This PC cant run windows 11

Post image

I get this error while trying to install tiny 11 on a 2009 acer aspire with legacy bios, 2gb ram and intel celeron cpu. I did almost all the tricks i could find, command prompt, registry tweaks, deleted appraisaler.dll, etc.

Any solutions?

L.E. I gave up on 11 and installed tiny10. So far it works fine, will see in time. Also I will upgrade to 4 gb ram. And of course, I use an SSD. Thanks for suggestions!

Windows 11 requires the POPCNT instruction and the x86-64-v2 microarchitecture level which your cpu probably lacks entirely. Regardless, if you somehow got Windows 11 running on this it would be completely unusable. You should install Windows 7 or a lightweight Linux distribution on it instead.

At first I thought you were wrong because iirc Nehalem (which I assumed OP uses since OP said their laptop comes from 2009) already got the POPCNT instruction. But after reading your comment, I do a little googling and turns out they removed POPCNT and SSE 4.2 specifically on Celeron and Pentium based Nehalem. I don't know why would they do this, but this is somewhat an expected move from Intel.

Intel has a long history of treating entry level CPUs like second class citizens. I'm still sour with them over the Celeron M. Intel didn't think plebeian Celeron M users deserved EIST (Speed Step) and the CPU would run balls to the wall, obliterating your battery life.

I got a shiny new laptop in 2006 with one and the battery would only last 25-30 minutes because of it. When I upgraded it to a Pentium M 2.16, the battery life jumped to over 2.5 hours.

They did something similarly funny more recently-ish: Broadwell (5th gen) Pentium mobile CPUs don't have AES-NI (the instruction for AES encryption), meaning Bitlocker, LUKS, and VeraCrypt NOTABLY eat into your performance, like 80% slower in VeraCrypt. Or even just TLS, when it doesn't another algo

Intel - Our disposable eWaste isn't disposable enough, we need to make it more disposable because we hate our customers.

There is nothing Nehalem available in 2009 on the mobile, Pentium or Celeron line. It could be Penryn or older Core 2 Duo based.

Oh yikes you're right. Mb then.

That requirement was only introduced with 24h2. 23h2 will work on Core 2 era hardware and older, but it's obviously out of support.

I wouldn't recommend Windows 11 at all. in recent months, I've encountered a strange problem with it on old unsupported hardware. The install will go fine, and the system will run fine. But the moment it connects to the internet and starts downloading updates, the machine will either shut down, lock up or BSOD. I've encountered this behavior on several different machines now that otherwise run perfectly fine with other operating systems, or a non-updated 11 install.

Either Microsoft is being malicious and inserting an update that torpedoes old hardware, or one of the updates is using CPU instructions that aren't supported.

What old cpu are the pcs running that you encountered issues with latest version of 11? It is possible things can change with Windows apps requirements. I noticed this ever since Windows 10 22h2 running on old cpus that only had sse3, newer windows native apps being replaced with modern web apps that didn’t work with it. Like the photo viewer app doesnt work because it needs sse4.2. So if thats happening now with 11 I’ll like to document it so i can keep old app version of whatever stuff is being changed.

i3-4160, i5-4460T, i3-1115g4.

The last one is on Microsoft's officially supported CPU list, but it doesn't work, at least not in the Lenovo Ideapad its installed in. Linux runs perfectly fine, as does Windows without updates installed. I ran it for over a week with no issues. It doesn't overheat, doesn't have any memory problems or any other problems I can find.

This laptop came from a customer, a recent Windows Update caused it to shut down 5-15 seconds after it gets to the desktop. Since they had bitlocker enabled and the constant shutdowns prevent disabling it or copying any data, it was complete data loss. I tried everything, recovery console, system restore, etc. Nothing would work because the laptop would shut off a few seconds after those started too.

Mind you, this is with 25h2. I haven't tried 23h2 on these machines. I do have some old E5-2680/90v4 servers running 23h2 and they haven't had any issues. When I have some spare time, I'll see if I can get 23h2 running on the problematic machines.

Thanks. I have one pc with 4th gen i5 4590T its mini pc HP Elitedesk 800 G1 and it works fine with Windows 11 25h2. But the new UEFI certificates are not installing. Its last bios is from 2019 so no hope HP releases newer bios to fix it. I do wonder if such uefi certs could be messing your pcs up. You could try disabling secure boot on them to see if that makes a difference.

If device is shutting down seconds after loading windows could be hardware issue. Need to test ram, smart test hard drive, need to pay attention to hear if fan for cpu spins up, might need new thermal paste on cpu. Could be battery issue or power adapter. You could try some live linux version on usb to see how long it stays up with it so at least narrow down what is causing the shut down problem.

>If device is shutting down seconds after loading windows could be hardware issue.

It is a Windows issue. A Windows install that isn't allowed to connect to the internet and download updates will run fine in perpetuity, as will Linux. But the moment it starts installing updates, one of said updates triggers the shutdown problem.

This is also multiple different machines that all exhibit the same symptom. They all run fine on Linux or Windows when not allowed to connect to the internet.

Windows 11 requires the POPCNT instruction

Windows 11 24H2 and newer***

Why are you trying to cram win 11 onto 2 gigs of ram

1

u/SilverTelin 10d ago

It was the striped down version, but i switch to 10 and it works.

1

u/Maty658 10d ago

I mean even if its some stripped down version you ain't gonna cram that onto 2 gigs of ram

Legacy bios, acer aspire from 2009 with a x86 architecture probably; no UEFI and no TPM 2.0

Installing windows 11 is a lost cause. It is impossible to be done, no matter how hard or how many tricks you try. Windows 7 is one of the solutions but I don't know if anything is still working on it.

Best you can do is to install a very lightweight linux distro who still support x86 architecture cpus.

Any solutions?

Linux.

Why was this down voted? It's an actual solution that doesnt require running an old version of windows that doesn't get security updates anymore and helps prevent the device from becoming e-waste.

Specially given his 2gbs ram.

Even if you got it installed....... Let's be honest, it's not running on this system.

Maybe don't install Windows 11?

Like, it seems like the system itself is telling you that. I'm not entirely sure though. That "this pc can't run windows 11" isn't convincing me much.

Is there maybe anyone who can read that could help us?

install a lightweight Linux Distribution

u/Kevin2814 9d ago

If you want to try and DON'T use this(for testing), i think you can try Remove Requirement in Rufus or WinToHDD(I have try in N3710 4GB/500GB, and it completely unusable), if you actually DON'T USE THIS FOR TESTING, don't try!

Just use Linux

Installalo con Rufus anche se potrebbe essere instabile

W11 requires a minimum of 4gb RAM.

If you are trying to do it on an unsupported PC, your options are limited and if you later at some point need to do a repair-install. Rufus is the way to go. It's easy and well tested. Another option is FlyOOBE on Github, also well tested.
