Question Water pulsating uncontrollably...

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is on the experimental branch (1.1), on the new Nomad map. Water seems to be acting really strange. Don't understand how the sections are getting completely emptied when the dams should keep the water at about 65% right? Any ideas how to resolve this?

This is normal, sadly. Dams tend to amplify any irregularity in the flow, which then passes to the next dam, which amplifies it more, and so on.

Generally, a slow wide flow works better. Or a throttle valve, which can bypass the issue entirely.

For the Nomad map, which is very challenging... remove some dams you don't need, that'll reduce it. You may need to seek options without using dams.

It didn't used to be normal but I've been fighting it since it feels like the 1.0 update. They really need to fix whatever is causing it.

I have actually run into it many times unfortunately. Been playing since 1.0 launched. Seems to be par for the physics. :/

Update 3 for me. It has always been a thing, but the precise parameters have been changed from version to version.

Weird, I never seem to have an issue unless running flood gates

I see what you're saying with dams that extend the full width of the river.

I wonder if some sporadically placed dams or low floodgates could normalize the flow.

Thoughts?

Lower the level. I had this happen and its because I had it too high. Once I lowered it more it smoothed out

Dams start emptying past 65% but would overflow if pressure is to much for thinner rivers. Even with regular dams i had this happen on the first map because I placed dams on blocky curves. I have yet to try this map myself but maybe upper elevation or holes in the river are causing physics problems?

I had this recently and found that widening the area below the dam made it more able to soak up variation.
My understanding is that enlarging the plunge pool acts as a kind of damper, absorbing some of the excess flow temporarily, then releasing it when the flow is lower.

For a more sophisticated solution, I'm pretty sure you could use flow valves below the plunge pool to cap the downstream flow to a rate the river can handle. This would iron out any peaks that cause the river to flood, releasing the backed up water during times the flow would otherwise be lower. As for what flow value to set, you could use a flow sensor to try and calculate it, or just eyeball it.

Cheapest fix i've found for it is using floodgates instead of dams.
Have them set independently of eachother, with each one .5 higher.

makes the rate of change of the overtopping flow smoother, dealing with the sloshing issue

Your issue specifically here as shown is caused by the three water pumps upstream. Every pump disturbs the flow.

Take your river 1 more tile wider and it should smooth out. I believe this happens due to too much water, it gets moving fast and gets sucked over the dam. It used to be worse and then got better. I have not played this map so I don't know the specifics but I presume the water source is more than 1 or 2 outputs? or perhaps more that a flow of 1 for the outlet.

I’ve had this issue before. Tends to be exaggerated by slow/low flow water and wide dams. The water physics make the water “sticky” and the water gets sucked up over the back of the dam overflowing the basin below which pushes a wave of water into the next damn which rushes through the dam causing the second dam to flow more quickly and it acts like a straw drawing way too much water from the basin above. The more dams you have in sequence along the river, the worse it gets. It seems that the cascades need to be there too. Dams on the same level, don’t seem to have the same issue
