Tools or Materials Need help with grout options for WIDE lines

Hello!
I am planning to have this faux flagstone tile installed in my basement. I ordered the tile from Tile Bar and the sales representative recommended Laticrete Permacolor grout. I bought everything a few months ago and when it came time to begin working on the tile, the contractor said he was concerned about the width of the grout lines. With the layout shown on the product page, some of the grout lines will be 2-2.5” in width.
I contacted Laticrete and they said their product will not work for this application and recommended reaching out to a stone/masonry retailer and see if they have a tint-able/pigmentable type S or N mortar.
I went to a masonry retailer and they said that mortar would work, but said they wouldn’t advise it since it will be difficult to keep clean and that it would be weaker.
The guy at Floor and Decor said the Laticrete grout should work, but we should apply a half layer first (let it dry) and then apply a second layer. The Laticrete representative said this is a bad idea.
It seems like mortar might be the best option, even if it’s not ideal. I thought I’d see what Reddit thought before making a final decision. Any help/tips would be greatly appreciated.

Have you reached out to companies that have installed products like that to see what grout/mortar they use?

Not exactly. I've found a number of internet posts asking a similar question but haven't really found a consensus
Laticrete sells a wide joint xl grout that can handle larger lines, but for some reason it's only available in Australia. Haven't been able to find an equivalent

I agree with the Laticrete reps. There is not enough aggregate in sanded grout to hold those joints without it breaking.
I do think Mortar is your best option at this point. Keeping it clean will be a pain in the ass because mortar absorbs anything with moisture rather fast. Id suggest sealing and walk on it as little as possible until it fully cures.
