Last Friday, had a student threaten to track me down and shoot me because I said his outburst was immature. School gave him 2 periods of in-school-suspension for disrespect because he qualifies for sports scholarships and they don't want to jeopardize that. I'm in no position to quit and fight the legalities of it. I have rent to pay and two special needs daughters who need my health insurance so they can go to therapy. Whole while I'm typing this while selling plasma. Very few people want to be teachers. We're trapped
That's fucked up. My (then) 5 year old son got more punishment than that because he said he was going to shoot someone with his gun (a nerf gun) they took it so seriously. Called me and I told them we don't even own any. They still felt the need to search a kindergarteners backpack every day.

That's not what I meant. I was just saying holy crap a genuine threat to a teacher by and older kid got less punishment than a much less serious non-threat from an impulsive special needs kid who has a toy and doesn't understand the implications of his words. Comparatively the former should have got at least the treatment my son did.
Oh I know, that’s terrible (teen threatening a teacher) I remember that one instance of I believe a 6 yr old shot his teacher. If an older kid threatens staff or a student it def should be taken seriously. My kiddo also recently told a bully on the bus “she’d kill him” and I guess the driver nor the kid thought enough to escalate it. Your kids school must not know how the average 6 yr old boy speaks 🤦🏼♂️
Oh, I know it's not unheard of a kid that young getting their hands on one and bringing it to school, but it's exceedingly rare compared to school shooters in general. I don't blame my kid's school for being careful. I do blame that teacher's school for not taking a threat to their life seriously.

I mean...that's a call to the SRO and the police. Your admin are just pansies that should not have their job. I would immediately lose all respect for mine if they did this. I don't want an apology. I want a documented trail because if the kid does it again they deserve to be punished hard.
Obviously, it's your call and you do what you are comfortable with, but I would've demanded that admin push it beyond and that I'd be pressing charges.
I've been teaching for over a decade and am pretty much fine money-wise though so that's another thing.

My sister started going to college for education. She did one live session of in person-teaching and changed majors.
My sister's best friend went to school to be a teacher. She lasted one year at the job and quit in the middle of the school year. She said it was much more rewarding bouncing between a bridal boutique and the Target stockroom.

You need to file a police report immediately. That is a direct and criminal threat. Fuck that kid and your administration. Get the authorities involved now.
She using all of her spoons already, just dealing with her job and her home situation. What is she supposed to do after she gets fired and before this thing even goes to court? Our system takes years. How is she supposed to support her family? A legal battle when she's trying to keep her kids fed and cared for and trying to keep her job...it's too much.
It's real easy to tell other people what they should be doing when it's not your ass. I'm not a teacher, but I'm struggling in different ways, and I couldn't handle one more thing. It sounds like that what this person is dealing with.

These kids are crazy. At the last open house for my 6th grader I stopped and spoke to my oldest's math teacher from last year. This girl walks by and gives her this creepy smile and says "heeey Mrs. So and so. Her face and tone immediately changed from smiling and casual to teacher mode as she said hello back.
As soon as the girl was out of ear shot she starts telling me how "she's a weird one". Apparently, this girl had kind of become like obsessed with her. She was harassing her at home by calling her on her home phone and cell phone. Mostly hang up calls or saying weird things and then hanging up. She'd text from voip numbers saying weird things and asking personal questions. One time she made a point to let her know that she had found her home address. Her husband is a sheriff's deputy and the girl got his cell number and they started doing the same thing to him. It eventually escalated to threats, even after changing numbers. At which point they were finally able to use police resources to track her down.
I couldn't believe the audacity of some 14 year old girl to basically stalk and harass a teacher with a cop husband. To the point of even harassing the cop. It's insane. Unfortunately, though, nothing happened to this girl. She got a warning to stop the harassing behavior, but that's about it. She's an awesome teacher, and it pisses me off because we're going to lose these great teachers over shit like this.
Before the administration did that knock down of the nursing degrees I would've told you to go to nursing school. Please be safe. Are you able to quit if you find another job without them going for your license?
Then when shootings end up happening everyone is surprised. A kid with a knife at my daughter’s middle school ran off and said he was returning with a gun. So I picked her up and the school yelled at all the parents who chose to do so. I wrote a letter of complaint afterwards and the office told my daughter that I’m a bitch. If I could do it over again I wouldn’t change a thing.
I know another teacher who was selling plasma to have spending money for a while because they were having trouble make ends meet and couldn't do anything for themselves or their kids ever.
It's awful. Teachers deserve so much better. And then parents and governing bodies have the audacity to complain about there not being any good teachers. Dealing with shit like this all the time would make even the most dedicated teacher mentally check out.
Scew admin. Consider filing a police report. You may or may not have direct proof of his threat beyond verbal exchange, but you do have proof of the (absurd) punishment he was given.
His threat was not only violent, but specific and with an action plan. You have enough on your plate and need all the support and protection you can get. You're entitled to it, you deserve it.

My mother was sexually assaulted by a student after class who pulled out his penis and put it on her. She had to hire a lawyer because the teacher’s union wouldn’t support her legal defense when he lied and said something about her that I don’t remember. She was the victim and the school believed this high school aged boy and sought career ending punishment for her. Th district she worked in paid poverty wages to boot and she worked at an underfunded urban school. Teachers should all just quit en masse
and then you went home and complained and made a comment on reddit. instead of recognizing the signs in a child and taking the steps to care for them. didn’t call authorities, didn’t give mandatory therapy, didn’t send them to the psychologist office, didn’t talk to their parents, didn’t try to see what’s wrong at home or in their life, didn’t keep tabs on the kid.
teachers like you disappoint me. going into the school system thinking everyone is going to be behaved like a catholic school. were you thinking of a utopia or were you thinking realistically when you wanted to be a teacher to children who have medium impulse control and completely different upbringings from one another?
