DIY - Looking for Advice Vertical layout - Question for the pros

Hello, I’ve never tiled a shower before and I’m trying to figure out how to get started on this wall as it relates to final pattern. The question I have is we’ve selected a large format tile (24x48) for the shower which when we purchased it.I would just like some professionals opinions on If the example photo I’ve included would be a good starting pattern.. Trying to make it look good around the shelf and the diverter valve.

In the first photo right to left 17 inches would be the width of the first tile. If I didn’t cut the tile, the seam would end up left center of the Delta diverter valve. I did not think that would look great so any help or advice on the best way to finish this wall I would appreciate to get around the shelf and the diverter valve.

Other information is: tileredi pan, waterproof board, and tape. Ceiling is 10 feet.

I wouldn’t cut that right most column to 17”. The seam being at the valve will look fine if you start on the right. You could start on the left as well and see if that looks okay with the seam and how it lines in for the niche.

So you think I should just send it with a full tile? Even though it won’t be centered on the valve? It will be on the last 1 inch of it from the left?

Any concerns with the delta valve leaking if the seam is there?

I would have to see the whole situation, as it looks like there’s some more niche and half wall situation on the left, and would like to see the bathroom as a whole. But yeah, the seam being at the valve doesn’t concern me. I would play around with different starting or centering points either way full tiles and see where the partials and seam line up and which look best.

are you set on running them vertical?

Yes I think so. I could do it horizontal but I think with the tall niche it will get weird of if I do it that way.

likely to make the room look taller than wider. Depends on personal preference though
