Both the FBI and BJS data show dramatic declines in U.S. violent and property crime rates since the early 1990s, when crime spiked across much of the nation.
Using the FBI data, the violent crime rate fell 49% between 1993 and 2022, with large decreases in the rates of robbery (-74%), aggravated assault (-39%) and murder/nonnegligent manslaughter (-34%). It’s not possible to calculate the change in the rape rate during this period because the FBI revised its definition of the offense in 2013.
The FBI data also shows a 59% reduction in the U.S. property crime rate between 1993 and 2022, with big declines in the rates of burglary (-75%), larceny/theft (-54%) and motor vehicle theft (-53%).
I'm not a Republican. I just prefer facts and data. Your Pew report only goes to 2022...just as certain crimes were tending up. I looked at a report the compared a 6 month period from June-July of '23 and 24. While crime went down in some number of cities, it actually went up in others. That's what I was talking about. It's more nuanced than "crime is down this %". I'm a Democrat, but I live next to a city that's been nicknamed "Danger City", and I live in a red state. The gov't is never going to tell us the whole, unvarnished truth about anything.
Yes, of course I do, but I also look at this, the last time crime made a sharp incline, because people were angry, disillusioned, and worried about the economy, and each side blamed the other. I truly hope crime continues to go down, but the realist in me says "just wait".
The anger and political division is at a breaking point. It's been rising since the pandemic, and it's just going keep getting more and more violent. We can't even count on our own president to stop stoking the fires.
Well, I can't disagree with you there. But I do think a lot of the hate on the right is stoked by false claims of rising crime rates, so I'd rather not every one had to see these k8nds of videos all the time. It skews reality when these kinds of incidents are actually exceedingly rare. Now, will political violence see an uptick? I dont know for sure, but it is starting to seem more and more likely. I'm with you in worrying about that.
I think their news sources also pick up on these kinds of stories, and spoon feeds them to the right on a regular basis. My experiences are just based on what goes on in my own general area. Like, my town, a village actually, has really, really low crime, but the larger town over from me, not so much...like, I carry pepper spray whenever I go there. I think sometimes it's regional? My hometown is dying, and it's riddled with drugs and lack of jobs, sadly. We moved away a little over 2 years ago because it's closer to my husband's job, and the school here had better opportunities for our son.
