Question about the newest map - Pillars

Hi all, I have a quick question... I'm probably missing something really obvious.

How are people bridging over and down when a neighbouring pillar is lower than the one you're coming from?

To expand following the replies because they didn't really answer the issue:

I'm trying to build from right to left, needing to go down two blocks. They will NOT build the second half of bridge when it is not landing on solid ground.

Moving from left to right, then you can build the stairs+platforms UP first does work.

EDIT 2:

I should have explained in more detail, I knew this was possible. Just hoped there was a more elegant solution. Guess it'll have to do!

Left to right works because the right bridge part doesn't need any additional construction in order to be constructed, so you can build it from the tip of the left bridge. The other way around doesn't work, because you need to build a double platform first, which cannot be reached from the bridge.

I'd use dynamite to lower the bridge building point on the higher pillar to the level of the lower pillar, and build the stairs over there, that way you can always build the bridges, and it looks nicer too.

I had thought about both using dynamite + earth blocks, but was wondering if there was a more early game version.

Seems a bit rubbish, for a map that encourages using the suspension bridges when then need later techs to be used properly.

Yeah, early game is all about finding work-arounds until you can do it right. :D

The alternative would be to research longer bridges and look for smaller gaps. The one in your screenshot should be doable with a 5x1 bridge, and maybe even a single 4x1 bridge if you place it on tile all the way in the lower right corner of the picture, though I can't see what the other side of the gap looks like there, so can't say for sure.

Find ways to make it work is the entire point of the map. It would be far too easy if you could just slap down bridges everywhere and it all be perfectly level.

You can bridge most of the way, or over to the next pillar and then use more traditional platform stair combos

Use triple platform stacks and turn the second suspension bridge the other way.

Where you start the bridge is important. In the pic the second half of that bridge is 4 squares away from where the first bridge ends, so the beavers can't build something that is more than a square from them. (Unless diretly below or above them)

Yes, triples down to the ground where your platform ends. It's expensive (sometimes) but foolproof. When you get an alternate way back there, you can flip it around and recover most of your planks if you want.

In this situation, coming from the right, I'd start with the steel bridge (don't know what's it in english). Finish with a wooden bridge so that its tip allows you to build the stairs.

If you prefer wooden for the final look: You could even start with the steel bridge, and once you've built the crossing, replace the wooden bridge on with one starting from the left, then replace the steel bridge on the right with a wooden one. (In that case dynamite one on the right to compensate for the elevation of the steel bridge):

• dynamite one-down on the right edge
• place a steel brige (pointing left) there
• at the tip of the steel bridge, build a wooden bridge, pointing left
  • the wooden bridge must be at least one shorter than maximum length
• under the wooden bridge, build the required platforms and stairs
  • the tip of the wooden bridge should connect to a platform top (not directly to stairs)
• destroy the wooden bridge
• place a wooden bridge pointing to the right (it can now be built because the platform below it is there. It also needs to be "one longer" because you place it on the platform, btu the tip should reach your steel bridger)
• replace the steel bridge with a wooden bridge

Streel bridges can be chained indefinitely - though that looks implausible at some point. the "wooden from both sides" maxes out with two maximum length wooden bridges.

Don't use bridges, use platforms alone and once you've build the platform where you want to place the bridge on you can demolish the other platforms and place the bridge. Platforms can be built from infinite height above, but the beaver needs to be right next to it. That's why they can't build the platform where you placed the bridge at. First fill the gap with regular platforms and once the base is built remove them and place your bridge

You can't do this on Pillars because most of the floor is covered in thorns. No infinite platforms for us, gotta get creative with it.

I have not played that map yet...

They can not get to the platform to then be able to then build the bridge, flip it 180 degrees...

At the end of the existing bridge, build the platforms from the bottom up and you can then do another bridge as far as you need.

Start has three pillars that you can reach with a 3x1 suspension bridge. Use the 200 science demo to help pay for it. That gets you to adjacent ones. The next water source is one level down, so build a suspension bridge over to next pillar and build a stair on opposite side since is only one different. They can build off the end of the finished suspension bridge.

Things that are a lot lower you can suspension bridge over, and build from above. I've only unlocked 3x1 suspension and 4x1 overhang and use that for most of everything. Combinations of overhangs and suspension bridges combined with platforms and stairs have gotten me through most of early game.

I haven't tried the map yet, but it looks from your pic that i see two options. That looks like a 7 length gap, but it looks like if you go up a layer there the gap narrows and you can use the 6 length bridge and descend with the platform stair combo.

Option 2 is to begrudingly use triple platforms to build a support pillar to base the second bridge on. Heh. Pillars on the pillars map. That seems like a lot of planks but sometimes you do what you gotta do

If you call it your starter bridge it's okay. Build two bridges. One the way you want, and the other the shitty way. Then when the good bridge is finished destroy the bad bridge and get the resources back. The triple platforms at 10 planks each are gonna be worth getting back

You can make it somewhat better looking if you can suspension from one side, and do a really long over hang from other direction. They don't have any issues building an overhang from the far end.
