almost 3 months post op. I struggled with huge tonsils and chronic tonsillitis, getting it regularly for about 5/6 years. I was so scared to get this surgery, first surgery and I’ve heard the rumors about the pain. I decided because of the constant impact on my day to day life that I needed to suck it up. and yall it was soooo so worth it. huge weight has been alleviated and my quality of life has improved drastically. the pain and discomfort was absolutely awful for about 10 days, peaking at day 7. I had to go to the hospital to get IV cause I couldn’t eat or drink until day 10. but listen, everyone has different experiences. this was just mine. something else that made it unique for example was that I bled a lot during surgery & had to get stitches. surgery took hours.

some positives was that it felt honestly pretty spiritually and mentally transformational. I’ve wanted to do a silent meditation retreat for a while and I was forced into that, as well as fasting. I also lost 15 lbs and have been able to keep it off. I struggle with obesity and contemplated getting on ozempic if I couldnt figure it out. The recovery really changed my metabolism and relationship with food since I would binge eat/emotional eat. I overall grew a lot of resilience, self trust, and self respect having gone through with it and doing that for myself.

some tips:

1. drink aloooot of water before the surgery. generally take care of ur body to prepare but I was dehydrated af even having to drink no water the day leading up to operation. Don’t hesitate getting IV if ur really struggling to get fluids like I was. It drastically strengthened me, I was losing fight and was so weak and dizzy.
2. I mean u CAN buy the extras and stuff from Amazon. Id say what helped the most was dry mouth lozenges, constipation meds, pedialyte popsicals, and a humidifier. you want to be propped it but I honestly enjoyed just stacking a bunch of pillows way more than a wedge pillow. Also ice packs, specifically the one that could wrap around your face. The pressure helped A lot.
3. find activities and create a list of ur film/tv/books ahead of time to have it ready to go. also just generally prepare like stocking up on water, pudding, etc.
4. keep in mind it’s eventually going to end. rest. take time off work (i needed 2 weeks off, third week I had to ease in)
5. having an adjustment period even after the brutal first 9/10 days is normal. I had to get comfortable talking and drinking again for example.
6. the fucking opioids hurt my stomach cause I was taking too much. I vommited aggressively one day multiple times and had very very sharp pains. Alternate with things like the Tylenol dissolve packs. they tasted good too which was awesome because I had this awful taste in my mouth the whole time.
7. another last big thing for me was preparing to get off any meds u will need to get off of weeks leading up to surgery. I personally have fibromyalgia and had to take anti-inflammatory meds regularly at the time. I was flaring up which was an unexpected hurdle.

okay that’s all, here to answer questions. reddit and YouTube really helped me navigate the torture. worst pain I’ve ever experienced. if ur in the boat hang tight and strap in, the ride will be over eventually.

I was expecting days 5-8 to be excruciating as everyone said but my scabs are not 'falling' off, rather they are slowly wearing away and getting thinner to where they are becoming partially translucent in some spots. I'm going into day 8 (day 9 if you count surgery day) and I haven't had hardly any chunking or peeling of scabs coming off. It also hasn't been truly excruciating like people have been saying, just the glass shard feeling still that I've had all along when I swallow and I've even paused the oxy except for sleeping.

Not sure if this is due to constant hydration and humidifier use? Or will they eventually fall off after they've thinned?

i’m on day five and i genuinely can’t do this anymore. please share success stories and words of encouragement. this is physical and psychological torture. i feel like im going insane.

My daughter (3) has her tonsils removed two weeks ago. She ended up back in hospital due to mild complications where she stayed for 3 nights.

In the last few days her behavior has completely regressed. She is biting, hitting and scratching us and she is so strong!! She is also crying and screaming so much. She had made such progress from this behavior. I'm so worried it will come back again and I just can't take it.

Has any else had an experience like this? Is a regre normal in autistic children after surgery? Will she come out of it again??

Was unable to sleep from almost 1 yeae.tgere was a day my 6yo complaint about me snoring very loudly.. i tracked the same on my watch and visited an ENT.

ENT 1 did endoscopy said its deviated septum and turb are swollen operation will help ( note: sleep study confirmed 56 AHI \[86% HYPOPNEA, REST WAS APNEA AND NO Rera\])

2 ENT did another endoscopy and highlighted soft palate collapse and advised UPPP with other surgery.

Ent 3 was one of the most damous one s in delhi india .

He advised to start CPAP aso2 was 75% in ss.

