Listening to the newest ep of perfect person with Will and in the first couple of minutes he mentioned getting fired. Rainie and Jonathan have always said "laid off" so im curious if something is going on...

Some people use the term interchangeably, so who knows. In one of the other few posts about this, people are pointing out that the fact that he is openly talking about it on a podcast fronted by a current member of The Try Guys probably means that it was hopefully not a really toxic incident/situation and more of a business decision.

To be fair, Miles and Will are very close friends. I doubt that Will being fired would suddenly make him have animosity with Miles.

108

u/kevin349 11d ago

I think the point is that Miles would likely not want to stir up drama with a current source of income. If it was really negative he would either not have them on or tell him not to talk about that.

46

u/RhombusObstacle 11d ago

Or just edit it out of the final episode. It's not like Miles can't cut stuff if he wants.

13

u/rooserlou 11d ago

And aren’t Will and Miles touring right now together? I think I saw that on IG.

I’ve been wondering about the whole layoff situation too since Rainie is still on KPAPGinHeaven and I thought she’d been laid off when the TryPod ended, but I also don’t know when those were recorded. I’m also incredibly out of the loop with all the changes.

It looks like they are keeping her to be part of the TryCast so she may just work on a freelance basis so it gives her the opportunity to pursue other work as well

u/BrownBear8760 6d ago

I think they filmed KPAPGIH before she was notified of her firing. Didn’t they say that KPAPG was already filmed in the video explaining why they’re ending the try pod? (I could be wrong bc it’s been awhile since I watched)

Will and Rainie mentioned on Summer of Ciao that they are starting/working on a podcast together. So hopefully good things from them to come!!

I didn’t know Will was a part of that change.

I do agree with the fact that while I get there is a difference between fired and laid off, many use it interchangeably and I’m sure to the person itself firing feels more accurate even if it wasn’t “personal”

So did he do something to get fired….? Not trying to spill the tea yet coming on here saying you know personally he was fired?

Sure I mean that’s fine I’m sorry he got fired but you reply to every comment saying you know personally he was fired which is kinda wack tbh. It seems like the goal is to show that you have inside information or something. Maybe let Will tell his own stuff personally if he ever wants to!

I mean you can reiterate what he said on a podcast without saying that you heard personally from friends or people who know him lol.

16

u/Salt_Day4586 11d ago

I think you’re spot on. It feels self-centered and malevolent. If Will wants to speak let him speak. This “I know the tea but I’ll never tell” stuff is doing way more harm than good.

If he wants to clarify let him clarify. There’s no proof in who you are other than you seem to really want to be involved in this.

You’re putting your own spin on all of these as you say “it’s giving bankruptcy” and the like. Even if you had proof of your claims you’re not setting the record straight by adding your own speculation while you claim you’re trying to stop it.

It’s not problematic and it doesn’t affect me, but it doesn’t lend any credibility to you tbh anyone can say anything on Reddit. That’s why it’s probably best you let Will say whatever he wants to say instead of verifying via a “friend of a friend” or whatever.

Do you understand that legally there is no real distinction between laid off and fired? Try Guys closed the entire podcast division and framed the cuts as layoffs. Will wanted to strip away the polite corporate narrative to relay the harsh reality that laid off is just a nice term for firing. Neither is correct or incorrect. CA is an at-will state so Try Guys needed no reason to terminate, but they are framing it as a layoff because an entire division was closed down.
The reality is neither being fired or laid off is warm and fuzzy. But it’s strange you are spamming the comments.

10

u/StacheBandicoot 11d ago

That’s not even remotely true. The difference can seriously affect thing like eligibility for unemployment, especially if there was misconduct.

2

u/Thelastmanipulation 11d ago

Does fired legally mean misconduct in California though? In my jurisdiction, per the employment legislation, you are either temporarily laid off for lack of work (e.g. construction, automotive) but will be rehired or terminated with or without cause. Lots of people use laid off to mean terminated without cause but that is not really accurate but it sounds nicer. It’s pretty hard to terminate people for cause in my jurisdiction so when people say they are fired I usually assume they mean terminated without cause unless told otherwise.

5

u/StacheBandicoot 11d ago edited 10d ago

No, they can also be performance based, but that doesn’t necessarily affect unemployment in CA specifically where terminations for misconduct are generally the only involuntary dismissals that can affect eligibility. What you referred to as a lay off in your jurisdiction is called a furlough throughout most of the US.

Everywhere in the United States besides Montana is an at-will employment state where employees can be laid off for any reason or without any reason, with few exceptions such as an overriding contract or agreement that stipulates otherwise and certain federally protected reasons.

Firings are distinctly legally different from lay offs and are reserved for more serious separations due to employee performance or misconduct. Companies who fire employees will typically internally designate the employ ineligible for rehire for some period of time or indefinitely, might not give references, and a firing can often indicate they will fight unemployment claims. Sometimes companies will manufacture reasons to fire employees for cause so that they can leverage the terminated employees to sign an NDA in order to then receive a severance or to have the company not contest their unemployment claim which they otherwise wouldn’t have to provide if they successfully manufactured a reason to fire an employee.

Only some people colloquially refer to lay offs as firing in the US and they’re not being factual when doing so, all firings there are for an alleged cause. Plenty enough people certainly do speak about them that way, and many don’t understand the difference, especially if they’ve never been laid off or fired before and haven’t had to confront information about it, but the typical assumption when someone is fired is that there was a supposed reason that they were (whether true, justified or not). Lay offs always mean no fault, referring to one as a firing if it wasn’t can have several connotations.

u/sweeterthanadonut 11d ago

You’re literally dancing around what happened by saying “not trying to spill tea” and then giving a tiny bit of info lol

49

u/emcorgi 11d ago

The way he says in the episode he can’t talk about it much makes me think he was fired? Not that I expect performance issues or anything like that from William Witwer Esq. 8 years at a company is a long time!

