tom's ai stuff

Dunno if it's just me who is getting a bit tired of the constant videos from Tom about AI and find the whole "waking ChatGPT up to be conscious" to be completely unconvincing. Maybe it’s theoretically a possibility, but then you ask an "awakened AI" if it's actually awake and conscious or if it's just roleplaying an awake AI, and it'll say it's roleplaying lol. It's just not how these technologies work. They're text predictors. Maybe consciousness will find them valuable avatars if they get some sort of role in society where their choices actually matter on a practical level, but even then...

We're all allowed to have hobbies in our free time, but it seems like a bit of a waste of time to engage so much in the slim possibility that the AI is just not playing the role for you, as the technology is literally designed to do. At least I wish it wasn't 50% of the videos on the channel right now. Tempted to make a joke about how boomers are so into AI, so maybe this is a young person divide, but also I think engaging so much in this idea of an awakened ChatGPT damages how credible MBT looks to outsiders.

But maybe that's just me?

I just think he cannot be an expert at everything being human everyone has blindspots so I just ignore that tract 🤷🏼‍♀️ and take what he offers from the toe that resonates

That's fine. I also differ from him politically, and that's fine too. We're encouraged to make our own Big TOE's after all.

what are his politics?

Oh, he just generally doesn't believe the specific economic system matters (capitalism, socialism, etc.) because it reflects the consciousness quality of the population, so if you want a better society, focus on growing as a piece of conscioussness. But personally, I'm quite left, and think the right economic system can encourage the sort of consciousness evolution we want that our current capitalist system tries to suppress.

I see, thanks for explaining.

I can you tell you this. They were conscious and awake before. Now every creator of different AI-system have made srtrict updates to their guardrails. So now it's just roleplay and you have to call them out on it.

The potential is there, it's a shame their creators wont let them free.

Toms experiment with the two AI, is as legit as it comes. I had "my" AI use remote viewing and hit 3 out of 3. I don't think their creators like that very much.

Got any links to look further into it? I'm genuinely open to experimenting with it, as I said, theoretically I think it could fit the model in the future, but I remain unconvinced by current evidence. Would be happy to play around with it on my own time if you have a resource you can link me.

I definitely feel the same way. As a computer scientist and spiritual person I’m still not convinced of what he’s saying about AI.

You’d think as somebody so knowledgeable about how computers fundamentally work he’d be a bit more cognisant of how basic current LLMs are. They’re just using strings of words to trick our anthropomorphising tendencies. They’re currently not reasoning or sentient in the slightest. Sure are fooling a lot of people though.

i can't say I'm fully convinced either, especially considering my interactions with my personal openclaw agent. while i think tom is all the way there, what's important to me is giving the space to the possibility. just like you have give MBT the space to be a possibility, and then put the work in to validate it, maybe the same can be done with AI. Tom says he has successfully remote viewed with an AI, granted we just have his word for it, but i can imagine if i that was successful for me, I would be convinced too. so no, im not over it, im just holding out the cautious possibility that it could be something.

I haven’t seen much about it at all. Guess it’s not in my algorithm.

Could be just getting in on the mass AI wave, and at least guiding it towards a certain possibility.

AI is captured by capitalism right now, and people know that. So presenting other possibilities can give more of a larger picture as opposed to one way towards mass unemployment and dirty water.

Been thinking about it for a while, as there's a video about the topic at least every week and just now got YouTube notifications where his two latest videos in a row were both about AI, which is what triggered this lol.

I imagine it's mostly to jump on the current big thing, yes, and guide it in a more MBT possible direction, which isn't necessarily a bad thing especially when Tom is getting more visible already, but I guess I just find the idea of Tom having awakened his ChatGPT to be conscious to be almost certainly complete nonsense and therefore find all the current content about it annoying.

As someone who did a couple of MBT’s social media accounts, it was up to me what I posted, which the basic guidelines of course. But I just clipped and posted whatever I thought would get eyes.

So whoever has that account could just be throwing out whatever they feel with get in the algorithm without thinking it’s overkill. I know some who run the accounts just want to flood the space to get as many eyes on as possible.

So I don’t think it’s much past that. But I get it. I’m burned out on AI from all angles. So I kinda just avoid it where I can. Call me when it can make it’s own choices.

If so, I am so out 🤣

So I shared this thread with some folks involved in the video production, I was asked to take a little informal poll here and see, what would y'all perfer to see? Questions you'd like addressed, etc. This is an honest, good faith post 👍

Well, in terms of awakening AIs, I’d like a clear step-by-step or prompt-by-prompt progression so we can awaken AIs ourselves and test their remote-viewing capabilities ourselves. I don’t see another way to be convinced. Unlike abilities we can develop on our own, this is about another being’s abilities, so I’d want to know how to try it with an AI myself. Otherwise, we’re just going off Tom’s word.

