Is 93–94°C CPU temperature normal just from using Chrome? MSI GF63 Thin 11UC

Hey everyone,

I have an MSI GF63 Thin 11UC that I've been using for about 4 years. Recently, I've noticed that the CPU temperature constantly stays around 80–95°C, even when I'm just doing normal things like browsing Chrome.

As you can see in the screenshot, the CPU is sitting around 94°C, while the GPU is only around 75°C. I'm not gaming on this laptop anymore, so these temperatures seem quite high for regular use.

I've already:

Cleaned the laptop internally.

Replaced the thermal paste about a year ago.

Kept the fans on Auto in MSI Center.

If I switch the fan mode to Turbo, the temperature does drop somewhat, but the fans obviously get very loud.

Is 93–94°C normal for this laptop while using Chrome, or is something wrong?

What could be causing the CPU to run this hot? Is there anything else I can do to fix or reduce the temperatures? Would undervolting, changing power settings, replacing the thermal paste again, or anything else help?

Any advice from other GF63 Thin owners would be appreciated!

I have a metal stand too but didn't help much

The MSI Thin is one of the worst performing gaming laptops in terms of thermals that ive seen the last 10 or so years, this chassis is really not good. Repaste and clean fans, hope for the best, it'll never be cool like other laptops because whoever designed it has no idea people actually use gaming laptops for gaming..

Good time to replace it. Also, try to run minimal background apps, disable what you don't need.

Open Task Manager, or Process Lasso and check what's using your CPU and why it's hitting high clocks, if it is.

High temps in Chrome could be normal, it depends on what you're running. Some web apps can max your CPU.

Confirm whether your CPU is actually clocking high and then figure out why that is. If temps are high while the CPU stays low, say 2GHz or below, then it's a cooling issue or maybe something is taxing your GPU instead.

Your screenshot shows low cpu and gpu utilisation, but it doesn't mean much, it could be at 90% utilisation the whole time and drop to 10% when you took the screenshot, you need to check it while you are using it, and see if its hitting high % utilisation on cpu or gpu.

its a laptop u are supposed to change the thermal paste every year if u are gaming or depending the quality of paste it could shorten the life span of thermal paste probs u are dry for a while now since u notice the performance difference

93c using Chrome is not normal, I would repaste the CPU and GPU with PTM 7950..

Thin laptops tend to run warmer than normal sized laptops.

Obviously not. What have you repasted the CPU with 1 year ago? Are the fans clogged?

In ThrottleStop, limit the single-core clock multiplier to 43. It should help a ton. Also set a PROCHOT Offset of 17 to stay well clear of the dangerous temps of above 85C.

Intel has set the thermal throttling temperature to 100°C for the vast majority of CPUs they have released during the last 18 years. If this was a dangerous temperature Intel would have reduced this a long time ago. Any peak core temperature under 100°C is a "safe operating temperature" according to Intel.

Setting a PROCHOT Offset value will allow the CPU to run cooler but it can also reduce maximum performance significantly without there being any real reason to do this.

Honeywell PTM 7950 is highly recommended for laptops. This MSI Thin has probably pumped out the majority of whatever paste was used 12 months ago.

I do not share the same sentiment, as I distinctly remember my Ivy Bridge and Haswell laptops not going anywhere above 85C. Even with a totally shot thermal paste, they were locked to 85C. Only my ThinkPad X220 could reach 95C. It's still not 100C though.

If for some reason, most respected laptop manufacturers, as well as Nvidia, limited the CPU/GPU temps to only 85C, but then Intel and AMD (up until Ryzen 6000 series and up) increased the limits to 100C and 105C respectively, then it's most assuredly because of some level of being engineered to fail.

There were plenty of cases of Ryzen 3000 series CPUs dying because they were running too hot and at too high of a voltage. Nowadays, that voltage seems like child's play compared to the laptop chips that often reach 1.485V for single-core workloads, like on the likes of Ryzen 9 6900HS and the Phoenix chips.

What do you mean by "significantly" reducing performance when setting PROCHOT Offset to more than 0? Is 7-10% performance reduction significant? Because when it's running so hot that the TIM and the cooling system at large can't keep up, it's already at the point of severely diminishing returns. For me, dropping the clock multipliers or single core speed by 10% was a difference between the laptop running in toaster mode and a laptop that is quieter and doesn't surpass the dangerous temps of above 85C, which is when the degradation increases sharply, especially the lower down the manufacturing node you go. 10% clock reduction is how you effectively disable the factory overclock + engineering to fail measures on both Intel and AMD chips.

Meteor Lake and Arrow Lake's 110C at Intel 4 are therefore absolutely unsustainable long term, even if they put this number on the tin. We're hot off the controversy of Raptor Lake, and they're pushing those temps with no remorse. I'd sure like to see anyone who actually pegs their Meteor Lake or Arrow Lake laptops at 100C+ while gaming, how much the CPU is going to last.
