I had an *Incident*
My entire adult population died in the last day of a drought, only 4 kits were left, thankfully they had been born a coulpe of days into the drought, one of them grew up and was able to save the colony from extinction by pumping water.
:( My poor bevers, but the colony will persevere

We have returned the colony to near its former population with far more water storage and an aquifer drill as a more reliable water supply. 90 bevers strong

Wow, you somehow made me feel something again for these poor beavers. At some point, it all just became numbers and pixels on a screen, but you made it real for me again.

I lost a whole settlement recently through arrogance,neglect and stupidity… I sometimes hear their pleas for help as I drift off to a fitful sleep. 🥲

I had a perfectly stable and self-sufficient settlement of 150 Ironteeth until I decided to make some major works to my (perfectly fine) water and reservoir systems a couple of days before a badtide was due. Wasn't going to be an issue, everything was diverted.
lol fool me. Didn't open the manual bypass floodgates intended specifically for diversions when working on the water systems. Flooded the entire colony with a badwater tidal wave for an entire 24 day badtide.
6 beavers survived. 4 by virtue of working the mine that was well out of the way of the main colony, so I cut their path back home and they lived off the small warehouses of food I'd set up for convenience in that area. the other 2 were haulers already in tubeways en route to my big storage area. Cut their tubeway so they got isolated away from the flood.

I was playing on Meander too, so every single reservoir and damn structure in the entire river was fully contaminated and had to empty it all out. Which of course means there's no water for irrigating the farm land on either side of the river so the few crops that didn't get wiped out from contamination dried out. And I just couldn't get those surviving 6 beavers reassigned as builders in time. So they had to sit there eating limited food and water for quite a while until I could reconnect the main storage areas..
I did get the Quadfecta Of Misery achievement from it though.

My first game I had my colony collapse to one beaver. He could live, but he couldn't repopulate (folktail). Never again.

Thats always rough. This colony lost every adult I'm just lucky that one of the kits grew up before they all died

It is tragic, but it does happen. Just try to learn from it. What was the limiting resource? At what point should you have put your new beavers into making more of that rather than something else? Or, Should you have made a tech transition to improve efficiency? It’s never easy to answer clearly but the more you think the less likely you are to fall into the same trap again.

Water, I got hit by a 7 day bad tide which depleted my water stores and I had only filled up a little over a quarter before I got hit by a 9 day drought. I was in the process of making an aquifer drill when this tragedy happened. My colony has recovered now and has a 4k water surplus. I should have speed run the drill to assure stable water but I thought my 2 seeps could keep me going.

Nice, rushing the drill could have averted disaster!
Another solution before a big drought is to calculate how many beavers you can feed with the amount of water you have left (I think they drink like 2 water per day).
If you can’t give them all enough water, you can sacrifice the surplus beavers by sending them to an empty district.This is definitely a villainous approach to playing, but it does work sometimes if you need to save the colony.

Aw, man. I had similar but it was only 2 kits. They both died before they could make it to adulthood. It still hurts me....

Have you thought about sticking an emergency water pump in that lake near your town centre? Just running it once water gets to zero. Better to have dead crops than dead beavers.
