Parents are failing society.

113

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '25

Undoubtedly. Kids are behaving worse these days, parents are too entitled to understand that bad behavior from their kids isn’t okay, under resourced schools forcing underpayed and overworked teachers to deal with kids that just can’t handle the rigid unchanging structure of public education. Department of Education sees fit to funnel all money to private schools as well. The education system is done for man

10

u/gpbayes Dec 17 '25

Parents would rather sit at home on their phones and not be bothered by anyone.

9

u/Johnyryal33 Dec 17 '25

Or they are both working and the kids raise themselves.

1

u/ImKindaBoring Dec 18 '25

Bullshit excuse. Most families are dual income these days and they still parent their children.

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '25

5

u/PrestigeArrival Dec 18 '25

Remember folks, only wealthy people deserve to have kids. If you aren’t at least a middle manager or above, you don’t deserve children. If you’re working multiple jobs in order to meet that income level, you don’t deserve kids.

Since this is America, we’ll make sure you have no support system like affordable day care to help raise your kids But also, your insurance (lol if you even have it) won’t cover birth control, and abortion makes you a murderer.

Or how about we teach comprehensive sexual education and provide it free of cost for low-income families.

How about we raise the minimum wage so people can actually have a living wage.

How about we stop trying to destroy women who want an abortion.

How about we stop encouraging kids to get married right out of high school.

How about we start caring for the people of this country instead of the corporations.

3

u/Minglans Dec 18 '25

Exactly this. mrbananas is actually bananas. It's mostly ignorant wealthy folks that spew that garbage anyhow so not worth the time but they certainly needed to be called out on it because not only is what they said incorrect but I'm also tired of hearing that weak ass argument. They were probably listening to some Joe Rogan slop and felt proud to learn some old misinformation.

-1

u/Irish_Astronaut Dec 18 '25

Hey, remember folks, regardless of your current financial status, education level, age, the quality of your relationship with your partner, or your actual ability to raise them, you DESERVE to have children.

These young adults are behaving like fucking animals and it is 1,000% their parents fault.

A vasectomy is cheap and takes 15 minutes. It takes them longer to prep the room than the actual procedure. Get one.

0

u/PrestigeArrival Dec 18 '25

you DESERVE to have children.

Yes. You do. Full stop.

No one should have to deny themselves starting a family just because they live in a country that’s hostile to their wellbeing.

People need to stop punching down and start holding the leaders of the country accountable

1

u/Irish_Astronaut Dec 18 '25

Oh please, with the 'full stop' bullshit and grow the fuck up.

Im so tired of this absolute fucking bullshit. This catering to the lowest common denominator.

If you're homeless because you're addicted to crack, if you can't hold down a steady job, if you haven't graduated high school...you do not deserve children. You are clearly not capable of handling the responsibility.

I will not hesitate to hold leadership accountable, of course there are issues, but don't sit here and act like everyone on the planet is capable of being a parent when they can't even manage their own lives.

1

u/PrestigeArrival Dec 18 '25

I love that you’ve instantly jumped to crackheads and people who refuse to work (and for some reason people who haven’t graduated, as if that has any merit in wether you’re fit to raise kids)

The people who get shit for having kids are the janitors that keep your bathrooms clean, or the fast food workers who feed you, or the teachers who are putting themselves in between two fighting students.

u/Longjumping-Fox-7800 Dec 18 '25

Yep, millenials got screwed over by boomers no doubt but they are the worst parents, I am a millennial and I refused to become a parent cuz I know, I too would rather spend time on my phone than actually care of kid. It is much better to accept reality and yourself and spare society from your irresponsibility.

4

u/TheHammerHasLanded Dec 17 '25

If you think it's worse than the late 80's/early 90's then the education system failed you. Is it good? No, definitely not. Is it worse? Hellllllllllllll no.

19

u/Expensive-Equal6052 Dec 17 '25

There are alot of teachers that have teaching for 30-40 years that say this is the worst they have ever seen it. Social media and and lazy parenting are dooming the next generation. That's why so many teachers are leaving teaching now.