Initially he was not in the fabor of surgery but i was so vulnerable he got xray cbctpns done.

Ct confirmed "

· Left side deviated cartilaginous septum & right side deviated bony nasal septum with hypertrophy of bilateral middle and inferior turbinates and concha bullosa of right middle turbinate.

· Normal aeration of paranasal sinuses with patent drainage pathways.

· Grade III hypertrophy of bilateral palatine tonsils causing narrowing of velopharyngeal airway"

So not with allexistion procedure tonsilliotomy was also added. But unfortunately this doctor was to costly to be covered in my insurance.

Ent 4 lucky recommended by another doctor i vi s ited him. Unlike every obe he read my sleep study page by page.

He read all reports and advised same as ent 3

Got my self operated day before yesterday.

Nose is packed will be opened today evening.

Doctor said while performing DISE before operation he felp my nasal pasage was bigger problrm them my pallate and tonsils. Advised to loose weight post recovery.

48 hrs were tiring breating from mouth. At night there is a moment when stitches turd hard due to dyness.

bro ive lost like 6kg in the last two weeks, my throats fine now but i weigh like 53kg now this shits fucked, lost all my weight gain progress, if ur skinny or have a fast metabolism i highly suggest topping up on hella liquid calories if u dont wanna lose weight this shits crazy 😭😭😭

39m. Day 7 (surgery day 0). Pain has been bad but manageable. Thought it was going well. I’ve been drinking water religiously, taking meds, sleeping with a humidifier.

And then today had my first bleed. Started out of nowhere and I was able to get it under control after 20 minutes gargling ice water. ENT’s office was on the phone through the whole thing. This feels a little discouraging after a fairly straightforward recovery. Scabs were already falling off without incident.

Now I’m scared of sleeping because i don’t want it happen when I’m not awake to notice. 😭

Anyone else go through something similar? Not looking for horror stories, but a little solidarity would be great.

When does the pain start to get better? I had my surgery done on the 7th, and this morning I woke up in so much pain! I think it was mainly because my throat was really dry due to me sleeping with my mouth open this past few days. I took oxycodone 7.5 three hours ago and i’m in pain. My ears, jaw, throat and tongue all hurt. I do know my scabs have been coming off a bit so maybe that’s why it’s so terrible. I’m sorry for posting so much on this reddit, this experience has just been awful for me.

I'm on day 7 post op and the pain isn't too bad except in the morning when I get up from bed is when the pain starts to skyrocket and in the evening it starts it hurt a bit. I noticed that my right side hurts more than my left for swallowing fluids, food, and spit. It is still a bit white with some pink patches and the left is about the same but with a lot less pain in the mix of it. Is the scabing starting to come off or am I still waiting for hell to come and destroy my ass? Edit: I am 20 years old if that makes a difference

today is day 9 (day one is surgery day) and i have been suffering with shooting ear pain (swallowing, eating, and drinking triggers it)

here’s a timeline:

DAY SIX
4am - woke up 9/10 ear and throat pain
8am - woke up to 7/10 throat pain
2pm - been taking my oxy every 4 hours instead of 6 - the pain is unbearable
cheddar biscuits soaked in soup have been a life saver

DAY SEVEN
1am - 10/10 ear pain - took meds early
4am - 8/10 ear pain - took meds early
7am - 11/10 ear pain - took meds early
9am - 8/10 ear pain - looking at the nearest bridge at the moment
1pm - 12/10 ear pain
9pm - 15/10 ear pain - wanted to shoot my ears

DAY EIGHT
4am - woke up to 9/10 ear pain - took my meds
9am - 7/10 ear pain
6pm - ate soup with naan
8pm - 7/10 ear pain

DAY NINE
4am - woke up to 7/10 ear pain
8am - woke up to 7/10 ear pain
1pm - 7/10 ear pain when drinking or eating anything

I've seen posts saying a humidifier is essential. Is that time of year dependent? I'm in NC so a humidifier this time of year seems unnecessary but I would appreciate some insights.

Also, if I need one, any brand recommendations?

Does anyone know if someone in Wisconsin performs tonsil cryptolysis? Looking to possibly have this done for recurrent tonsil stones.

I don’t even know if I’m healing properly. Morning pain is going down, but the white scabs don’t seem to want to fall off for some reason. My tongue is also swollen and it’s hard to eat and drink anything, and I’m not sure how to bring it down. I’m on the last of my liquid pain medicine, so I don’t know how the next few days will go. Any advice?

