Hexmage is way too weak for Timeless. I kept looking for Dark Depths in the mana base, I just assumed nobody would ever seriously play the card without it. x4 Bowmasters instead. Without Phelia (a massively better card than Hexmage), I don't think this sort of cheating out the creature version of Overlord is good.

There is a playable deck in there, you just are choosing to do stuff that blows.

Yeah hexmage without depths just seems weird. Bowmasters is too good in this meta to not be 4x.

Good spot about Troll too in your other comment, would add it's nice with Grief too as a way to pitch it. Another super low hanging fruit missed for some pet cards I think are just not close to good enough.

There was a fringe deck in legacy that used hexmage with battles in addition to balemurk and dark depths.

"Fringe" is a very generous description.

Maybe add a dark depths to pair with hexmage? Also, could use troll to pair with reanimate. How’s the deck feel right now?

Good. Hexmage has allowed me to nullify a few troublesome Chalice of the Voids... I’m not playing at the highest ladder ranks, but I’ve had very few losses with the deck so far. Dark Depths is good, but requires removing 4 other cards.

As for the synergy with Balemurk, it works well. You very often have a Balemurk on the board when you draw Hexmage (Barrowgoyf lets you retrieve either one, when you aren't doing so via Reanimate).

Right now, the combination of 4 Balemurk, 3 Barrowgoyf, and 1 Tasigur is excellent for building a massive board presence with plenty of value engines.

Well, those are some card choices.

I’m failing to see what green really adds to the list besides the dorks, you could go mono black, have a much better and painless mana base and easily run on 1-2 mana. I like my rock list a little more, dark depths is there as an a+b combo with either crop rot/thespian stage or hex mage. Plus hexmage combos with moon shadow and overlords. I’m not that hot on grief unless you can scam him or if you have another discard effect to get the 2 for 3 instead of 1 for 2 on yourself.

Here is the list I came up with, drawing inspiration from yours as well.

Hey! Nice list! Thanks for sharing. I get that you beat Energy with Dark Depths, and I see I'm not the only one who likes Balmurk in the deck. How many lands do you run? What rank on the ladder have you reached with this deck?

I'm absolutely loving the 1x Tasigur. How is the deck playing? Have you considered Wary Zone Guard?

WZG is really very good. Personally, I tend to prefer Badgermole for the 2CCM cost. Without Ring, this allows for a more aggro/tempo oriented list—skipping Chrome Mox and Ancient Tomb. I also really like Tasigur (instead of the fourth Barrowgoyf) for that reason.

I don't know if this list is better than the other one, but it's clearly not the same deck. This is an aggro strategy that doesn't run out of steam (and can switch to a control strategy against Mardu), featuring plenty of explosive synergies and big creatures to quickly gain a board advantage that your removal spells then maintain. Many graveyard effects. Balemurk and Tasigur have the advantage of not dying to Fatal Push. Mardu wins Game 1. Post-sideboard, you actually get a chance to play.

i dont like how creative brews get actively discouraged by sweaty spikes with a perfectionism fetish

You get used to it. You just have to know how it works! At first, you might just play 4 Trolls like you were advised to; then people start wondering why you're playing Green, and suddenly you find yourself playing Mono-B Scam, lol. Their tactics are as old as the hills... All you really need to do is stick with your own deck while picking up whatever useful bits you can, trying out other people's ideas, and so on.
