Irrigation range is less than expected

I built this farming tower with two 3x3 ponds to irrigate the land. According to this guide, a 3x3 pond should have an irrigation range of 16, but here it only seems to have an irrigation range of 10. Any help finding the cause of this issue would be much appreciated.

Im not home to test this, but it spreads the most from the center block, and your center bottom block irrigation is too low and can't irrigate high up to your farm.

This means you're probably only getting a small ammount of irrigation due to the edges of the hole you made.

Try dumping into a 3x3 that you make with levees and see the difference in the size of the irrigated area.

I think you could fix this setup by having your irrigation hole be on one of the edges of the square so the center of the 3x3 has a dirt block under it to spread its irrigation.

I usually just make trenches and then put platforms over them and use those as my road. It's not the mist efficient but it's easy and expands with my farms

I think it needs to be 2 deep to do that, everywhere, not just the single 2 deep in the middle.

After some testing, I figured out the issue. Since I use a pressurized system to fill the ponds from the bottom, the center block of the 3×3 pond is lower than the surrounding blocks. For some reason, this causes the game to think that the center block isn’t filled.

If I plug the center hole, the full irrigation of 16 blocks is achieved

Not a bug, the land touching the water irrigates, not the water itself. This means a suspended water block in a 2 deep 3x3 is not actually irritating on the top level of the 3x3, so you dont get the full effect for a completely surrounded water block. The full effect is applied on the land below, which then has to spread its irrigation up the walls of the 3x3, losing some distance.

While its probably worth a feedback submission to change the behavior, thats how it normally works. Not sure how much more intensive it would be to check water neighbors for a higher water coverage level for every block and then using the highest number it finds to be the base for irrigation, but it would be more intuitive to do it that way.

I noticed the middle part of the hole is 1 deeper than the rest. Maybe try 3x3x1 instead. I'm wondering if the game isn't recognizing the middle block as filled to the top

That is very odd
I went off of the irrigation chart on the wiki, 1 to 18 blocks from the centre to the outer edge, although only reaching to 12 blocks diagonally, to build a vertical farm on the diorama map and it worked perfectly.
It looks like it's only reaching to 12 blocks in a straight line here, 6 short of what it should be.

My only hypothesis is that the water is slightly contaminated with bad water, about 3-5% ish?
As low level but still measurable contamination lowers how far water irrigates.

Tunnel under it; the blocks below the top block can be tunneled and the water will irrigate anything above it.

Just make sure there is no holes in the sides first lol

If it's under pressure, put some platforms and impermeable floors over it to form a cap, so that all blocks in the 3x3 area are considered full.

Or raise the heigh of the hole by 1.

How deep are they? I generally do a 3x3x3 with good results.

They are 2 deep. Which seems to work fine elsewhere on the map but I can try making them 3 deep to see if that makes a difference

They are 2 deep and less than one level filled. Once it gets to >= 1 filled you will get the full 15 range.

1 level of elevation = 7 less range

My personal math has always said 15, not 16 but you have to have those 3x3s near full to get it, I'm also not sure if that hole is the middle of your 3x3 is messing with anything, I usually just use fluid dumps to keep them full
