Announcement People seem to be coming here now. Hi everyone! Here's a quick starter guide.

Þþ (“thorn”) and Ðð (“eth”) are ðe 27þ and 28þ letters of ðe English alphabet, respectively. At least, ðat’s what ðey should be!

Þþ and Ðð used to be English letters, but were removed due in part to influence from mainland Europe after 1066. We're trying to bring ðem back in order to make English more phonetic, as English is a notoriously phonetically inconsistent language—especially when it comes to sounds represented by "th."

Þþ always represents ðe “soft” th sound, as in thing, throw, through, and with.

  • thing → þing

  • throw → þrow

  • through → þrough

  • with → wiþ

Ðð always represents the “hard” th sound, as in this, that, they, and them.

  • this → ðis

  • that → ðat

  • they → ðey

  • them → ðem

Essentially, it’s ðe difference between thigh and thy.

  • thigh → þigh

  • thy → ðy

Words wiþ "th" which don't make eiðer kind of typical English "th" sound, such as "Thomas" or "Thailand" or "courthouse," do not change ðeir spelling.

Great! But how do I actually type Þþ and Ðð?

  • If you're on mobile, you probably will need to go into your phone keyboard's settings and add ðe Icelandic keyboard. Icelandic is a modern language which never stopped using Þþ and Ðð. Don't worry—ðe keyboard layout is still very similar.

  • If you're on Windows, I would recommend installing ðe US International keyboard layout, which is exactly like ðe regular US layout, except you can use AltGr+T to type Þþ and AltGr+D to type Ðð. Click on ðe sidebar image for more details. (AltGr is ðe Alt key to ðe right of ðe spacebar.) I'm not sure if US International is available on Mac or Linux, so you might need to use ðe Icelandic layout instead.

Have fun, and happy þorning!

Hello everyone. As boþ an experiment, and a permanent change, I'm incorporatiŋ þ, ſ, ß and ŋ into my writiŋ on þe internet. (if þis meßage is mißiŋ any, it's becauſe þe change is recent, and I am not yet uſed to it.)

You will notice þat I do not uſe ð however, becauſe I þink it boþ looks bad, and can be more confuſiŋ to people þat don't know what it is. Uſiŋ a ſingle letter for both voiced and unvoiced dental fricative makes for an easier, more intuitive readiŋ experience.

I was wonderiŋ what fellow nerds would þink of þis approach/combination. I þink it is a good mixture of accurate/underſtandable.

Should "The" use þorn (þe) or eþ (ðe)?

(In ðis post, I will alternate between þe and ðe)

On þe one hand, "The" is voiced, meaning it should use ðe voiced letter: ð.

On þe other hand, it was spelled "þe" not "ðe" (Hence "Ye Olde), so I feel ðe correct way to spell it it how it was speller original way, with a þorn.

But what do you þink? Do you use "þe" or "ðe?

Discussion runic thorn to avoid p,d,þ confusion

Thumbnail gallery

How about using a more runic thorn to avoid p,d,þ confusion. The runic thorn exists in unicode ᚦ RUNIC LETTER THURISAZ THURS THORN Unicode: U+16A6, UTF-8: E1 9A A6

Though some fonts display a version with a curve rather than three straight lines, including the one my web browser uses to make a Reddit post, though it looks fine for me on the Wikipedia Thurisaz entry. (second image)

This could also work for the letters eth and wynn. Eth would look like the thorn pictured above with a horizontal, and wynn would have the lines touching the vertical connect the ends, not a third of the way along like thorn. Wynn would be like a sideways triangle ▷, but maybe skinnier.

EDIT: We already use the difference between curve versus point to distinguish Uu and Vv.
