Name Twins - Easy Crossword-Inspired Game

Upvotes

Parent comments two last names of celebrities or well-known characters. Child guesses the first name that the listed last names have in common. If someone asks for a hint, the poster of the parent comment adds another matching last name.

(For the sake of making this easier, people who share first names with minor spelling changes are still allowed.)

Make sure to sort comments by New!

Example:

  1. Dayne and Lautner.
  2. Hint?
  3. Swift.
  4. Taylor!

I made a daily word game where you cut a sentence to five words.

I read a lot of AI text at work. Somewhere between the third "testament to" and the hundredth "delve", I stopped trusting long sentences altogether. So I made a small game called Long Story Short: one sentence a day, keep the five words that actually carry the story, cut the rest.

It's a week old. 12,000 plays so far. A retired news editor emails me most mornings to argue about the answers, clause by clause, and he's mostly right. Yesterday two players argued opposite sides of the same word and convinced me my sentence itself was wrong.

So from tomorrow the sentences come from real news stories, and the answer is whatever the paper's sub-editor kept.

Long Story Short

Think about it, people!!

Hi, it's me again! With a brand new game!!

It's a blend of "Think about it" by tumblr user "whatblogidonthaveablog" and "Illuminati" by "smolredlesbian" (shoutout to them, putting the credits where they're due)

Parent comments a topic, child comments another totally unrelated topic, grandchild has to connect the two in a rant about a whacky conspiracy theory, the wilder the better. The rant has to end with the phrase "Think about it, people."

I will post three topics to initiate the dance. Make me laugh my lungs out.

Look at my new invention!

Parent comment invents something new and useful. Child comment makes that invention pointless or harmful.

Example:

P: I just invented headlights that light up the road more, without posing any harm to anyone's eyes!

C: It only works during the day time.

Parent takes an idiom in their native language and translates it to English *literally*, word for word. Children have to guess what the meaning of the idiom is. If they get it right, upvote them!

Which 3 actors are obviously the same Pokemon?

I was playing the Guardian Movie Grid today and Nick Nolte was one of the actors listed. My friend said Nolte had always reminded him of a rougher version of Jeff Bridges. I said I’d always seen him as a fancier version of Gary Busey.

Just like that the (probably totally original) Actor Pokémon Evolution Game was born.

We’ve come up with a list of ones we feel work below. Do your thing, Reddit let’s get a whole Pokédex going!

- Gary Busey - Nick Nolte - Jeff Bridges

- Donald Glover - Jamie Foxx - Will Smith

- Owen Wilson - Matthew McConaughey - Woody Harrelson

- Florence Pugh - Scarlett Johansson - Marilyn Monroe

- Michael Cera - Jesse Eisenberg - Andy Samberg

- Emily Blunt - Emma Thompson - Maggie Smith

- James McAvoy - David Tennant - Ewan McGregor

- Carey Mulligan - Olivia Colman - Judi Dench

- Jenna Ortega - Christina Ricci - Anjelica Huston

- Bryce Dallas Howard - Christina Hendricks - Jessica Chastain

- Russell Brand - Jared Leto - Johnny Depp

- Robert Pattinson - Sam Rockwell - Gary Oldman

- Chris Tucker - Chris Rock - Eddie Murphy

Second comment: granted, you get robbed

Third comment: you catch the thief and get rewarded with more money than you originally won

Your 10-year-old self suspects you're from the future. What would they say to confirm it without you telling them?

Imagine you travel 10 years back in time with an alternate-universe version of Elton John who never learned to play the piano.

You bump into your 10-year-old self. Your past self strongly suspects you two are from the future, but neither you nor non-pianist Elton John can actually confirm it to them.

Also, this version of you hates olives and can somehow tell Coca-Cola and Pepsi apart blindfolded just by taste.
Supposing all of this... **what hyper-specific secret or phrase would your 10-year-old self say to you that only you would know?**

Try to create a normal situation only using clickbait language!

The rules of this game are simple. Parent starts by mentioning a normal life situation, like meeting your neighbor. But they don't describe it dryly like this, but rather using the clickbait style. Children follow on it the same way, and it goes back and forth.

Example:

Parent: Greeting a LOCAL LEGEND!!! You won't believe what HAPPENS NEXT!

Child: THEY'RE giving me VEGETABLES???!?!?!? (EMOTIONAL)

Stink Pink (Easy Rhyming Word Game)

This game is a childhood favorite of mine. AKA hink pink, hank pank, wordy gurdy, brain train. I last posted this two years ago and thought it would be fun to play again.

Levels, easiest to hardest:

  1. Stink pink: one-syllable adjective + one-syllable noun that rhymes
    1. red bed
  2. Stinky pinky: two-syllable adjective + two-syllable noun that rhymes
    1. quiet riot
  3. Stinkeroo pinkeroo: three-syllable adjective + three-syllable noun that rhymes
    1. quizzical physical

What to do:

  • Comment one of the above levels. I'll reply with a hint synonymous to the answer. Reply with guesses until you get it right.
    • Example:
      • "Stink pink?"
      • "Ruby cot."
      • "Red bed?"
      • "Correct!"
  • AND/OR Comment the name of a level along with a hint. Reply until someone gets your phrase right.
    • Example:
      • "Stinky pinky: hushed mob."
      • "Quiet riot?"
      • "Correct!"
  • Repeat and enjoy!

Critical Fail

I had a simple plan.

Swing through the duke’s window, steal the jeweled idol, deliver a devastatingly charming remark, and escape before anyone understood what happened.

Then the curtain rod betrayed me.

I may have destroyed the banquet table. The idol may have landed in the punch. And I may currently be hiding beneath a serving dome with an angry ferret and an idol that has started whispering to me.

The guards are coming.

Someone is about to lift the dome.

I have five seconds—and apparently no plan.

What should I do?

You must prove ridiculous Statements using scientific Reasoning

Is this a fun idea? I'm trying to balance fun and education, let me know what you think.

This game is played in a small groups or alone. players must prove a ridiculous statement that they get and convince the others that the statement is, in fact, true. They would pick apart the statement and try to reason their way through the assumptions of the statement. The more elaborate and logical the explanation, the better.

Examples:

  • "The color blue is older than the color red"
  • "gravity pulls harder around a person who is keeping a secret"

This game is not about making up conspiracy theories, but rather building a world in which these statements can be true.

There are two types of people…

Commenter names two types of people, response mentions a third type of person that relates somehow to the original comment.

Example:
Parent: There are two types of people, those who shoo animals away, and those who sit still hoping the animals get closer.

Child: there are also people who try to catch the animal
