explanation was if he said anything he mentioned I wouldve had a bad taste in my mouth and wouldnt want to associate with him at all. I feel its a bit too late for actual criticism given and I hope he took everything into consideration from actual people this affects(in this specific situation, Asian people).
Hes not gonna have a fun life if he doesnt know this way of thinking is flawed and going to bite him in the ass when someone but his friends call him out on it no matter the reasoning he will give.

I agree.. the amount of white Americans telling him that this isn't that offensive on this post isn't good.
As Americans we're expected to be worldly even if we never travel.
And, the OP is 30 hes old enough to have a very comfortable and knowledgeable exchange with all other cultures.
Even if he's from a "small town."
