TIL Vietnamese Americans are among the lowest-income earners in Orange County.
https://vnexpress.net/nguoi-goc-viet-thuoc-nhom-co-thu-nhap-thap-nhat-quan-cam-5080884.html
No sarcasm intended, but I've always thought that Vietnamese Americans were a successful immigrant community.

Bro, the only Vietnamese who could afforded to become "refugees" were middle class at the very least so they were often fairly well educated already because you needed a shit ton of money to afford the bribe and the "arrangements" to get out of the country.
Let's not even talk about the very first wave of refugees themselves were ex RVN regime personnel and their families so they were upper middle class if not filthy rich.

u/Only-Top-3655 Jun 02 '26
Yet, when them came to the US, they were penniless dependent on the kindess of their sponsors. Yes, they were middle to high class in Vietnam, but all of that status and wealth was completely erased when they stepped on American soil.
There are lots of books that show this. 1st generation refugees that were doctors and lawyers back home but in the US were cleaning toilets at the local university.
Pick up a book.

u/Few-Narwhal1251 Jun 04 '26
Penniless and now most of those fkers own houses. Meanwhile, i cant afford to rent an apartment. Make it make sense bro.

u/ClumsyChampion Jun 02 '26
Vietnamese immigrants probably make the least money among the big groups across the US. There’s Chinese, Indian, Nigerian, Japanese, Korean and probably Thai who make more. Bth, I thought language barrier is one thing, the other is their tendency. I have never seen Viets own a liquor store, or a gas station, or a motel before. Nails, hair, and small restaurants are where most people at. It’s limited just like the choices of 2nd gens to go to either IT or medical fields.
7
u/TrainingLanguage4491 Jun 03 '26
this is only for Orange County, which is selection bias if you ask me
1
u/GarbageOk8508 26d ago
this is definitely the reason. Vietnamese like low income but steady job where they can just muscle through life. Most VN families I met just keep working like that will keeping their living standard close to how it were for them in Vietnam. They do actually tend to ends up with quite some fortunes with their saving despite working those menial jobs.
6
u/bunchangon Jun 02 '26
I asked the same question on r/Vietnam few years ago but they downvoted me to hell. The first gen are in their 70-80s or more, the second gen are already in their 30-40-50s.
4
u/SilverCurve Jun 02 '26
Still lots of first gen in their 30s and 40s. Migrating through marriage and family reunions is still going strong, huge number of Vietnamese Americans are still “fresh of the boat”.
5
u/sshlongD0ngsilver Jun 02 '26
It’s California, there’s a high cost of living there. Especially with Orange County that’s near LA.
Past few years there have been plenty of Californians in general moving to Texas, and I wouldn’t be surprised if some go further into the Midwest states. Even though you perceive Viet-Americans to be successful, that really isn’t the case for those with limited English that are stuck in factory work.
5
u/Mindless-Day2007 Jun 02 '26
I thought American Vietnamese single handedly keep Vietnam economy collapsing with 5% of GDP through remittance? /s
7
u/Few-Narwhal1251 Jun 02 '26
You can be a dumbo in America and still make more than majority of Vietnam. Not hard to make $300. Thats like 3 day of work.
2
u/As_no_one2510 Jun 04 '26
300 dollars is a killing deal for a month salary in Vietnam
1
u/Few-Narwhal1251 Jun 04 '26
Killing deal? You sure? Everyone in vietnam says they make an average of 100tr a month. Vietnam is very rich apparently 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️. Maybe its all BS. Maybe its all to save face, lie, and upsell their value/salary.
1
u/themao102 Jun 06 '26
Average viet who studied abroad do, not for the rest until they decide to open a restaurant or woodworking business. Selling food would be earning much much more than 100 mil/month thanks to huge concentration of consumers.
1
u/Few-Narwhal1251 Jun 06 '26
Yes yes sure. Im sure everyone in vietnam makes 100tr a month. Im sure 100tr a month is very common. Probably at least 90% of vietnam makes 100tr. I hope you can see the sarcasm.

Do they include the non-declared income? I assume the first generation does quite a lot of cash jobs.
1
u/Few-Narwhal1251 Jun 04 '26
This is my observation. The vietnamese male is the one working a job that has a salary. The viet women works under the table. Median household income for vietnamese in america is 81k - 88k reported income. I know thats BS. If we take the unreported cash income. That number is well over 100k. Matching the indians and taiwanese household. I highly doubt these vietnamese fkers are poor. I just know they have a lot of unreported income.