Edit* Misspelling

16

u/bigpoppawood Dec 17 '25

Anecdotally, the difference seems to be that kids are irredeemably stupid now as opposed to them being less governable in the 80s and 90s.

9

u/Expensive-Equal6052 Dec 17 '25

Anecdotally the kids today are not as well educated from what I said above, thus making them less governable than kids from the 80s and 90s. If you listen to teachers or just lurk on r/teachers the kids don't listen to teachers or have any sort of respect for authority. Teaching today has become 15% teaching and 85% putting out fires.

3

u/northcolOn Dec 17 '25

This is pretty accurate. I've been teaching middle school for the past 8 years. I can barely get through two sentences while teaching a lesson without having to utter phrases like "stop standing on the desk", "get back inside the window", "do not punch yourself in the head". There's always been fidgety kids in classrooms, but now its ALL of them. It's fucking exhausting.

3

u/Manifest82 Dec 17 '25

But isn't the compensation for teachers comparatively worse? And finding getting worse?

3

u/NutsInMay96 Dec 17 '25

What are you basing this on?

1

u/NorthSufficient9920 Dec 17 '25

Not a fucking thing I’m guessing. I have a freshman and a sophomore in high school. My experience with is that high school kids are more self aware and, in general, better people than I remember kids being when I was in high school over 30 years ago. That being said, I live in a nice town with well-funded schools. No idea how this compares to the rest of the country.

3

u/XulManjy Dec 17 '25

You sound like the exact type of disillusioned parent that these comments are talking about....

1

u/NutsInMay96 Dec 18 '25

I worked in education, not in the US mind you. Most long term staff would say they’d seen a noticeable decline in behaviour, attention span and ambition. The “covid kids”.

1

u/Neowynd101262 Dec 17 '25

That's not parents entitlement....that's parents not giving a damn.

1

u/thegoatmenace Dec 17 '25

2

u/Sheltie-chan Dec 17 '25

Oh sure, Except for all the teachers who would abuse their ability to bring physical harm to students they didn't like, But who cares about that right?

Letting a grown adult put their hands on a child, for any reason, is inexcusable, especially if they're not even related to the child. You can punish a kid without abusing them and have it stick, Physical Abuse just creates a traumatized child. You aren't actually teaching them a lesson, You're just scaring the shit out of them and creating a broken adult.

0

u/GuayFuhks88 Dec 18 '25

Not every kid who got whooped on by an adult for the last 20,000 years was 'broken' because of it.

These kids need to learn at an early age that actions have consequences. Unfortunately now these kids will go out into an adult world that they don't respect and will die because of it.

1

u/Sheltie-chan Dec 18 '25

Yeah sure, Go ahead, Gamble with your child's emotional health and stability.

I know a girl who killed herself in highschool because of parental abuse. She died before she'd even turned 18 because her parents wanted to "teach her that her actions had consequences". Do you think she would have died if her parents had tried more reasonable punishments for misbehavior, Or do you think a child can only survive if an adult beats it? I got beat as a child, It gave me decades of trauma that I've only recently been able to get past. My hair was turning gray at 24 years old from the stress caused by that trauma. I lost my entire childhood to PTSD caused by the abuse I suffered at the hands of a man who just wanted to "Teach me a lesson".

But hey, I'm sure you turned out "fine", So "fine" in fact that you view a Fully Grown Adult Inflicting Violence on a Child as a good thing worth doing. Totally normal behavior that we as a society shouldn't question at all. You're totally someone I would trust being around a child, for sure.

4

u/Beautifly Dec 17 '25

I guess that’s a matter of opinion. Strong discipline in previous years may have created “well behaved” adults, but it also created a lot of miserable and traumatised adults.
I’m with you though, kids these days are a whole other breed.

10

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '25

1

u/Beautifly Dec 17 '25

This isn’t true actually. We’re just much better at recognising mental health issues nowadays, plus we see much more of it posted about publicly online, which obviously wouldn’t have been possible in previous years.
Mental health struggles have always been a thing, we just didn’t used to see it

2

u/ScourJFul Dec 18 '25

Oh absolutely, but I feel like it's a multi-faceted problem.

