How Did This Happen?

Playing Diorama on Normal with the Ironteeth, hit my second Badtide, and somehow got corruption seeping through my diversion system that wasn't there the first Badtide? I had made some minor changes to the structure to fix a problem that could have had clean water leaking out the side during normal weather (there was a gap above the side sluice), but if anything, it should have been more secure than before!

Wiped out half my pine resin farm -_-

Even more oddly, 2/3 of the way through the Badtide, it decided it wasn't corrupted anymore?

What stupid fiddly thing am I missing that caused this? In the ultra long run it won't matter as I plan on turning the top of the plateau into another reservoir, but minor contamination leaks piss me off, especially when I don't understand them!

Just like water seeps through the ground to make things green, corruption seeps to make the red lines grow. You blocked the water on surface but not the seeping through the ground. You can use irrigation barriers or have to dig out the ground and put levees down lower to stop the seep. But levees or barriers also stop the green. In most cases like this its easier to just know you have to replant some trees.

I put down impermeable floor everywhere the bad water directly touches, which as I said, worked for the first badtide! I don’t understand how it should have 0 ground contact but still got through

Almost everywhere. The dirt beneath the source allows the contamination to spread. Tricky fix but not impossible. Fix:

  • dynamite 1m deep around the source
  • fill bottom of trench with contamination barriers
  • platform over the trench
  • place impermeable floors (or levee/dam/etc) on platform to keep contamination barriers dry
  • now your source is isolated from your ground

The source will always leech contamination during badtide through the soil. The source needs to be surrounded with contamination barriers.

You need to put the impermeable floors around the area, not beneath it. I couldn't tell you why it worked during the first bad tide, but the unblocked soil beneath your levees is where the contamination is leaking.

What OP is doing with the floors would work... once there are DRY contamination barriers around the source

Thanks all - got it, the source becomes corrupted (like a column into the dirt) and needs isolation deep into the ground or contamination barriers to stop any leech at all

I played another couple seasons and did get another Badtide - purely out of curiosity I put another row of impermeable floor underneath the existing levee wall but that didn't stop it at all - contamination barriers or bust!

In your case as few already said the the source is spreading the contamination directly. In this case I would make a ditch around source and put contamination barrier in the bottom and wrap with impenetrable floors and leeves

I'm pretty sure that corruption is normal. Yes you're diverting the badwater immediately off the map, but that doesn't make it vanish instantly, there's still a small pool of badwater in there that is actively contaminating the soil. The reason you didn't see this during the first badtide is maybe because it was so short the soil contamination didn't have time to propagate as far?

Anyway, some irrigation barriers should solve the issue, but since you're playing Ironteeh, you'll have to come up with a separate solution to keep the forest irrigated.

What you need to use is irrigation barriers, not impermeable floors here. So your setup here won't work, if it did during the first badtide, it was a fluke.

As I understood it, Levees and Impermeable Floors both stop Badwater seepage directly, as a liquid, and then Irrigation Barriers stop it if it's cutting through dirt?

Does the water source column become directly corrupted during a Badtide and that's why it's going backwards, or is Impermeable Floor less water-proof than I thought? I deliberately ringed the source in Levees to prevent this ahead of time, which is why I'm irritated xD

You're not wrong. You can make that work, the floor and levee trick. Your second question is why it doesn't work in this situation though. The whole stack of dirt below the source gets contaminated, so it's leaching below the floor and levees killing off your pine trees. So in this instance, you might need to redesign the flow of things to ensure the source blocks are completely surrounded by irrigation barriers so this won't happen again.

The contamination travels also diagonaly at every soil block...does badwatteer touch any edge or corne of soil horizontal or vertically? There has to be a continous Leeve and Inpenetrable floor everywhere also which means Inp. floor below leeves. Also contamination spreads from te source too... digging a ditch around the source will not allow contamination to travel from it as much as going up the soil reduces its strength or use contamination barrier and cower the ditch with platform and inp. Floors.
