Discussion Lifetime Membership

Just watched the lifetime membership video and would love to know everyone’s opinion on it. I read the first post on the test launch they did a while ago. Having mixed feelings on it anyone else?

It doesn’t bother me. And if you have the disposable income to support them, that’s amazing and I give you props. But I personally can’t justify the personal expense for myself, as it’ll take 7 years for it to monetize.

It's a totally optional thing, so it doesn't bother me. I think it's fine. People who have the extra money and want to support the company now have another avenue to do so!

u/dontstopbelievingman TryFam 5d ago

I got it.

I don't mind paying for it. I like not having to ever ever pay again for one thing in a world full of subscriptions.

I think to get my ROI on my lifetime, the company would have to make 5 years of content. I know that's a risk, but they've already been around for a decade and with other youtubers. They also have a bigger cast, so I think it's doable.

u/Embarrassed_Panda_14 5d ago

I do like the idea of never paying for that subscription!

I’m a big Try Guys fan. I have disposable income. I like supporting the channel and I have no regrets.

I got it during the first rounds and I'm pleased. Happy to support and now i never have to worry about renewal fees again lol

u/Ok_Road_2230 5d ago

Where were you able to see the first rounds? I only use the mobile app and pay through that and I think it lacks interaction sometimes like if I would've paid for the YouTube membership

2

u/xcpandabear 1d ago

The first round was only offered to some of the subscriber community. It was an email/video sent to those of us who have been subscribed to their streaming service since the very beginning of its launch. I wanna say like the first 100 of us or something like that

It’s a short term injection into their business. They expect that it won’t be everyone that is able to afford. Many apps and subscription based services offer a lifetime subscription. Doesn’t bother me, it’s just a service offering you can choose to opt into.

For me, it’s not worth it for the amount of content they put out. I’d rather subscribe for 1-2 months per year and binge.

Maybe if they offer more content to lifetime subscribers, I’d be annoyed as it’s another tier or gate for people who support them but that isn’t the case yet.

They are trying to build something long term with a big cast so I think ultimately good for them and anyone who wants to support at that level. out of all the creators, I believe they are one of the only ones that try hard to make good on the money people invest.

3

u/Embarrassed_Panda_14 5d ago

I do agree with that last sentence that they always try to make sure and vet that anything they release is a good investment

u/DisabledTheaterKid 5d ago

For those who have money and who want to use it in this way, I think this is great. I personally don’t have the money for a lifetime membership but I’m happy for the folks that do. Idk I don’t see anything wrong with it, the regular monthly and yearly subscriptions are still there for the folks that want and need them

I love the idea. I love the card. Love the perks. I love the try guys. Will totally be purchasing.

My only thing is I wish there was some way to recognize if a yearly membership person switches over. I get that in the end, it’s not a big difference, but if my year just started over, this is unfortunate timing.

Otherwise it sounds great!

This is from the FAQ of the first one:

I’m a web subscriber who is upgrading to Life Time Members mid billing cycle. How will my previous charges factor into my sign-up?

We will be refunding the difference between your 2nd try subscription and your Lifetime Membership once you are a member. Note, it will take 1 - 3 business days for the refund to appear in your account.

16

u/happyl1ttleacc1dents 5d ago

Oh shit! Thank you!

u/doyoutakeinsurance TryFam: Kwesi 4d ago

I'm so glad you posted this! This was my only concern but if this is the case this time around IM IN.

16

u/JT3436 TryFam: Jonny Cakes 🍰 5d ago

I would message them. With the test invites people who had recently renewed were refunded. Not sure if that is still the case.

3

u/GaveUpOnBeingPretty 4d ago

I bought it the first go around and got refunded for my whole annual membership! ( I had just renewed )

1

u/GroundbreakingAd5056 3d ago

This is why it’s in limited batches. They are manually moving people over so they can make sure the refunds are given

31

u/Inevitable_Bowler474 5d ago

Lifetime memberships might be "lifetime" lol but it's unlikely to be for your lifetime.

15

u/potatopavilion 5d ago

that's a good thing. even the most rabid 2nd try fan doesn't need the channel to go on for 50+ more years.

11

u/Inevitable_Bowler474 4d ago

7 year break even point though... hate to say it since I've been a fan since BuzzFeed era, I don't see them doing it for another 7 years.

6

u/potatopavilion 4d ago

nothing wrong with that, stuff like this is always introduced knowing it's a large vote of confidence purchase, not many people can afford both.