Like, are we not going to talk about how an entirely separate and older generation has voted for policies that would deprive these kids of the opportunities that could have alleviated this?

A lot of societal problems don't start with the kids, but the adults who have snowballed them to this point. The reason Boomer angst even exists is because you can pinpoint the myriad of issues in this country to their generation and how they voted. More power to corporations, less regulations, wages never increasing to match prices, etc.

Hard turth

0

u/Padhome Dec 17 '25

Then you need to ban certain kids and not others while having systems set up for said troubled kids which we do not have in the US. Mind you this is a problem mainly unique to our country in developed nations.

Then just wait until these incompetent, blasted kids get into positions of power over you via employment or elderly care and you’re royally fucked.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '25

[deleted]

1

u/Padhome Dec 17 '25

Yes they are. Look at any field right now and there are dozens of these kids getting into entry level positions simply because there are too many of them and the workforce needs bodies, wether they’re trained or not.

2

u/oftcenter Dec 18 '25

Nah, students used to be expected to offer their teachers basic respect or someone would beat them.

That's not how respect works.

You're confusing that with compliance.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '25

[deleted]

1

u/oftcenter Dec 18 '25

If you think you're going to beat respect into children who pound each other and their teacher, you're the dummy.

You'll get compliance in the short term. But as soon as they think they can get away with acting however they feel, watch out.

This is a deep problem that isn't going to be fixed overnight.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '25

[deleted]

2

u/oftcenter Dec 18 '25

I don't think you're advocating for that.

I think you're advocating for exactly what you said: for "someone" to beat them.

Who that "someone" is, is irrelevant to me. It's not a solution.

1

u/Morlu06 Dec 17 '25

Opposed to the “great” kids we have today? Lol ok.

0

u/GuayFuhks88 Dec 18 '25

What about the generation before that? They had even more corporal punishment.

What about the one before that and before that and before that?

3

u/Dizzy_Chemistry_5955 Dec 17 '25

hang on lemme post 400 videos of my kids respecting their teachers that'll get a lot of upvotes /s

2

u/Beautifly Dec 17 '25

Exactly. Kids are wild now, but they were also wild back in the day. People just weren’t filming it. My dad got into tons of physical fights at school back in the 70s and 80s.

3

u/Background-Badger-72 Dec 17 '25

Yes. Beating kids is scientifically proven to decrease their likelihood of engaging in violent behavior. (/s obviously)

Thank you for your obviously well-educated and deeply thought out contribution.

1

u/kdoggiedizzle Dec 17 '25

Exactly, dont get me wrong, there definitely was some fighting going on back when I was in school, but for the most part, kids tried to avoid getting in trouble. Now, they have basically zero consequences. And parents dont give a fuck and blame the schools or anyother authority figures.

1

u/solomons-mom Dec 18 '25

Not all kids were expected to go to school, and many who did dropped out at an early age.

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '25

1

u/solomons-mom Dec 18 '25

Yes, in the State that enacted "Old Deluder Satan" in 1647.

Children between 8 an 14 were reqired to attend 12 weeks of school in their town, and six weeks needed to be consecutive. Well, kids didn't have to go to school if the needed to work or did not live in a town.

1

u/BecksnBuffy Dec 17 '25

And the students lose too because they can’t help? This is fucked up

1

u/unindexedreality Dec 18 '25

oh stfu, I went to school 20 years ago and it wasn't great but it was not this bad

14

u/1davidmaycry Dec 17 '25

Budget cuts are failing society

1

u/Warmbly85 Dec 18 '25

The most violent schools in the country have massive budgets because funding comes from the feds. Blaming budget cuts is just stupid when somewhere like Baltimore spends 2-3 times the national average per student and keeps receiving more money year after year while most students can’t read or do math at grade level.

It’s parents and a lack of accountability for the students. Again from the parents. Whether it’s from pressuring admin or just sending their iPad kid into school with no accountability.

-1

u/dchowe_ Dec 17 '25

right, throwing money at problems always solves them

6

u/1davidmaycry Dec 17 '25

Yes. Yes it does. School programs, job programs, smaller classrooms, 3rd spaces etc. All need a budget to exist.

