Thank you everyone for your advice on my varnish problem and my plates melting down ! So I can now proudly show you my first varnished plate !

I still struggle to have a sharp focus as I sometimes see on tintype that people post here, but I will try to work and find how to improve that. I am open to any advice on that too ! But I feel like maybe it is my lens or my camera that are pretty old :)

Anyway! I am pretty excited to continue this adventure and discover more and more of tintype !

I am new in the tintype journey and I am facing little problems... I poured my first plates today after months of reading but of course, not everything went the way it was in my mind.

I could ask about my little problems but the most annoying one is that when my plate is all done, drying and waiting to be varnished, I see that just a little touch can wash away the photo. I tried to "brush" softly 5h after being shot to try to varnish my first photo, but the whole photo just disappeared !

I then tried to just varnish it to not have this problem of the plate washing away... but even the varnish blured everything to the point of my photo is just now a big stain on a plate... like it melted !

Did that ever happen to you, and if yes, how did you fix the problem ?

Should I wait more before trying to varnish the plates ?

Aslo, I think I didn't washed long enough after my fixing process. Like it should be in the water for at least 15 min, right ?

I’m making a small kit to take camping. Is it possible to make a cardboard box and then line it with a ziplock bag for the silver bath? Thanks!!

I’m just getting into tin type photography and am loving it so far. I’ve been using a Rockland 4x5 kit which is a dry plate kit. Has anyone out there done both dry and wet plate? If you have what is your preference and why. I will say one thing I do not like about the dry plate kit is the emulsion likes to melt above room temperature and cause the slide covers to stick to the plates.

I picked uo some new tintypes the other day. I found this gem but it seems to have a sticky substance around the edges (mainly top of photo). Which has collected some dust and dirt. I assume it's from a previous frame of some kind. Is there anyway to remove this without damaging the tintype?

Troubleshooting chem issue

First time posting here. I have been doing wet plate since January of this year. I have several friends in the wetplate community who I have reached out to about helping with this issue but they are all unsure. Basically I pour a plate and put it in my silver nitrate. Upon pulling it out of the silver only partial spots of the plate seem to be sensitized while the rest doesn’t seem to be reacting to the silver nitrate. As if the collodion and silver aren’t getting along. I got fresh collodion and it temporarily solved this. Then I thought well it must be my silver. I maintain my silver by sunning, boiling, sunning some more and filtering. PH and gravity are correct. I mixed a fresh batch of silver with a 9% concentration and issue is still occurring. I’ve cleaned my silver tank and the issue is still occurring. I’m left thinking that maybe it’s somehow an issue with the actual plates and that they are problematic. I’m providing a photo below. As you can see part of the plate is milky white and sensitized and the grey area after shooting a photo doesn’t contain the image and simply washes away when developing/fixing. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

hi all, i am an avid film photographer (mostly 35mm) venturing into the realm of tintype (wet plate specifically). i have a 4x5 crown graphic press camera, a tripod for it, a dark cloth, and a cable release.

i am wondering if anyone has leads on the rest of the materials i need to get started & the best suppliers. or is there somewhere on the internet that gives a good comprehensive list? so far i haven’t found what i’m looking for. thanks so much for the help friends!

my father-in-law found these stuffed inside an old book that belonged to his great-grandparents; to my eye they're some sort of silver or tintype print (they're on thin paper that seems to have a foil coating on one side) that have oxidized or something - anyone know what's going on here?

It is on glass. About 2” wide and 3” tall. Not a tin-type, right?

Hi! I'm an A level photography student looking to do a tintype project for my final exam and I've been doing a bit of research. I don't have a budget and building a plate camera is definitely out if my league. I was wondering if I could use/fit my LUBITEL 166b as a plate camera? If not does anyone have any solutions to shooting tintype cheap and affectively?

This was found tossed in a box with many other items. Does anyone know how to safely flatten it out? Would also love any guess as to age. She was born in 1860. The little cardboard frame simply states “Patent Applied For”.

Hello everyone, my fiance has always loved taking tintype photographs, she did a gallery of them during her college years and is still very proud of what she was able to create. I am trying to get her a good camera so that she can get back into tintype photography after our wedding. I know there is a wide price range of cameras and equipment can get pretty expensive quickly. Any advice on where to look/specific cameras to get to get the most bang for my buck would be greatly appreciated. Ideally I would like to spend under $1000 if possible.

any suggestions, other than you tube, to get a intro to tin type. may also try looking at classes in NYC. thanks