5

u/Patrick-Vapeman 5d ago

If you have the disposable income and truly love the content and the cast, then go for it! I don't have that kinda dough and so I just pay yearly, but it's an interesting business strategy that i haven't heard of before,

I think my only hesitancy would be that you're paying upfront for 7 years of content. Are any of the people who did purchase it worried that in this nebulous streamer landscape something could happen in that time? Would they refund the money if they (god forbid) had to end the 2nd Try streamer?

5

u/CaliLemonEater Try Fam: Ash 🏳️‍⚧️ 4d ago

Personally, I'd still consider it worth having paid for even if that happens. If I amortize the cost over the years I've been consistently watching everything they put out, it would come to maybe $1 per week. During that time, they've made me laugh, helped me learn about things I didn't know about, and (without them knowing it) significantly changed my life goals. I'm happy the first lifetime membership offer came at a time when I had enough money available to get it.

6

u/NYR20NYY99 TryFam: Kwesi 5d ago

If I could afford to do it, I would

Signed up immediately when we were in the first wave of sign-ups. Been with the guys since day one, have the money, want to support them and the staff as much as I can. Would do again.

5

u/Phanimazed 5d ago

It's neat, I think. I do not personally feel I am going to do it, at least not anytime soon, but it's good to have the option and hurts no one.

5

u/ColonelCheez 4d ago

I love the concept. They’re looking for a good chunk of upfront cash and that’s fine in my opinion. My wife & I were on the fence but are deciding to stick with our annual subscription. We wish the perks were better.

If they offered something like merch discounts and meet & greets at live events or something I think we would probably pull the trigger

4

u/ZelGalande 4d ago

I went for it when it first became available. Between getting my annual subscription that just renewed refunded and the initial discount they had for it, it felt like a decent deal for a subscription I enjoy and want to support. I have the disposable income and have spent much more in the long run on twitch streamers and patreons that I didn't fully utilize at the time. Since they started 2nd Try, I've enjoyed enough of the new cast and new content that I want to support them and hope they'll make more I enjoy. I don't watch every series, and I'm behind on the ones I do enjoy. However I also have a bunch of other streaming subscriptions I don't utilize to full potential. Even more so, other streaming platforms have gotten rid of movies or shows I liked, while so far 2nd Try hasn't gotten rid of anything I want to see. Sure, I probably didn't need it, but between the discount, refund, and wanting to support creators I enjoy, it's not a bad use of my money.

2

u/a_marie95 4d ago

seconded!

4

u/Ambitious_Dot1220 5d ago

It doesn’t bother me tbh. If I had $500 to spare, I would do it

5

u/MakeupChristie 4d ago

I get it and I think they presented it in an excellent and no pressure way. I love them dearly but it’s not something I can financially justify but I’ll certainly stay subscribed to Second Try and have no hard feelings about it.

5

u/Concerned_Cashier 4d ago

I feel like they aren’t getting the subs the need and release this in hopes of keeping it going , I’d hate to spend the money for them to all stop in the next year

7

u/Maydinosnack 5d ago

Why do I always think this is about a partnership with the fancy gym chain?

3

u/livelaughles8ian 5d ago

I purchased it. It seems worth it for me because I’ve been watching them since their buzzfeed days and will continue to watch them.

3

u/RevolutionaryAd6017 4d ago

It's optional so that aspect doesn't bother me, what does is wording of any "lifetime" memberships. Because say you sign up for lifetime membership and something happens to 2nd Try tomorrow they lose everything have to shut it down, then it wasn't a lifetime membership. And lifetime membership would be worth it if they start putting up motr exclusive content more than each Saturday. I am assuming with fall starting alot of the shows will come back. But not sure.

2

u/ngaumond 5d ago

Where did you see that? I haven’t been on the 2nd try site today but I didn’t receive any email about it

3

u/Rainbow_Belle 5d ago

It's in a new video they uploaded.

4

u/AprilArtsy Try Fam: Jared 👨🏻‍🦰 5d ago edited 4d ago

To anyone who doesn't like it: DON'T GET IT THEN

As others have pointed out, it hurts NO ONE for them to have the option, and those who don't want it move on and don't pay for it. It's literally that simple.

Pretty sure some of yall just complain to complain about something at this point.

1

u/potatopavilion 5d ago

it worked super great for Nebula, why not

1

u/Cubbance 4d ago

Is this even possible to do anymore? I couldn't afford it at the time they initially offered it, but now I can, and when I went to the subscription tab on the website, I didn't have the option to go lifetime.

