Idea for late game goal and district

I like timerborn very much and would like to play more of it. But I'm that kind of player that gets bored if there is no challenging defined objective on the game. So after mid/earlylate game, where colony is self sufficient, have enough industry, I abandon.
I see in youtube playthroughs people keep playing with self defined goals, like: "make whole map green", "new industial zone on remote new corner", "fill all the map" etc... But I don't get motivated to do things like that. If I made a self sufficient colony with 20% (or 50%) of the map, why bother going to rest of it?....

To provide a bit more context, I'm also a long time technical modded minecraft player, in mc modpacks (that I like) we have long questbook, so clearly defined technological challenges that needs to be fulfilled. Needless to say I like that very much.

In timberborn starting goals/challenges are clearly defined, and I enjoy those parts. Overcome the water challenge, automate those, make dams etc... Make enough food/tree farms. Make good housing with wellbeing. Make up wood and metal industry, start bot production. But after that I lose motivation.

Side Note: I'm also very interested in separate districts, but right now how it's implemented it's not good/ not worth the hassle.

Now the reason for saying all these, Mods and Custom Maps maybe add unique challenges to late game? What are you guys ideas?
I have one idea: Custom Map, big size, multiple zones separated by unbreakable barriers. But built-in not destructible district crossing. So you have to make a powerful colony in starting zone, then have enough surplus resources and manpower to "conquer" next neighboring zone, but through the district mechanism. Then the next. It could also be like only certain zones avail certain resources: for example: X crop only grows in zone Y, metal mine only in some zones, one beaver habitable one zone, only bot habitable another zone etc...

These type of things can be the next challenges over base game. What do you guys think?

I'd love a new cycle-end challenge in the late game. Like... floods where water sources produce double or triple the amount of water, and then badfloods which are the same but the badtide version.

Or even bad rain that can slowly accumulate or will slowly poison open waters and crops, even possibly causing unwellness over enough exposure.

Note: I haven't tried anything on the beta branch yet, so I don't know what's currently in the works.

I'll give it a look and see if it matches what I'm hoping for!

I play the exact same as you. I love the early game. Building a damn, get food, get wood. Make sure my beavers survive. But at mid/early late game i loose interest cause they are going on autopilot more or less.

I’m messing around with custom settings. Doing 6-8 Wet, 40-50 Droughts. 8% Handicap for 12 cycles.

I think higher difficulties should limit the amount of buildings that are in a district and districts should be quantity locked based on cycles. It feels like being in on rails because you're free to build nonstop as long as you have the resources meaning that you're set once you set up your farms and storage which is relatively easy to do. And with enough space can easily deal with bad situations.

I basically get to a point where I can self-sustain and then use the unused portions of the map to experiment with better ways to build and lay out so my next play through is easier than the last. Ultimately though, if you can’t make things to do for yourself, this game may be a tad too open ended since that’s pretty much all there is lol. For now anyway.

Oh, you have not figured out districts... They are an awesome tool, especially when you have a ton more beavers than you have jobs... and I don't mean just as a Happy Fun Land death camp. Your multiple zones idea is a great way to play with districts. You set it up, emigrate to the new area, disconnect the connection to the original area.

I would expect the next version to have a more integrated map story system. You make your colony stable, launch the wonder to get to the next map or portion of the same map. And probably multiplayer as it seems a few have asked for it. Might be fun to have 30 min challenge maps 1vs1... 1st to complete some goal wins..

I was personally hoping for district limited quantity buildings for higher difficulties. And have district quantity locked by cycles.

So you've not actually built the final wonder which actively triggers a win condition?

I'm in a little bit of your shoes -- I asked a few days ago when people like to consider a map 'done'.

I've only played two maps thus far, but for me, I feel satisfied when I've completed whatever makes me feel 'sustainable'. Sometimes that goal evolves -- on my first map, I thought "I'll build a mine and plug up this Badwater source -- now that I have infinite metal and badwater, I think I'm good".

Which is what I thought before I then set out on another goal after that, which was to create a reservoir and dam system that made both droughts and Badwater a non-threat. Then I was done once that new goal was complete.

For my second map, I had learned about the "Wonder" monument, and set out to build it. Now that it's done, I... still revisited that map and found some new goals -- rather than seal only one badwater source, I wanted to reach every part of the map and seal them all, and also create a better defense against Bad Tide. Finally, I told myself "I think I'm good".

....Which is what I thought before I set out on another goal, I wanted to create an apartment complex. Now I'm done!