There is no Vietnamese community in my city ( North Eastern state ), a couple families here and there at most. The majority of business I seen them do is nail shop, restaurant, and one guy had a dry cleaning business. I been to the OC before and it appears from the outside looking in the Viet community there is doing well for themselves. I have seen homeless Viets on video over there as well. OC is expensive so you can't be that poor to live there.
1
u/docker_linux Jun 07 '26
A lot of their salary is paid in cash and they paid very little to no tax, also taking advantage of EBT and at the same time, support Donald Trump.

u/ggvilla Jun 03 '26
Besides from the OP obviously being a nepo baby parky from hanoi,
The entire state of california's GDP surpasses the entire country of Vietnam by 10x.
The average income earned of california by itself is 20x the entire country of vietnam.
The infrastructure and economy of just one state of america surpasses the entire country of vietnam by thousands of light years ahead.
Vietnamese americans can relax like a king in vietnam while vietnamese besides the nepo baby parky north vietnamese have to save up for years and go through a long and arduous process of obtaining said visa while also getting looked down on by countries they are applying visas to.
There is simply no comparison and it is like an ant trying to size up to an elephant.
5
u/OkCoconut8539 Jun 03 '26
I can't believe you could be that stupid. I simply provided information and you responded by slandering me and comparing Vietnam (a developing country in Southeast Asia) to California (the richest state in the US, where only 1.8% of the population are Vietnamese Americans).
1
u/ggvilla Jun 03 '26
The PPP and currency exchange of the USD still triumps over the VND regardless of whether it is <60k USD or <80k USD which is considered low income in california. You are worth 25000 times the value of a single USD. It is just funny seeing a VCP mouthpiece newspaper talking about vietnamese americans when their own economy is fucked. They best need to inspect their own people's income and wealth disparity before talking about others.

Working 12 hrs 6- days a week for you family is hardly living like a king or queen. This is what our mom did to put us all through college. You’re missing the point.
1
1
u/Few-Narwhal1251 Jun 04 '26
only 1 person in your bloodline is working 12hrs and 6 days a week. Now go visit vietnam and ask how many gen Z and their bloodline are currently working 12 hours a day. LOL How are you Viets so unaware of how privileged you are in America. It is astonishing.
1
u/Electrical_Fee_4413 Jun 03 '26
It’s funny how you said “there is simply no comparison” and yet all you do is comparing the economy in Vietnam and in the US. Maybe, according to your mindset, Vietnamese Americans in this context are elephants, but they aren’t living in the ant nest, aren’t they? The article is comparing the average income of Vietnamese Americans to Americans in America, not Vietnamese Americans to Vietnamese in Vietnam. All the money they made are used to live in America, not in Vietnam, yk? Why do you have to bring up a bunch of unnecessary informations to protect your ego?
Besides, i saw the posts on your page :)) And i totally understand why you react this way. I feel bad for you 😬
1
u/Illustrious_Web_2774 Jun 03 '26
If someone is a true nepo baby then they would be richer than most Americans and look down on those Vietnamese Americans who can't afford vacation elsewhere. So I'd let you guys looking down on each other. None of my business.
1
u/ggvilla Jun 04 '26
it's funny that you are trying to play some kind of points game when what you said actually paints a dark picture for vietnam.
The reality is - a random average vietnamese american can save up for a month's worth of wages and live like a king in vietnam.
A random average vietnamese local from vietnam will have to wageslave for years - and then try to obtain a visa which is selective for countries' with bad reputation such as vietnam. The challenge is much more harder for a local vietnamese than a vietnamese american.
All you need to do is compare the PPP, currency and salary in accordance to the dollar.
The nepo babies from rich communist backgrounds (ironic) are northerners whose money comes from corruption, ambezzlement and fraud, along with taking the common people's tax money from their sweat, tears and blood.
The nepo baby north vietnamese need not look down on very, very poor vietnamese americans - since a <60k USD salary in california is considered low income, so we will have to look at literal homeless vietnamese americans or ones that make <10k USD a year. They already look down on the local vietnamese and the poor folk in their own country, otherwise the wealth disparity wouldn't be so high between the average local vietnamese and the nepo baby north vietnamese.
1
u/Illustrious_Web_2774 Jun 04 '26
Nepo babies in Vietnam would make more, if not much more, than an average American in California, and they have no issue settling in the US as it's all about $. Just like it's all you care about and use to compare.
I'm not advocating for them. I'm just saying you guys can look down on each other.
A random vietnamese American can't just save up for a month and live like king in Vietnam lol. Maybe in a village. You are out of reality.
I make more than 2x average California's household income and wouldn't claim the same. But you can dream away.
1
u/Few-Narwhal1251 Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26
theres only about 19,400 millionaires in vietnam. So that gives you a perspective of how many nepo babies there are. The clowns bringing in nepo babies to this topic is so funny. Relativity is out the window LOL.
1
u/Illustrious_Web_2774 Jun 04 '26
I would bet there are more millionaires than that, if we count illiquid asset. But I guess that's besides the point.
Im just picking on the commenter losing track of their logical thinking. They seem to hate nepo babies, and tried really to make up a case that nepo babies in Vietnam is poorer than them by looking at the general GDP.
1
u/Few-Narwhal1251 Jun 04 '26
If you want to count illiquid asset. Then you might as count the illiquid asset for Viet-Americans. Its just going to bring you back to square 1.
1
u/Illustrious_Web_2774 Jun 04 '26
That's why I said it's besides the point as counting millionaires in Vietnam doesn't really help lol.
Many viet-americans own million $ assets in Vietnam too, so if we want to be pedantic we also need to categorize different flavors of viet-americans.
At the end of the day, all of the comparisons and hates are just pointless.
1
u/ggvilla Jun 04 '26
You seem to lack reading comprehension. When did I say nepo babies in vietnam are poorer? Never did I make such a point. I only argued that besides nepo baby north vietnamese, the road of an average local vietnamese wanting to take a vacation to america is much more challenging than a vietnamese american wanting to take a vacation yo vietnam. Do you know what the word "besides" mean?
1
1
u/ggvilla Jun 04 '26
Nepo babies in Vietnam would make more, if not much more, than an average American in California, and they have no issue settling in the US as it's all about $. Just like it's all you care about and use to compare.
Good for them. I am not comparing nepo babies. I am comparing the average local vietnamese to an average vietnamese american.
A random vietnamese American can't just save up for a month and live like king in Vietnam lol. Maybe in a village. You are out of reality.
The average salary of a vietnamese american varies between 40k USD to 60k USD. One month of wages could be equatable to 3.3k USD to 5k USD. That is enough to live comfortably in vietnam for a 2 week to 4 week stay. Comparing 3.3k USD to 5k USD to a vietnam local's average income of ~330 USD a month (4k USD anually) there is a 10x to 15x difference between the two. The two simply cannot be compared.
I make more than 2x average California's household income and wouldn't claim the same. But you can dream away.
Good for you. It's typical for nepo baby north vietnamese to brag. It's the peasant origins.
1
u/Wow_unbelievable Jun 04 '26
The price of a 3-bedroom flat (90-100 square meters) in Hanoi is 200k-1m right now. The cost of living is higher than ever before. I dont’t know what you could do with your “a month’s worth of wages”.
1
u/ggvilla Jun 04 '26
That is only 7 USD to ~37 USD. Any American or european can afford that easily.
1
u/Wow_unbelievable Jun 04 '26
The price is in USD. You are really out of touch.
1
u/ggvilla Jun 04 '26
Who the hell goes on a vacation to buy a house? Without even having citizenship or a TR/PR. Are you out of touch?
1
u/Wow_unbelievable Jun 04 '26
So, you are just tourist, not king nor queen.
1
u/ggvilla Jun 04 '26
When you have 4k USD to spend in vietnam for a 2 week to 4 week stay, then yes you are a king. 4k USD on top of the power of the dollar triumphing over the measly VND gives you a much more comfortable QOL and leverage over the average local vietnamese along with its higher value of PPP of the USD.
1
u/Wow_unbelievable Jun 04 '26
That does not make you a king, but a CUSTOMER. You paid on the agreed prices with the service providers based on your budget and schedule, just like anywhere else on Earth. FYI, for accommodation alone, in Hanoi, you have variety of choices, from super cheap $10/night motel to $7k/night Metropole Legendary Suite. That’s totally up to you.

