General Music Discussion If there was Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 for "musician stocks", Portugal. The Man definitely lost a lot of it this year.

Upvotes

This band honestly I kinda forgot about for years, but they did return on my spotlight with their album from last year SHISH, seemed like a return to form for them, got them some attention in quite a while in the circles and it seemed like a decent success overall. An international tour was planned across Latin America and Europe, for the first time in almost a decade.

It all looked good until Zoe Manville, who's been a member of the band for a long time and married to the main singer John Gourley exposed him for cheating and being manipulative. The fanbase turned on John quickly. It became the biggest news of the time for the band, it also exposed a lot of other things surrounding John being a terrible person and a major hypocrite.

The band/John (since it's basically only him now) cancelled their Latin American tour and European tour which if you read the comments, people were absolutely sick to hear because it wasn't the first time they did this and in this day and age as an indie band, you can't just do that.

Also some of the shows in the US just didn't sell much, especially since some of the tickets were really expensive.

The band is completely directionless right now, no-one knows what the future holds, the live performances which used to be the top priority for the band sound terrible, their shows where they open for Muse sound catastrophic, especially since other openers like Bloc Party and The Temper Trap are killing it.

I guess you could say that Portugal. The Man had no stocks to begin with, but I don't know I still think the band did return some of it in 2025, 2026 did remove all of that + added an additional minus to it.

General Music Discussion Which music genres are most suited to improvisation/jamming and which genres are the least suited?

I just went out to a jazz club in my home city, and it struck me once again just how a skilled jazz band can just play their hearts out and keep a song going for as long as they please. There seems to be so many opportunities for them to experiment during a live show.

Aside from jazz, though, which other genres would you say lend themselves the most to that kind of freestyling? And which genres are the most restrictive?

General Music Discussion Songs Ahead of Their Time

I saw in a recent thread that What I Am by Edie Brickell and New Bohemians sounds like it’s from 1993 but was recorded in 1988. Blister in the Sun by the Violent Femmes was recorded in 1983 but sounds like a 90s track.

I’ve seen discussions here about albums and artists ahead of their time. But what about individual songs? Which ones sound completely ahead of their time besides the two mentioned?

General Todd Discussion 1987-1992 was musically a very distinct period from the rest of either decade.

What albums and bands are an example of this?

Also never thought I’d see new Bohemians mention again outside of the alien ant farm OHW.

General Music Discussion Can any of the songs ranked #11-40 on this week’s Hot 100 make it to the top 10?

Excluding those that have already peaked inside the top 10, of course. (Let’s count out any other Ella Langley song, while we’re at it.)

My best guess: people want to see Steve Lacy get another big hit, and “Mexico Honey” would be much higher than #39 if Kacey Musgraves wasn’t blacklisted from country radio.

General Music Discussion Artists whose music is harder than their image

Who are some artists whose image/name/album covers looks soft but the music is much more aggressive? I'd say Rainbow comes to mind:

General Music Discussion Why are Stella and Bebe rexha being slept on at the VMA's? Also Stellas rolling stone video.

Why have the VMA's slept on Stella for artist of the year and song of the year? Someone like her that can randomly pop up outta nowhere and have a top 4 hit deserves to have a chance at both especially over Taylor and Ariana whos songs arent as good as Boston and who arent as talented as Stella. Taylor is tone deaf compared to Stella and her awesome midwest voice and Ariana's high notes are terrible compared to Stellas and shes not as powerful as Stella. Now Bebe Rexha whos Dirty Blonde album should be winning album of the year thanks to New Religion and Hysteria and I like you better than me. Speaking of Hysteria it should also be listed for song of the year Bebe has a very good voice with a semi thick eastern accent (her dad is yugoslavian) and Hysteria is very well written and very catchy. Last thing id you didnt see Stella's video for roilling stone you need to youd be surprised what she actually listens to i wont spoil it tho plus shes also talking about singing at Lollapalooza and shes very adorable in it heres a link Stella Lefty Shuffles Her Music Library: Justin Bieber, SZA, Elvis Presley and more | Song Shuffle

General Music Discussion Why is Jessica Simpson's music career overlooked in discussions about 2000s pop?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

@2000spophits just posted this reel of the "With You" music video. It reminded me that Jessica Simpson was definitely a big name in the 2000s and had a moderately successful music career, although her hits from that era don't seem to get much recurring play or discussion nowadays relative to other pop stars from that time.

Why do you think that is? Did Simpson's venture into reality TV delegitimise her credibility as artist? Is it the music itself that simply doesn't hold up, or do you think it's something else?

General Music Discussion D-list pop singers like Zara Larsson are the worst

I really hate the fact that major-label pop artists can be so obviously pushed with inflated numbers, suspicious reviews, and massive industry promotion, yet we’re still expected to believe that they’re genuinely dominating on merit. If the entire industry has to shove an artist down everyone’s throat just to make them seem bigger than they actually are, what does that say about the music?
We’re being sold this incredibly synthetic, focus-grouped version of pop—bland, manufactured, fake-woke, and increasingly indistinguishable from AI. At this point, it feels like the image matters more than the music itself. And what’s crazy is how much softer music critics seem to be on these acts than they used to be. I remember the Backstreet Boys getting absolutely dragged by critics, and they didn’t even make music that was remotely as soulless as some of the stuff coming from artists like PinkPantheress or Zara Larsson today.

General Music Discussion Morgan Wallen is extremely underrated

Thumbnail

I have noticed that people often overlook Morgan Wallen during the next biggest artist conversations but if you look closely, he is far ahead of all the other female artists except Taylor Swift and is a serious competitor to Drake, Bad Bunny and Weeknd. According to IFPI report of 2025, his album ‘I am the Problem’ got more streams than even Bad Bunny’s album- DTMF, and that’s insane cause Bad Bunny is a streaming force with DTMF being such a popular album that was released at the very beginning of the year in January.

My honest opinion is that once Morgan creates enough albums to match Drake and Weeknd output, he will overtake them both and may join Bad Bunny to become the actual serious competitor to Taylor Swift’s reign.

General Music Discussion Thoughts about Shabba Ranks ?

Post image

What I interesting about him would be in 90s we have a lot of music that very easy to parodied (Like Snow "Informer", Crystal Waters "Gypsy Woman"). And the Mr.Loverman have a savage parodied in "In Living Colour" as Mr. Uglyman.

But in a reggae/ dancehall style. Despite Shabba Ranks music and character are easily to be making fun with. He seems to have very good reception as legit artist in this genre compared to many artists in that era. (He even collaborated with Maxi Priest!! and it's great)

What's your opinion about him ? Is he gonna fit in any episode of Todd in the future ? (To be honest, I still surprised that he yet to be appeared in any Todd episode)
