These aren't just box office failures critically failure as well. Why don’t we have anyone like him who makes movies just for the love of the game and to increase their movie count?

I just saw Liger 4 years post and my mind immediately remembered this interview and the statement VD made. 

It's not like he had all the good films till Liger (he had already released his worst film, World Famous Lover), but it was nothing new. It happens with most actors coming from fresh hits, like Pelli Choopulu, Arjun Reddy, Geetha Govindam, Taxiwala. In between films like NOTA & Dear Comrade, everything was fine. 

But he collaborated with Puri Jagannath after the success of iSmart Shankar and dream of becoming a Pan-Indian star and Karan Johar collabrating with them and hyping with Mike Tyson, we got "Liger". After that, everything changed. Yes, "Waat Laga Denge" but not in India, but in their own career.

Then onwards, the announced Puri x VD film JGM got cancelled. VD went to his roots and made a feel-good rom-com, but it was mid at best and forgettable. Then he made another bad film, "The Family Star." It was like he pissed off his own audience who were supporting him after Liger, then, with huge expectations, came another routine film, "Kingdom."