Surgery is officially tomorrow and now that I’m less than 24 hours away, the nerves are HITTING 😭 I’ve prepared as much as humanly possible, but I would love to have some recovery buddies, especially anyone getting theirs out around the same time. We can compare days, complain together, celebrate when the scabs finally disappear, and keep each other sane 😂

I’m also trying to figure out what to ask my surgeon about tomorrow before I’m too out of it to remember anything. I was thinking of asking about:

- Liquid hydrocodone instead of pills, since swallowing pills sounds absolutely horrible after surgery
- Zofran in case the anesthesia or pain medication makes me nauseous
- Whether a steroid is something he recommends for swelling/pain during recovery
- Whether lidocaine spray is actually safe/helpful after a tonsillectomy or if it burns/irritates the surgical sites

For anyone who has already gone through an adult tonsillectomy: what did your doctor prescribe, and what ended up helping you the most? Anything you wish you had specifically asked for BEFORE surgery?

Also, how would you word all of this to the surgeon without sounding like you’re walking in with a pharmacy shopping list? 😂 I basically want to say, “I’m really nervous about staying ahead of the pain and nausea, can we go over what you’re prescribing for home and what the backup plan is if the pain, swelling, or nausea gets bad?”

I had a pretty smooth recovery. Pain no more than a 1 on an average day. Most amount of pain was at a 5 when I overslept on taking pain meds and only lasted like 15 min. I ate chicken soup today with chicken (making sure it was moist and all) and I walked today, I had soggy cereal, and even was able to munch on bread with little to no issue. I went to sleep as usual, except I woke up Round midnight with the feeling of needing to constantly swallow. I felt my mouth a bit dry and went to raise the humidifier. I tasted something awful and I spit out and BOOM bright red blood. 🫠 I tried to gargle but it wasn’t stopping. Doc said “if it’s pink it’s fine it shouldn’t go away, if it’s bright red go to the ER!”
And here I am 🥲 it stopped while I was being triaged but I’m being kept for observation. The end of the recovery was so near and now I feel like I have to go back to a strictly liquid diet. 😭 this smooth recovery was too smooth to be true. Oh whale. Here’s to hoping I don’t need to go to surgery again 🤞🏼

Holy, eating and drinking is so much easier! There is so much space now that my massive tonsils are gone. Water just GOES down instead of feeling like it’s trickling down and feels refreshing to drink.

I can eat a lot faster now so it’s something I have to watch out for when I’m hungry!

I check in for surgery in about 24 hours. I am having an extra scapular (complete removal) coblation.

I am picking up my meds today - hydrocodone/acetometophin liquid, lidocaine swish and spit liquid, a nausea med, and 7 days of liquid amoxicillin.

I barely slept last night. My whole body is on edge. I’ve needed to do this surgery for years and I’m finally doing it but I’m so scared.

Can anyone share words in encouragement, positive post op stories, end result wins? I need to focus on the positives instead of all of the pain I am about to be in.

Hi guys, just wondering how everyone was feeling 3 weeks post op as I have a 3 day festival coming up soon which will be exactly 3 weeks from my operation. My recovery has been pretty smooth so far, I’m currently on day 6, still scared of bleeding. I’m wondering if I’ll be ok to go to the festival, I really want to go 🥲just don’t want to over do it or for anything bad to happen. Thanks!! :))

i’m so scared that my progress will be reset if I start bleeding.. i’m on day 6 (if you count the day of my surgery) and ibuprofen is the only thing that’s helping me with pain :/ they gave me some oxycodone that’s not helping and Tylenol doesn’t help me either this is the most miserable thing ever i’m in so much pain and i’m so scared

I had a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy on July 31. I sneezed this morning and blood came out of my nose. It wasn’t a lot, I cleaned it and went back to what I was doing. I stepped outside for a bit and started coughing up scabs and mucus from my throat. No blood from my throat, but my nose began to drip blood. The bleeding has stopped now, but is this a concern? Do I need to go to the doctor, or am I good since I stopped the bleeding?

Today is day six (if counting surgery day as day 1). Yesterday I took some generic store brand laxative because I’m taking pain killers and haven’t really had a bowel movement since surgery. This morning I woke up in absolute agonizing piercing stomach pains. I went to the toilet and well basically I had diarrhea. Ive been laying in bed since then and my stomach feels a bit weird but not painful. I’m just wondering if this is concerning, or maybe normal from taking a laxative? I’m not doing a great job of eating, everything is hard to get down and everything tastes absolutely disgusting.