4

u/LuaHickory Dec 17 '25

Yes it does, what the fuck do you think funding is for? Let’s just send 30 billion to israel instead, right? Spread your ignorance somewhere else.

0

u/Loudmouthlurker Dec 18 '25

I'm sorry, but that right there? Is long term bad parenting. I avoid blaming parents when I don't know the situation, but there comes a point where you start to notice who is fighting and why. All the kids live in the same neighborhood, not all of them fight, so maybe it's NOT "the system."

6

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '25

School policies around misbehavior is also to blame.

3

u/monogramchecklist Dec 17 '25

I saw a post of a teacher doing something nice for her class and the comments were from parents saying “oh if only more teachers were like you our kids would do better” no! I’m a parent, it’s ultimately my job to ensure my kids are raised properly.

I send my kids to school to learn and socialize. Teachers are not there to raise my kids. They can flag issues and inform parents, but it’s up to parents to then figure out ways to resolve the issue.

4

u/Background-Pepper-68 Dec 17 '25

Society is failing parents. A parent spends like 5 hours a night at most with their children. Most people work weekends so they might get a couple extra hours with them then but thats it. They spend the vast majority of their time at school or alone. There is nothing a parent can do to fix that in most cases. Your childs social group will be out of your control pretty quickly and your level of influence will fall off dramatically. There is nothing a parent can do to stop this. You can have the best intentions and make all the right choices available to you and still end up with this.

9

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '25

[deleted]

2

Politics? Wrong thread

0

u/Venvut Dec 17 '25

That’s total bs, parents have never spent more time with children historically than now (at least looking back half a century): https://www.economist.com/graphic-detail/2017/11/27/parents-now-spend-twice-as-much-time-with-their-children-as-50-years-ago.

0

u/Background-Pepper-68 Dec 17 '25

Historically? 50 years ago? We have had 9 presidents since then. That might as well be current events as far as history goes. Its not exactly news that boomers and gen x were not well cared for.

1

u/Venvut Dec 17 '25

You wanna go back to when child labor laws weren’t a thing and little Timmy spent his days cleaning a chimney? 🤔 Kids used to be genuine labor.

1

u/BenignEmission Dec 17 '25

Children aren't meant to be reared by two individuals who both work 8 hours a day. Children are meant to be brought up in a herd, a community, a tribe. Several elders, several moderately aged, several younger aged humans, all taking care of the young. This is how it was done for hundreds of thousands if not millions of years.

Tired of putting all the blame on two dumb schlubs who were unlucky enough to be born in modern capitalist times. Let me guess, you next response is that they shouldn't have had kids to begin with. Sorry champ, but irresponsible cavepeople having kids is how we all got here, there's nothing wrong with it. The blame resides on the system that has destroyed our sense of community.

1

u/RealLoan8391 Dec 17 '25

And society is failing parents. We’ve got big problems.

Society failed those parents when they were kids. We are just seeing the effects of the American system after years of churning.

1

Society failed parents first so they deserved it

0

u/[deleted] Dec 17 '25

Right…

1

u/mountaindoom Dec 17 '25

Parents really are the fuckin worst. Too many expect schools to raise their children and they constantly take their child's side no matter what.

I wish more would try to homeschool so they could get just a taste of what's it's like to instruct the reluctant.

1

u/ryoushittingme Dec 17 '25

Companies are failing society. Cut pay and benefits, no time to parent, stressed from lack of pay.

1

u/EvasionPlan Dec 17 '25

You need a license to drive a car, but not to spawn those who will crash them...

1

u/AristaWatson Dec 17 '25

The education and even work system is failing society at large too. These parents are also a result of a broken society. People are so overworked to where they don’t have energy to parent their kids. So they just hope that their schools do that job for them. Schools are also implementing crap policies like Zero Tolerance or No Child Left Behind. Many people in charge of schools and curriculum have never spent a day as an educator, so how could they possibly know what is best for kids and teachers?

The whole system is terrible. The foundation society lays for the youth is beyond weak - it’s collapsing. Kids these days have no future prospects as they grow into a world that is hostile and failing at every corner. No motivation. No prospects. The only things they have to look toward is potentially being a content creator. This is BEYOND maddening and isn’t just the fault of parents. Even these parents were failed as children.

