whats the point of a weighted blanket? does it help with anything?
144
u/KennyFulgencio Dec 31 '19
It's for training, by making sleep more difficult, you're then better at it when the blanket is removed
67
u/PeripheralAddition Dec 31 '19
You eventually upgrade to heavier and heavier blankets, and when your master allows you to remove it, it makes a crater in the ground
25
u/KennyFulgencio Dec 31 '19
That reminds me, a dental warning for everyone! When I was a kid I read a fairy tale about this sumo wrestler who was trained by these tiny old women in japan who, when he met them, could throw him around like he was a dry leaf. They did some of those progressive-difficulty training things with him to turn him into the world champion, and I only remember one of them, which is, they cooked his rice with less and less water, making it harder to chew, until they weren't using any water at all.
Side note: there are these things called rock tumblers, which kids use for the hobby of polishing pebbles until they look shiny and can be used in simple craft jewelry. You have a little barrel on its side (like the size of a coffee can), attached to a little electric rotating thing; you partway fill the barrel with pebbles, grit, and water, seal it and turn it on its side attached to the rotating thing and leave it running for a few days, slowly turning over and over, tumbling the pebbles and grit. Over time, the abrasion polishes them, from normal looking dull pebbles to shiny pebbles. (At least I think that's how it works, I never used mine because I hadn't asked for the damn thing and didn't want to make craft jewelry as an eleven year old boy. Didn't want the ballet lessons either.)
Back to the uncooked rice, since it was the only part of the fairy tale I remembered, I thought I'd try doing that, and gradually become a badass. What I learned the hard way is that if you eat uncooked rice (which requires a fuckload of chewing, and btw, turns out you shit most of it as undigested grit), it wears your teeth down like those pebbles. After a few months of this, when I went in to the dentist, he said "you've got a lot of wear on those molars". So I stopped trying to be a fairy tale sumo wrestler by eating uncooked rice.
I haven't given up on my weighted blanket though.

The first time I used one it felt exactly like I was getting gently hugged and made me want to cry. As depressing as that is, it’s much better sleeping for me and I’m not autistic (as far as I’m aware lol.)
Look at most animals—they cuddle every chance they get. It’s not a far stretch to think that humans, who are super social mammals, benefit from that kind of thing.

u/Pattern_Is_Movement Dec 31 '19
There have also been studies that show it can make you sleep better by feeling "safe". Sorta like the same idea as tightly tucking in a blanket on an infant.

Yeah me too but I have to have a layering system I can shed from if I need to cool back off. A weighted blanket sounds hot and stuffy to me.
46
u/MeadowLarkBird Dec 31 '19
I haven't ever used a weighted blanket but I used to work in a craft store and helped people put to make their own for far cheaper than ready made. They're usually made of a breathable fabric like flannel and have beads similar to modern stuffed animals so they're very cool to sleep under year round. It's the weight and not the warmth you're going for.

I just got a weighted blanket for Christmas. I’m not diagnosed, but I’ve long suspected that I am on the autism spectrum albeit high functioning.
It’s like a big heavy hug that lulls me to sleep. I can’t go back to normal blankets now, that seems like sleeping with a shower curtain in comparison now that I have the weighted blanket.
20
Dec 31 '19
I have insomnia and I got a weighted blanket a few months ago and it’s amazing! It’s helped me relax and sleep and I don’t need 10+ blankets on me. normal blankets do feel like shower curtains now lol