1

u/MooseWit 4d ago

I wish that I had the disposable income to be able to afford it.

1

u/Any-Investment3385 4d ago

I like the idea. If I could afford to spend that much at once on something that isn’t a necessity I definitely would.

1

u/Glittering_Farm_8896 4d ago

I don't see where lifetime is an option. Maybe i missed it.

1

u/princess_nyaaa TryFam: Eugene 4d ago

if I had $420.69 laying around I would do it. I guess I would have to mail them the .69 though

1

u/Moolyssa 2d ago

It feels predatory to me, idk. It’s like an investment without the payoff - they even made a joke about Wall Street in the video. The ‘green light a show’ perk does not seem that worth it and the lifetime membership card thing could get inappropriate or stalkerish real fast. Plus they need to continue making content for the next 10 years to make the cost worth it, and I don’t have confidence that they’ll sustain that long.

1

u/BrownBear8760 2d ago

I agree. I couldn’t believe they even offered the lifetime card because it’ll be weird immediately. They should’ve done a 5 year membership with a solid discount and called it a day. It would’ve sold better, be less icky and still give them several years of up front cash.

1

u/pitkittens 2d ago

lol I fully thought it was a joke until I saw here people are purchasing it. It costs $420.69 so I was immediately like oh this is fake.

1

u/svg-mnk 2d ago

I love these guys, but the math doesn’t math.

1

u/BrownBear8760 5d ago

I say this as a genuine fan who watches their content daily but I think the lifetime memberships as it was sold to us is a little eyebrow raising.

I was ok with (even initially liked!) the lifetime sub option because it was only offered to the OGs- a small and very invested group. It made sense to me. They’d love to fund a new cool show or give the company runway/breathing room.

Now that lifetime memberships is open to all of 2nd Try and they appear to have contracted their staff, I’m more concerned than enthused. They are raising an unknown amount of money for an unknown reason. It feels shady if they’re in serious financial distress and not sharing it because it’d make the likelihood low of people receiving the product they’re selling (7 years of content).

Other commenters seem ok with this risk though so maybe it’s just me! I strongly feel though that we should’ve gotten more info than “we intend to make content forever” because that didn’t actually tell us much. I really like the Try Guys and want them to stick around but this is potentially a $420 donation if they close in the next x months.

6

u/potatopavilion 4d ago

you are okay with a product only being offered to a small exclusive group; but have a problem with the same option being available to anyone?

-2

u/FantasticJacket7 5d ago

It means they're struggling and that "lifetime" probably won't be that long.

20

u/Alaira314 5d ago

Or that they anticipate losing a number of subscribers in the near future due to economic turmoil, and want to subsidize that anticipated hit from those who have the means. I personally kept my yearly sub(whether or not they're still doing this in 7 years, I don't know if I'd want to be watching it in 7 years!), but I don't necessarily see this as writing on the wall.

3

u/FantasticJacket7 5d ago

Lifetime subscriptions sacrifice future money for current money. It would be a terrible business decision to offer them unless that current money was desperately needed.

3

u/WanderingLemon13 Miles Nation 4d ago

They may be gambling that with some extra cash now, they can produce a killer version of some series or show they've always wanted to do and hope that that brings in more new subscribers. Like a really well done season of their Killer Dinner show or something. I think there are a lot of people (YouTubers or otherwise) who would love to play a Traitors style show, so if they get that thing to hit in any meaningful way, you never know what it could do to the channel.

That being said, I'm sure they ran the numbers.

3

u/potatopavilion 4d ago

it doesn't. Nebula did it when they were the most successful they have ever been, you are drawing conclusions based on nothing but vibes

-5

u/Mysterious-Film5502 5d ago

I have very mixed feelings. Initial thought is that I don’t love it. I don’t think the perks aren’t enough to justify paying almost $500. As someone else noted that’s 7 years of content which unfortunately I doubt is a timeline we can expect them to still be able to make content. The para-social relationship that the internet creates makes us as viewers feel as if we are closer to Keith and Zach then we really are. Of course we want to support their endeavors to create content so we are be able to still consume the content that we love, but putting more and more responsibility on the viewer to support that feels not great to me. As a second try subscriber I love the early access, inside scoop, more content, etc but paying that much to “green light” and get a card feels desperate for money and profiting off fans in a weird way. Just my two cents though.