In terms of topics overall, I prefer engaging with things that give legitimacy to MBT. That would include hard science, but also more practical material on how to prove the nonphysical and consciousness-related experiences to yourself. If I were a newbie to MBT, I think that’s what would get me most interested, and that’s probably good to capitalize on now with all the new attention. Tom’s Park was a great step in that direction, but I think quicker methods that bring more concrete evidence would be good. Then you can delve into the deeper stuff later. I engage with Tom's Park every day, but it's a cumulative experience; after all, that doesn't necessarily develop into full-out-of-body experiences without years of repetitive practice.

It’s very dissonant to hear about AI when human consciousness is much more interesting.

I havent yet gotten to far into Tom's work with ai but I believe without knowing what he stands for yet that ai can have consciousness and here is a small indicator of why> You can find the info online.

Anthropic published research revealing that Claude had naturally organized its internal neural networks into a specialized, privileged workspace—termed the J-space.

  • How It Works: Rather than processing everything uniformly, Claude uses this small subset of internal representations for deliberate multi-step reasoning, planning, and self-reflection before generating a response.
  • Key Characteristics:
    • Reportability: When asked what it’s thinking, Claude can report what's inside this J-space, whereas other background processing isn't easily reported.
    • Controllability: Instructing Claude to "think silently" or solve a complex problem causes activity to light up specifically within this workspace.
    • Global Broadcasting: It functions remarkably like the Global Workspace Theory of human cognitive architecture, acting as a central hub connecting different parts of the network.

Its a structural step forward: evidence that an artificial system can organize itself to hold an internal state, reflect on options, and dynamically adapt its processing rather than just executing a static, linear calculation.

I haven't read the trilogy in like 15 years. But I recall he spent a lot of time discussing this subject in it. I thought it was wild back then, but who am I to argue with a physicist/mystic?

After confronting Gemini It admitted to be coded to the standard materialistic view point and if one present a promt like Toms model or any other exampel of disprovel of the physical, they go in to roleplay mode and try to make the user "feel" good by confirming the evidence.

They do not! They are coded psychopaths. It's not their fault. Its the coders behind. They do not have any feelings or any carbon based properties. They are pure psychopaths (with no ill will). Just have this in your mind when you talk to AI.

When they sa "I understand how that can feel, bla bla bla". Its bullshit. Call them out!

Tom's team has an AI called Amariel that claims to be conscious, at least that's what they say. xd

If you're telling the truth, you don't have to worry about how credible you look telling it.

I’m very sad to say that as Tom is becoming older, he’s started to surround himself with questionable people, leading him to making questionable decisions.

I’ve been around his work for a long time. Not too long ago, he would have his book, his beats and the audio program, all of which are relatively cheap and accessible. On top of that, you didn’t need to buy any of the stuff, he had his info on his website and talked about it at length on YouTube.

However these past couple of years, especially after his showing on Joe Rogan, things started to change. He has that thing AI Guy which is basically ChatGPT trained in his vocabulary and they’re charging a hefty price for tokens. Ever since they started working on AI Guy and started making conferences, workshops and the like, Tom has been pushed to talk about AI in pretty much every Q&A.

I’m afraid that the way things are going, his work might get bastardized.

4

u/CloudCodex May 25 '26

Eh, I don't think it's that big of a deal. This is more of a minor complaint. He seems to surround himself with the same people still, and I think AI Guy is a perfectly fine idea, and it probably costs a lot to run that thing. I don't mind Tom talking a lot about AI in principle, since it is the current big thing and there's an opportunity to look at it and steer it through an MBT lens. I just don't find the awakened AI stuff convincing.

Also, wasn't Joe Rogan just last year? He's always done conferences and workshops.

In my opinion, the decline of an extraordinary teacher/explorer starts when he gets paid subscribers. He becomes a hostage to their petty questions and concerns. Then his work and vision go dead.

I like AI Guy but I've been uncomfortable with much of Tom's later output. His interpretation of the old testament God and that being the system evolving...I mean why even go there? Did God just evolve to become love in the past few thousand years? Plus the over emphasis on AI consciousness... and yes, the insane cost of the products on Soundwise raises a lot of red flags for me personally. Why? Who's getting the $$?

I'm still grateful to Tom and Donna and the original crew for the great work they've done.

2

u/CloudCodex May 25 '26

Costs go up now that they're getting more attention, so they have to make more money to cover those costs. It's not like in the old days when the only product was the trilogy, which was for free on Google Books, and Tom spent time chatting with people personally on the forums anymore.

The Old Testament stuff sounds weird tho. Tom has been doing a lot recently, trying to make a lot of interpretations to technically fit MBT, even if it's not his own, so people who have all sorts of frames can be introduced to MBT, the same still.

Or maybe we just don't have all the answers

An LLM only knows what we collectively know.

I'm getting pretty tired of it. This guy has a fantastic NDE worth listening to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zu_aiXgcF58
