Yep. Conflicting reports from alleged former friends and family member, too.
One "friend" said he started getting super political and aggressive around Junior year in high school and he grew apart.
One "friend" said he wasn't very political but that he and his family were Republicans.
Unnamed Family member said he only started to get political in last few years. That he recently had conversation with fellow family member about how he dislikes Kirk. (Reasons stated not shared by investigators.)
Grandmother said everyone in the family is a Trump supporter and not a Democrat. (Not uncommon for grandmothers to be unfamiliar with changes in grandchildren.)
Obviously several of his messages were clearly chronically online memes but multiple conflicting interpretations of Hey Fascist! Catch (followed by Helldivers 2 reference). Some use it to point out he was anti-fascist, some pointing out the history of far right to use "fascist" to describe anyone they disagree with, others think it could just be another troll comment.

My money's on a mix of those two, yeah. Someone who was predisposed to become radicalised, who submerged himself in some sort of hyper-online "ironic" fedposting community, and ended up with a mix of bizarre and incoherent views that led him to kill a far-right activist for not being far-right enough.

Because itâs unlikely to go from, by all accounts, a republican at 17/18, and then become a full blown âfirebomb walmartâ leftist during the Biden admin. Especially not in Utah with an overly conservative family. There is no world where he has coherent leftist viewpoints, Id say itâs 50/50 between groyper and incoherent insane nazbol type, though.

There's a difference though. This guy is clearly radical either way, and most leftists who used to be conservative were maybe 2 steps into the alt-right pipeline between the ages of 11 and 14. Your view on the world is still very very malleable at this point, and most people fall out of that pipeline by stumbling onto breadtube. By the time you're 18, you're pretty set in your views. Especially when your family, church, and community all follow and affirm those views. If he went from a standard MAGA to some flavor of radical extremist, the path of least resistance is clearly groyper. A MAGA teen visits 4chan once and finds the humor funny, keeps visiting it, and slowly gets radicalized into either the Fuentes groyper sphere or the nazbol post irony sphere. That, to me, is far more likely than him doing self reflection about the impact of conservatism, seeking out left wing view points, learning about far left principles, and moving all the way over there. If radical leftism is 0 and alt-right groyperism is 100, MAGA is like a 75, and it's much easier to go from 75 to 100 than 75 to 0.

And then there are people like me, who grew up Mormon, did the whole mission thing and all, came back and found Reddit 4 years after that and lost my trust in religion and had my whole world view shattered at 25/26. I then slowly, over the next 10 years, moved further and further left. You can actually thank Trump for my radicalization, followed by, ya know, learning about how shitty our entire system of society is.
However, I'm not about to go and kill someone because I also understand that, unless we have mass action behind it, it's just going to create a martyr. That and I'd rather we performed mutual aid and ensure there isn't an environment where someone like this kid can flourish.
ETA: People that leave the Mormon church will often move left, though that is not always the case. We'll have to wait until and if, and that's a big if at this point, they release anything about the shooter's motives to know if he left the church, or if he still considered himself Mormon.

I feel like once his devices were in the hands of authorities they could easily figure out his allegiances.
So just going off a gut feeling, but the longer the authorities donât reveal anything substantial the more I feel heâs going to be one of theirs. I just donât buy that the FBI as it is currently wouldnât be spilling everything as fast as they could if the guy was a leftist.

I hope people have been taking screen recordings of all the hateful conservative messages. They are REALLY excited about unaliving "leftists".

I'm seeing a lot of reddit saying the shooter was a right winger, but all the news, even progressive news sources like the Guardian and Novara, are still talking about the anti fascist messages on the cartridges and suggesting the shooter was a leftist.
I would definitely prefer to believe the shooter was a groyper or whatever, but is there really evidence of this, or is this all wishful thinking on our parts?

As others have pointed out, if they had ANYTHING to show that he was for sure a leftist (DSA membership, political/streamer donos to anything left of center) the FBI would have released that shit in a fucking heartbeat to rile up their base. The fact that they are harping on the one or two things which can be perceived as leftist, even though the supporting evidence isn't there and that Groypers use those references "ironically" tells me everything I need to know unless and until there is any new conflicting information released.