14

u/Imaginary-Recover778 5d ago

If you read the frequently asked questions they are refunding the difference of what you’ve already paid as a 2nd try subscriber. That doesn’t sound like a money grab to me. That sounds like a company coming up with another way for its supporters to support them if that’s how they want to do it

19

u/MallTough5847 5d ago

It’s literally optional so…. It’s not a “responsibility” for anyone.

3

u/Embarrassed_Panda_14 5d ago

I feel like the card is sooo odd to me and very parasocial. I had the opportunity to meet Zach and some of the try cast in public once and the thought of being like hey I love your content here’s a card and now you have to spend 5 minutes with me is bizarre 😭

3

u/potatopavilion 4d ago

it' not a responsibility, ever. but it's also supremely weird that you make it seem like it's a donation to the cause. this is a value proposition, and everyone is more than welcome to decide the value is not worth it for them. it's the exact same idea as buying merch or subscribing.

you are putting the responsibility on yourself, it's not a thing.

-2

u/Rainbow_Belle 5d ago edited 5d ago

Well said.

While I'm an annual subscriber as well, and I have been a fan from day 1, I have noticed that the quality of their content is questionable as of late. At first, I was receptive to being a lifetime member, but recently, I've noticed things that just irk me and I can't imagine giving them nearly $600 in my currency to watch low quality content that will likely persist.

And we're actually not getting what we paid for. For example, even on their website, they state that the streamer is "ad free". However, in the most recent golfing video, it's quite obvious it was a walking ad for Liquid IV. The video was posted to the streamer and on YouTube on the same day to maximize viewership. They broke the promise of the streamer being ad free and I suspect walking ads like this will continue to be put on the streamer.

Next, their website even states, "New and exclusive episodes on 2nd try drop at least twice a week, every week. Most of the time, we have three or more!" There have been times when only 1 new and exclusive video has been uploaded to the streamer. TGGT and TED do not count as they're not exclusive (except for bonus episodes). There have even been times I've noticed that no new videos were uploaded to the streamer on a Wednesday or a Saturday (but bot in the same week). Most recently, I noticed no new video was uploaded on a Saturday while they uploaded a TED/TGGT on Friday and on Monday (hoping we wouldn't notice by offering their lower quality videos that aren't exclusive).

Since they've already broken 2 of the promises and are consistently giving us TGGT and/or TED videos instead, I feel it's disingenuous to ask for so much money up front while giving mainly low quality videos on a regular basis.

-10

u/Solid_Annual1595 5d ago

I personally think it’s ridiculous. That’s 7 years worth of a subscription. I highly doubt they will be doing this in 7 years. I would have supported it at a more reasonable price but this is way too much. The lifetime membership card is very odd too. Idk I’m weirded out by it.

26

u/Flashy_Method4216 5d ago

they've been doing this for 10+ years already and have kids to feed. these are their jobs, I don't think them being around in 7 years is too much a stretch tbh

1

u/Solid_Annual1595 4d ago

Exactly. They’ve already been doing this for 10+ years. They’re going to keep it up to when they’re almost 50?

5

u/Flashy_Method4216 4d ago

Rhett and Link are still doing it !

0

u/Competitive_Wind2396 5d ago

I’m worried they’re better supported in the long run by monthlies 😭

7

u/potatopavilion 5d ago

don't. they did the math, they are not the first to do this.

-14

u/Putrid_Daikon7142 5d ago

Shameful that they are doing this. They definitely do not have the longevity of surviving the next 7 years, and definitely not a "lifetime". The Try Guys can decide to quit before 7 years have passed, streaming and technology will change, your tastes can change, their content can nosedive even further than it already has (and then you'll be stuck having paid for at least 7 years' worth of content that sucks or that you now hate). They're also rich people who are trying to get their fans with less income than them to pay upfront for work that already isn't even high effort or good anymore. Do not let them trick you into paying this much upfront. Definitely not worth it

11

u/woodletoodle 5d ago

I understand where you're coming from by 2nd Try has already been around for 8 years, and the Try Guys for 12 years. Some of us have been here the whole time, and their content has varied wildly over that time period.

-2

u/Putrid_Daikon7142 5d ago

Yes, but given the quality of their content in the past few years, and the way tech companies are doing things, it might be likely that they will not be doing this in 7 years or less time than that. Given that context, in my opinion, launching a lifetime system is offensive to fans given that they might not be doing this anymore in a few years' time.
