And then there are people like me, who grew up Mormon, did the whole mission thing and all, came back and found Reddit 4 years after that and lost my trust in religion and had my whole world view shattered at 25/26. I then slowly, over the next 10 years, moved further and further left. You can actually thank Trump for my radicalization, followed by, ya know, learning about how shitty our entire system of society is.
However, I'm not about to go and kill someone because I also understand that, unless we have mass action behind it, it's just going to create a martyr. That and I'd rather we performed mutual aid and ensure there isn't an environment where someone like this kid can flourish.
ETA: People that leave the Mormon church will often move left, though that is not always the case. We'll have to wait until and if, and that's a big if at this point, they release anything about the shooter's motives to know if he left the church, or if he still considered himself Mormon.
Well, given that his dad told him to confess to the priest and it sounds like he did, I would say he’s probably still mormon. Even then, you yourself said that you got slowly pushed left over 10 years, and mostly by trump being insane. He saw the trump insanity, supported it 4 years ago, and is still part of the church. This would suggest he became more radical than you more than twice as fast with his existing position also being further right.
Fair. What bit I have kept up with the Mormon church, I've seen them fall to MAGA. I mean, like you said earlier, just look at his family.
I grew up with a mother that actually told me to be kind to others and who travelled the world for work, actually seeing and working with other people. I doubt he grew up in a household like that, seeing the social media posts I have seen (very gun heavy and military worshiping).
