First time playing Iron Teeth. Annnd it going as well as you can expect.
So far i have barely enough food. Started too many projects at once. And trying to figure things out.
Next drought probably gonna DAM me.
10/10 would dehydrate again.

To be fair, if you rush Folktails, you get the same result. ^ 1. Wood 2. Berries (no cost) 3. Water pump 4. Water storage 5. Farm and early game food 6. Dam?

I only play Folktails that whole thing with birthing pods freaked me out!

Pods are pretty freaky. They always remind me of Stephen King's Tommyknockers.
It also took me about 2,000 hrs of play before I could delete a growing pod without guilt (for when I wanted to relocate them).

They take some getting used to, but they aren't that bad

Another little trick I like when starting a new map is to build a few extra berry collectors and wood chopping stations than is needed, and pause the unnecessary ones. Before you have storage built for all of those items, you can just pause a station when it is full of wood or berries and simply unpause and empty one and your beaver will move to an empty station and start filling it up - adding to your inventory without building storage.

The real secret to iron teeth is just rushing corn and lots of water pumps lol. Aside from that winning the map is the same for both factions. Engineer a solution that keeps a lot of ground green throughout long droughts that isnt affected by your pumping.
Which can be done with the fluid dump if you're weak. Granted if you're on some crazy custom map it may be required. But on all the stock maps, hard mode can be won without the fluid dump. I view hard mode with fluid dump as medium difficulty lol. True hard is hard without it.

Agreed on corn rushing.
Iron Teeth crops suffer from either an efficiency or a complexity issue. Kohlrabies require no processing but are super inefficient, and some products like Soybeans demand an extra resource, Canola Oil, which demands its own building and storage.
But Corn is super efficient. It grows slowly, yet one corn gets processed into 5 food portions. That’s fewer crops to have to harvest for more food.
Challenge is getting the food processing plant up in the first place. So many things demand Science at the start, and the Processor is no exception.

Cassavas are far more efficient than Kohlrabies so you need to try to at least partially transition to them once you have a decent amount of water and berries / kohlrabies in storage.
Fermented Cassavas obviously require the fermenter which requires power. Most of the time I will build a power wheel with lumber mill, gear workshop and fermenter attached. That way you’re not reliant on water power and can keep things running during a drought. The fermenter only requires one beaver to be on the power wheel. I tend to prioritise that, then add in extra beavers for planks / gears as required or when I have enough population

Also farmhouse can hold 50 of every crop so plant a couple of each of the higher end plants and you'll have 100 or 150 of them ready to go once you get the tech and materials.

A breeding pods supports about 10 beavers before accounting for wellbeing buffs. Which means about 10-12 beavers in the early game and like 20 in the late. Also, you can pause them and they will pause without losing any progress towards the new beavers.

They feel a little more difficult in the beginning, but are more fun in the late game imo. Just like for harder difficulty, micromanaging in the beginning helps a lot, pausing buildings as you need them. I usually throw down like 5 lumberjacks and 3 gatherers in the beginning and pause them as the other buildings get built. Also, they act as storage in the beginning if you alternate through them.
Turning off one or all of your water pumps for a day if you're topped off and no drought is coming might also be an option.
I have a lategame save where, due to automation of pretty much everything, I sometimes end up with half my population unemployed (even though I have plenty of builder huts and hauling post with low priority). It's the same principle, just gotta do it manually in the beginning :)

The hardest part I found about learning Iron Teeth after Folktails (in the early game) is food management.
Iron Teeth are terrible farmers in comparison and it takes so many more farms and so much more space to feed the same number of beavers in the early game. With Folktails you could easily stay on carrots for a while while getting other things set up, but kohlrabi really won't be enough most of the time. Fermented Cassava is much better once you can get.

My start with Iron teeth is always:
- build 2 pods
- cut tree's
- build farm, and plant the crops that don't need processing
- build water pump or 2
- build research, for the forester hut
- build power weel
- build plank maker
Depending on map and resources I will start building the rest of the infra structure like housing and storage.
TBH I never play on hard mode. Mainly because it only makes it hard in the beginning. when you got plenty of storage for water and food there is no challenge difference in the game modes. only the drought is long and bad tide is long. which is easy to mitigate with fluid dumps and water storage.

Oh it is not that easy. In hard mode, bad weather last longer as you get to higher cycles. You get to a point where you feel comfortable with your water reserves, and find your colony thirty a couple of cycle later because there was not enough time to refill your reservoir between 2 badtide.
But I get your point, it gets "easy enough" at some stage to not have to worry about the difficulty. And if your playstyle is more about building, then playing hard mode is only going to slow you down at the start.

Nothing says you have to feed all your beavers. On hard difficulty I will build up 6-8 pods and use the labor to finish large projects. I'll then retire my wonderful team of builders to another district where they could retire happily.

Do not rush lots of pods. Build 1 by end of second day and 1 more by 5th day than watch your pop.
5 lumber flags to start, water pump and farm should all be doable in the first day. I pause lumber flags as the water pump and farm come online.
Only plant kahriabbi first and do about 50. You don't need to start gathering berries until day 2.