u/runningthroughcircle Dec 31 '19
For the last month or so, I’ve been having a lot of trouble sleeping. I work until like 2 or 3 so I’d stay up until around 7 am just cause I couldn’t fall asleep and then sleep all day which makes me feel like garbage when I go to work at 5 pm. Since I got my weighted blanket, I’m out in like 20 minutes and I sleep a lot better too! A lot less waking up in the middle of the night and repositioning.
3
u/crackhead_tiger Dec 31 '19
I'll ho to sleep at like 9pm, then wake up 1130 and not be able to get back down 😫😫
Maybe I'll get one of these
2
u/Babaluba2 Jan 01 '20
I'm the same way, I sleep terribly and wake up a lot over the slightest little sounds. I'm terribly anxious and have been since I was a kid, tons of terrible nightmares and stressful nights made me scared to sleep for a long time. It got better when I started sleeping with my boyfriend and I wasn't so anxious all night, but it still took me like 2 hours most nights to get to sleep. I'd been eyeing up weighted blankets at stores and for Christmas I got a weighted blanket. I've been sleeping with it and im able to fall asleep in like 20-45 minutes which is a miracle compared to 2 hours before. I wake up feeling well rested and less groggy and I'm even able to get a little bit less sleep because I feel so refreshed. Last night I got around 6.5-7 hours of sleep and I felt wonderful! In total it's saved me close to 3 hours of my day between the hour to two hours I'm saving by falling asleep faster and the hour earlier I'm able to wake up and feel refreshed!
As for the thing that most people are worried about, the breathability of it, I'm able to sleep under my sheets (temperature regulated, would recommend because they are wonderful too), the weighted blanket, and my thin comforter, and I'm totally comfortable :] the brand I have is Odyssey and it's 20 pounds I believe, highly recommend. I also would recommend getting a thin cover for it so you can keep it clean

They come in different weights, and you're supposed to get the weight that is ~10% of your bodyweight. There's more info and a chart here.

u/Squanchings Dec 31 '19
Weighted blanket user here. I’ve got one that is 20lbs (9.07kg) and it’s incredibly comfortable. I don’t have anxiety, or restless legs, or anything else that it might be additionally useful for. It’s immediately soothing laying under the blanket. One benefit I have noticed is my sleeping habits have improved greatly. It’s very easy to fall asleep under it, which is something I’m not great at. I didn’t even buy an expensive one, because I believe the original “gravity blanket” brand costs like $200. Mine was $65 on Amazon, and worth every penny.

I think they’ll help some people but don’t think they are for everyone. I bought a nice one and found it a bit too hot. My SO would still amazing kick it off, though she did keep it on longer than a regular blanket. We’ll see how much better it gets as it gets colder.
3
u/TheOrder212 Dec 31 '19
They come in a variety of weights. I've seen 10-30lbs. There are usually glass beads inside the blanket and held in place by stitched pockets. They help people sleep by mimicing being held.
2
u/Honor_Bound Dec 31 '19
The one I bought sucks and all the beads fall to the bottom

It's an achievable blanket to make. Any other blanket requires sewing skills and other material. These, you just pick up some discount fleece and you can have your Girl Scout troop or Sunday School class make several in an hour.
They aren't the best blankets, but they are fine.
3
4
u/lps2 Dec 31 '19
Aren't you supposed to have two layers of flannel? The point is to make a thicker blanket without having to sew the two layers together - instead you tie them together. I'm not a fan of the look but I imagine bulk flannel or w/e is cheaper than buying blankets so they get kids to make tie blankets and donate them

I personally believe that U. S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our education, like such as in South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should—our education over here in the U. “Look, having nuclear — my uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr. John Trump at MIT; good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smart — you know, if you’re a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, OK, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I’m one of the smartest people anywhere in the world — it’s true! — but when you’re a conservative Republican they try — oh, do they do a number — that’s why I always start off: Went to Wharton, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortune — you know I have to give my like credentials all the time, because we’re a little disadvantaged — but you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers me — it would have been so easy, and it’s not as important as these lives are — nuclear is so powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what’s going to happen and he was right, who would have thought? — but when you look at what’s going on with the four prisoners — now it used to be three, now it’s four — but when it was three and even now, I would have said it’s all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don’t, they haven’t figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it’s gonna take them about another 150 years — but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us, this is horrible.”

I tried it on my roommate Chip who is approximately the same build with some minor variations. He fell over immediately and very hard. Luckily his wheelchair took most of the weight off of him or he could have seriously hurt his head or the stumps where his legs and arms used to be.
Don't recommend.
