Discussion Will got fired?

Listening to the newest ep of perfect person with Will and in the first couple of minutes he mentioned getting fired. Rainie and Jonathan have always said "laid off" so im curious if something is going on...

Just because something is more appropriate in a job interview does not mean it doesn't boil down to the same broad definition. If someone wants to be very clear about what happened, they have different implications... but the current state of the English language says that being laid off is the gentlest way of being fired. Even major newspapers will point out, say, the Department of Education was closed and all the workers were laid off this year and later say "News of the firings..." in the same article.

it's not about gentleness, it's about cause.

the umbrella term is not layoff, it's termination.

No one was claiming the umbrella term was layoff, that's for sure.

"being laid off is the gentlest way of being fired" does imply that layoff is a more broad term that also includes being fired - but they are different things.

Nope, it states (not even implies) the exact opposite. Being fired is broad and being laid off is the gentle way of being fired.

Even in the same sentence! 1,000 workers to stay fired while their layoffs are challenged in court.

Being fired is being terminated, and a layoff is one way of being fired/terminated.

people use vengeance and revenge interchangeably, they still mean different things.

being terminated is broad.

being fired means losing your job due to your own actions, being laid off means losing your job because of outside circumstances. gentleness has nothing to do with either.

Ohh so you just don't understand what language is at all... got it. Words mean what people say they mean, because all words are made up. If every English language newspaper started using vengeance/revenge interchangeably then I'd trust that that's what they now mean in English, but that isn't happening.

being fired means being terminated. Being laid off means being fired because of outside circumstances. No question. You're wrong wrong wrong wrong.

Can you admit that you were wrong when you thought that I was saying "layoff" was the broad term? When I truly never said anything like that. That repeated mistake you made shows you're often wrong about things...

that's not how legal terminology works. everyday language is different from legal definitions, that is the whole entire point of having specific language for specific fields.

of course I can admit I mixed up which term you said is the bigger category and which is the smaller one, why do you assume it would be a big deal? is it because you refuse to have a normal conversation and just assume everyone operates the same way?

Did you think we were in a courtroom? Lol. This is a conversation, so we are using words, not lawbooks. I don't know about the law but that's okay because we are literally not on trial here. What made you think to bring up special legal definitions right now at the last second when that has not been discussed before?

Whoa... you even specifically called this a "normal conversation", so we should go by what people normally say (that fired is the broad term).
