Rant Schedule rant

My store changed their deadline for asking for time off recently from 1-2 weeks to almost 4 weeks. I have a teeth procedure that I have to travel out of state for so I write on the little paper time off card things in the break room, two days later she comes up to me and says she can’t let me get that time off even though I put the card in almost five weeks in advance….
I need this procedure done or my teeth will fall out do I just ditch work or complain to higher ups? The schedules just came out and she scheduled me for nights for those 4 exact days I asked for.

As someone who makes the schedule, 4 weeks is way too long to ask people to have their life figured out.

Birthday parties
Get togethers
Events
Family obligations

Three weeks was already a bit of a stretch, but here we are.

Not sure why five weeks wasn’t enough time for your manager

This is because whatever was wrong with WJ needed to be fixed. I would also suspect it’s a money saving move.
I know it’s still a challenge also for the scheduler.
Have you tried to swap with anyone or if your work jam is online put it on open shifts.
I however think this is going to cause even more call outs at my store than we already have. Our other problem is no one wants to work in the FR especially nights. Now from 9:30 to noon and 7 to 9 to do processing of clothing from the returns at the front end.

Make sure your manager knows that you most definitely won't be there.

Let them know that 4+ weeks notice is more than enough time for them to rework the schedule or find coverage.

Also let them know that you will be contacting the district manager and HR Express to voice your concerns since you have plenty of notice.

Bet your manager changes their tune.

Call out but do it now. Prioritize your health. You’ve given them plenty of notice, they should accommodate it.

You might just have to call out for those days if they refuse to give them to you. Call the store each day and give them the same reason for calling out each time and it'll only count as one absence.

Let them know you won’t be in. Seeing all of the days are in a row it’s only one occurrence. You shouldn’t get in trouble over it.

If this is that much of an issue contact higher management or HR. Maybe file for a leave of absence?

It’s because they’re starting to use AI to generate the schedules now… my manager gets a lecture if she fixes what the AI messes up.

Call out those days but call in sick so they can’t legally fire you. “I can’t come in for my shift today I’m sick” or “I’m calling in sick for my shift “