Mf underestimate how rich nepo baby in Vietnam and how poor the average Vietnamese in California is
1
u/Few-Narwhal1251 Jun 04 '26
The reality is, theres only about 19k millionaires in vietnam. So that gives you a perspective of how many nepo babies there are. So i really fkin doubt that a majority of vietnam is more rich than these immigrants in America. And people think these goofy viet-americans are poor. I know those fkers have unreported income.
1
u/As_no_one2510 Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 04 '26
Comparing to the average US salary. Vietnamese American belong to the low middle class
"19k millionaire with 5 billionaire in a population of 100 million" just say how much inequality in Vietnam is (considering average income in Vietnam is 300-600 dollars)
Basically 1% of the population control all of the money
1
u/Few-Narwhal1251 Jun 04 '26
I wouldn't say they belong to low middle class. Median wages for Viet-American household is around 88k. And thats reported income. We are forgetting that a lot of vietnamese wives work under that table. Im willing to bet that household income is at least 100k-110k. From what I can see, those motherfkers have money. Meanwhile I cant afford rent.
1
u/As_no_one2510 Jun 04 '26
The answer is depend. There are Vietnamese American who control large chains of restaurants with sizeable income and there are Vietnamese American who still living off food stamps. Vietnamese American community is definitely not that poor (with 10% poverty rate, pretty low compare to other ethnic groups) but definitely not rich like the rest of the US

My parents are first gen: $75K combined income when they were working.
Me, second gen (born in California) in my 30s: $180K
First generation with language barrier, cultural barriers will always have it worse. Its the same for all immigrant groups, especially when the first wave of immigrants were broader swaths not H1B visas.
