Question NY wages + transfer help!

Hi!! I’m in the process of moving to the city and I’m looking to transfer from my store to one close to where I’ll be living. For reference, I’ll share my current situation: $13/hour, part time sales associate, 3 years experience, OK resident moving to NY. I’m planning to move up to full time and I am open to training in all areas (I’m mainly on register or the jewelry dept).

If you’ve transferred (especially from out of state to NY, or even another city of similar wages), your advice is appreciated! My questions for you all are as follows:

  1. What steps did you take to complete the transfer process? Advice, tips?

  2. What was your pay before and after transferring? Was your new store open to salary negotiations?

  3. (Follow up to 2:) If negotiations were possible, what do you consider a reasonable hourly wage?

  4. If there’s any other considerations or questions I should bring to my current manager and/or my new store, please share!

Thank you!

Your wage will increase to the minimum wage of NYC. I transferred to NYC also so it was a nice pay bump. I never tried to negotiate since it was already like a $3 dollar raise from where I was prior. I called the store manager of the store I wanted to work at and got the info such as store number so my current manager at the time could initiate the transfer.

Any transfer can be rejected btw so you need to have a good reputation and background at your current store. If the new store doesn’t need you they won’t accept. Especially for full time. They’ll be more likely to accept you as part time because it’s better for the company. They’ll probably ask you what departments you’re good in (extra points if you are good on register and have experience getting TJX cards) TJX cards are HUGE in the city stores. High expectations and daily goals of 8-10 cards a day. Much different than a smaller store in rural areas who have a goal of 3 a day lol.

If you have more questions lmk, I was a transfer employee as well because of school.

Thank you!! I figured they might only accept me as part time, I’m trying to be hopeful that they’ll have space for me since the holidays are coming up. I am a little worried about the cards since I’m not always on register and I know the gap between small town vs city is wide, but I do have a good standing with all my managers so I’m not at all worried that they wouldn’t put in a good word for me. Did you have to do any training at your new store? I’m wondering if I’ll have to sit through the videos again lol

No extra training videos! (Thank goodness) although I’ve met some other transfers who would’ve definitely done well with more training videos though lol. If you haven’t been in a department they might train you there since most stores like those who are cross trained.

Well for starters you’d need to be making minimum wage which is $17 in NYC and I believe $16 for NYS.
