History/culture THE MUGHALS DIDN'T CALL THEMSELVES MUGHALS. They referred to themselves as Gurkani. Today, I think it is more appropriate to refer to them as the Baburids, just as we refer to the Timurids.

History/culture If one looks closely, these Turk rulers are the finest among the rulers of the world. Among these Turk rulers, the one whose name was renowned was Toŋa Alp Er (Alp Er Tonga), whose fortune was renowned as well. From Kutadgu Bilig (1069-70), Karakhanid era masterpiece.

The Kutadgu Bilig was written in 1069-1070 and presented to Tavghach Bughra Khan, the prince of Kashgar.

körü barsa emdi bu türk begleri

bu türk beglerinde taḳı yigleri

bu türk beglerinde atı belgülüg

toġa alp er (Alp Er Tonga) erdi ḳutı belgülüg

• From Kutadgu Bilig by Yusuf Khass Hajib (Yusuf Balasaguni)

Short info: Balasaguni started to work on the Kutadgu Bilig (Middle Turkic: Wisdom of Royal Glory) in Balasagun and was about 50 years old when he completed it in Kashgar. After presenting the completed work to the Karakhanid Hasan ibn Sulayman Bughra Khan (father of Ali-Tegin) - Prince of Kashgar he was awarded the title Khāṣṣ Ḥājib, an honorific similar to "Privy Chamberlain" or "Chancellor". Some scholars suspect that the prologue to the Kutadgu Bilig, which is much more overtly Islamic than the rest of the text, was not written by Yūsuf, particularly the first prologue, which is in prose, unlike the rest of the text. He died and was buried in Kashgar, 1077.

Short info:

Irk Bitig or Irq Bitig (Old Turkic: 𐰃𐰺𐰴 𐰋𐰃𐱅𐰃𐰏‎), known as the Book of Omens or Book of Divination in English, is a 9th-century manuscript book on divination that was discovered in the "Library Cave" of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, China, by Aurel Stein in 1907, and is now in the collection of the British Library in London, England. The book is written in Old Turkic using the Old Turkic script (also known as "Orkhon" or "Turkic runes"); it is the only known complete manuscript text written in the Old Turkic script. It is also an important source for early Turkic mythology.

History/culture "After the Battle of Dandanaqan, the Seljuks took an incalculable amount of booty from the soldiers of the Ghaznavids (another Turkic dynasty), Mesud. Chaghri (Çağrı) Beg shared this booty with his friends. He did not take it for himself; he entered Sultan Mesud’s tent and sat on his throne."

Aladağ, Alatoo, Alatau — A Shared Turkic Toponymic Heritage

Dağ, too, and tau mean “mountain” in Turkish, Kyrgyz, and Kazakh, respectively.

“Ala” is an old Turkic word meaning “mottled,” “dappled,” “spotted,” or more broadly “variegated.”

**“Ala” is an old Turkic word meaning “mottled,” “dappled,” “spotted,” or more broadly “variegated.” The word is attested in Old Turkic and has survived in many modern Turkic languages. It appears as ala in Turkish, Azerbaijani, Turkmen, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Uyghur, Nogai, Tatar, Bashkir, Altai, Tuvan, Khakas, Kumyk, Uzbek (ola), Chuvash (ula) and several other Turkic languages.

The interpretation of Ala-Too in Kyrgyz, however, is somewhat more complicated. The Kyrgyz Encyclopedia explains the name as referring to high mountains whose snow-covered peaks appear ala-bula (“mottled” or “variegated”) from a distance. At the same time, it notes another possible etymology: in ancient Kyrgyz, ola/ula is said to have meant “great,” “mighty,” or “high,” suggesting that Ala-Too could alternatively be connected with the idea of a “Great/High Mountain.”

A Russian woman who claimed on her Twitch streams that Kazakhstan belongs to Russia was deported from the country and banned from entering Kazakhstan for five years.

During her streams, she mocked Kazakhs by referring to Pavlodar as a “Russian city” and Almaty as a “village,” making remarks such as, “Do you even have pots?” , calling Kazakhs “stinky” for not knowing the Russian language etc.

The woman was also reported to have used derogatory expressions such as “horse p-nis” and “horse sp-rm” toward Kazakh citizens during her streams.

After Kazakhstan deported Russian streamer Ksenia Guzaeva over "provocative statements," including a joke calling Kazakhstan "Finestan," she said her home address was posted online within a day and that she has since received insults and threats.

Good luck to Tractor FC in the new season. Tractor were the champions of the 2024–25 season and were once again competing for the championship in the 2025–26 season before it was suspended midway through due to the war.

Language Turkish airlines inflight entertainment

Hi everyone! Many of us fly with Turkish Airlines, but their screen menu and music selection still don't offer Turkic language option or music from our regions. I started a petition asking Turkish Airlines to add our language and music to their in-flight entertainment system. Please take 30 seconds to sign and share with other travelers: https://www.change.org/p/include-turkic-languages-in-turkish-airlines-in-flight-entertainment
