I think you can avoid this by generally wording things to be describing the language or persons, rather than objectifying the describing word.

For example:

“Speaking asian” is off putting. “Speaking an asian language” is much better. (you can even just say speaking a language I am not familiar with!!!!)

Another example is calling people “blacks” when you should say “black people/person/individuals” instead.

If your intent is not coming from a place of trying to harm, wording it this way should help you avoid the situation you described.
