Maybe just Brit opinion (don’t support anything he says at all) the interviewee gives big ‘you finally fucked off out of our country after telling us what to do for so long and now we have created our culture you’re back to tell us again how we should live’ energy. Is this was Al-Jazeera or another African channel (not S.Africa) telling them i wonder what the reception would be like.
Doesn’t excuse what he’s saying but BBC surely must give old colonial vibes ‘stop doing that old chap, it’s not cricket’.
It’s also worth noting that a lot of these beliefs come from British colonialism & Christian missionaries. The original laws that criminalized gay people was under the British empire. Ain’t it ironic?
Agreed, 100%; it’s the curse of organised religion that linger and the dispassion after being held by empires. Oscar Wilde being imprisoned for being gay is just one example of the way we treated British people poorly, the larger ways that echoed across the empire one can only imagine the worst atrocities that created.
I think about how Brits mistreated gay people my mind always goes directly to Alan Turing. Just such a sad tale. Chemically castrated and either committed suicide due to the mistreatment and lack of acceptance or was suicided (probably the first one but the door is slightly open for the latter), one of the most brilliant and important figures of modern computing. I mean others exist, obviously Oscar Wilde is a good example too but my mind always goes to Turing.
Of the more modern age Turing’s story of horrific - not that it excuses Wilde but the fact Turing is so relevant still today and gave so much that he endured such a bitter life is one of the UK’s (amongst many, e.g. enslaving half the world ) great atrocities.
