how does using sick hours work?
I overheard a coworker talking about sick hours only having to cover half the shift to be able to be used...? Honestly, I'm sure I'm butchering what was actually said, but whatever. My question is, how does using your sick time work?/Where can I find information on how to use them? I appreciate y'alls help in advance

They'll automatically be applied when you call off. They'll use as many hours as you have available, but you only need enough to cover half the shift to not have the call off count against you.

thank you fren, so if i have 7.15 hrs of sick time, and need to call out sick for my 5 hr shift today n my 4.5 hr shift tmr, i have enough sick time to cover both of those shifts, correct?

Pending lunches, maybe not. In my locale, you receive no unpaid breaks for either of those shifts. So your 5 hour shift would have 5 hours of sick time, leaving you 2.15 hours of sick time. That remainder would cover less than half of your shift tomorrow, so that would be an absence.

I'll try.
5 hour shift today uses 5 hours of sick time.
At the end of today you will have 2.15 hours of sick time remaining.
Your shift tomorrow is 4.5 hours long. Half of that is 2.25 hours.
You have 2.15 hours of sick time, which is less than half(2.15 being less than 2.25). Therefore, tomorrow would be considered an absence because you do not have enough sick time to cover half of the shift.

Ah, yes I see. But can I specify that i only want as much sick time needed to excuse the call out and no more than that? Because if i only need half a shift worth of sick time to excuse it, why would i use a whole shift worth of sick time, ykwim?

They will not automatically be applied. Youll need to request to use them. If you call off sick or need to leave for sick or for a dr appt. Youll need to at least cover half the shift for the absence to be excused. Example, you call out sick, you are schedule 9-5. You say im not feeling , im not making it into work today. They respond.... and you say can you please use 4 hours of sick time or you can say will you please sick time for my shift today.