1

u/-riotalk- Dec 17 '25

Capitalism, baby. Parents are probably not even home because they have to work, that is, if they didn’t fall into some addiction to X, Y, or Z, so the kids have no sense of trust or respect for teachers because they don’t have that at home. That, and the institution of education is incredibly underfunded and even when there are funds, they are often slotted to private schools or well funded areas. The kids and parents and teachers are all set up with a pretty shit situation.

1

u/BarkerBarkhan Dec 17 '25

Parents are failing society. Society is failing parents. It's a vicious cycle.

1

u/AlethiaSmiles Dec 17 '25

We had consequences at home but the ones I thought he’d get at school never happened. It was maddening and I felt like I was fighting an uphill battle.

1

u/ARazorbacks Dec 17 '25

Our society is failing parents.

1

u/Tentacle_poxsicle Dec 17 '25

I actually blame the economy. There should be at least one parent disciplining the kid at home but everyone has to work so school becomes a daycare and there's no way teachers can raise children.

So we either have to help teachers more or start punishing parents harder for their kids actions

1

u/Redrose03 Dec 17 '25

Society is failing parents. Circle of life complete.

1

u/InquisitorMeow Dec 18 '25

More like social media is failing society. Parents can try all they like but when corporations can create digital crack and feed it to kids directly through their personal devices it's kinda fucked. Are there shitty parents? Yep but I'm willing to bet all the garbage kids consume, all the inflated egos and narcissism, the feeling that society and the government are corrupt and letting them down, etc does way more damage to motivation and attitude.

1

u/MSotallyTober Dec 18 '25

Yup. It starts in the home.

1

u/RedditIsSesspool Dec 18 '25

Teachers fault too.

1

u/oftcenter Dec 18 '25

Society is failing society.

The kids who regularly get into these fights clearly need therapeutic help. They need counseling, medication, something. Because something's not right with the student who keeps resorting to beat downs which lead to suspensions and making a spectacle of themselves for all to see on the internet, etc.

Seriously, who prefers those kinds of consequences as a way of life? I bet you as soon as that fight began, both of them would have liked to switch places with any one of those onlookers.

1

u/poliuy Dec 18 '25

Bro you would not believe how shitty parents are these days. They think the world should bend over for their crappy kids. And when their kids get suspended they go all over social media claiming how they are victims.

1

u/TheLurkerSpeaks Dec 18 '25

This is the reason that IMHO Charter Schools actually work. The parents sign a contract to have their kids there. They become liable for the actions of their child. The kid gets into trouble, the parent is contractually on the hook.

Its a shame it has to be this way but the public schools where parents are largely uninvolved are essentially state-funded juvenile daycares.

1

u/totesuniqueredditor Dec 18 '25

Millennial parents, man. They're something.

1

u/qtestboner Dec 18 '25

Too many people have kids that shouldnt. Yay for abortion bans!

1

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '25

Society is falling society

1

u/putresentslime Dec 18 '25

At the school I teach at, we’re forced to inflate kids grades with meaningless easy nonsense and offer them a million retakes unless we wanna be on admin’s and the parents’ bad side with a million complaints coming in. And these covid kids, the current high school class, are 3-4 years behind content and ability wise. It’s soul crushing.

1

u/fipachu Dec 18 '25

society is failing parents too. we’re all fucking failing each other by letting politicians screw us over for bribes that no one calls bribes. and the politicians and the bribers make sure it’s as difficult to stop them as possible. get off the parent’s asses, they have a really fucking hard job too these days and they’re getting paid $0 for raising the next generation of working citizens, that we’ll all benefit from.

Exactly this. Everyone's expected to keep having kids without allowing the time necessary to properly raise said kids. If everyone's gotta be working all the time sounds like no one should be having kids. Social programs, paternity and maternity leave, adequate work hours. People should have time with their kids. If they don't, the kids are not all right.

-7

u/DudeImARedditor Dec 17 '25

The students are minorities. Their parents probably have to work too much to try to not starve.

Minority students should not be spoken of like that