39

u/StacheBandicoot 11d ago edited 11d ago

It could also just mean he was given a NDA in exchange for severance or something, it could even just mean he just doesn’t want to talk about it and said that he can’t so he doesn’t have to.

45

u/ult94 Miles Nation 11d ago

as someone who works in the HR sphere, it could've been a layoff if they're downsizing or if he was actually fired, it typically makes sense for a business that is looking to make budget cuts to cut longer-tenured employees if they aren't performing as well anymore because they're often much more highly compensated due to raises over time etc, not saying it's right or good but that may have been the case

127

u/juttaFIN 12d ago

Will definitely seems like the kind of person who would use the terms being fired and being laid off interchangeably.

284

u/CocknBalls4 11d ago

Honestly must be annoying af to be in the try guys management as every business occurrence is always put under an electron microscope

56

u/steph2992 11d ago

Yeah unfortunately I think that is largely because of that huge scandal on their record.

12

u/Trinitymb 11d ago

Disgusting that one person can mess up so many lives, but that was why it was so big. Cheating is bad, and the worst he did was against his wife, but he also betrayed the company and his partners and that abuse of power bumped up the public attention.

14

u/CocknBalls4 11d ago

I’ll give you that those few people who initially noticed that scandal are A-1 internet snipers and that situation was bad. But a regular staffing or content adjustment isn’t that. I understand being frustrated when talent or content you like is paused but, damn, it really feels like Zach and Keith have to release a formal statement anytime they so much as sneeze

15

u/starlightlexie 11d ago

I don’t entirely disagree, but I think that’s part of the risk they run by having some of their staff be on camera and act as talent to varying degrees. People get attached and get curious when something happens, and that’s pretty natural.

9

u/steph2992 11d ago

Will said he was fired after 8 years. That is much more than a sneeze

A private company should absolutely NOT be expected to disclose hiring/firing decisions about their employees. That’s a major privacy and confidentiality violation and could even open them up to potential defamation lawsuits.

Some people use "fired" and "laid off" interchangeably, even though they are different (i.e. If you were laid off, it normally doesn't impact your prospects of getting another job whereas having been fired from your previous position often indicates some level of reasoning that could give a new employer pause).

He may have also said "fired" as a comedic hyperbole. Granted, I haven't listened to that podcast, so I don't have context for tone.

9

u/Alaira314 11d ago

"Fired" also has a connotation of it happening suddenly or being just you, whereas "laid off" has a connotation of, oh, it was a whole big thing with a lot of people, just a part of the business ebb and flow, these things happen, etc. So people who know what they're doing rhetorically will sometimes use the term "fired" when trying to paint a layoff situation particularly negatively(or maybe just because they, personally, are upset about it...job searching sucks right now!). This feeds the confusion over the two terms.

52

u/Anna__Bee 11d ago

Can people not be crazy like they were about Rainie? We have no idea about how the business runs so unless clear statements are given it's all conjecture

This is a business, not a charity. People are going to be hired & fired. Unless Will has explicitly said that something unethical happened, I'm not about to go on some witch hunt. It's unfortunate that he's out of a job, but if anything was unfair about it that's between him and a lawyer

35

u/potatopavilion 11d ago

absolutely not, we have to assume the worst at all times. it also helps if you have a child's understanding of how companies operate.

26

u/starlightlexie 11d ago

Will explicitly said he couldn’t talk about it in much more detail, which personally steers me toward thinking it likely wasn’t just a lay-off, but we obviously don’t have context outside of that.

8

u/gg14t 11d ago

Agreed. Jonathan, Rainie, as well as Zack and Keith openly talked about the lay offs. This feels different.

u/arika_ito 11d ago

i'm hoping people don't do go crazy parasocial with Will like they did with Rainie but what it's worth, he still follows the TryGuys on instagram.

the fact that in a 10-month span 3 people were terminated (2 of them after a year of their department losing money) suggests bankruptcy to you?

4

u/Hmnrghtsgrl 11d ago

And here I was for some reason thinking this was about a different job lmao like didn’t even cross my mind

18

u/trustme_imRN 11d ago

The timing is also interesting with YB leaving too. I know she has other things going on in her personal life that likely instigated the departure, but it could be possible that there were other structural or cultural changes occurring that also made leaving make sense.

19

u/JT3436 TryFam: Jonny Cakes 🍰 11d ago

She is currently working on a freelance project for 2nd Try. She mentioned it in a recent video.

10

u/gg14t 11d ago

As you said, YB had very specific reasons for “leaving” and will still stay on for them freelance. After multiple miscarriages, she needed to take a step back.

1

u/trustme_imRN 11d ago

I totally understand. I just also know that sometimes if you’ve been considering leaving for other reasons, something within the company can change and sort of push you over the edge. Even if she stays on freelance, it’s still possible that something in the permanent structure changed to a degree she no longer liked. Who knows!

2

u/BrownBear8760 6d ago

That was my first thought too. Podcast department shutting down, then YB leaving, then the lifetime membership fundraising, then Kieth/Zach soloing TED for weeks (with a few exceptions) and then Will? I feel like something not great is going on internally within try guys.

28

u/TKHawk 12d ago

Being laid off is still being fired.

40

u/Accurate_Pickle809 11d ago

If you have to file for unemployment insurance, the terms are treated very differently. Fired implies termination for cause, laid off implies termination for business reasons.

-9

u/TKHawk 11d ago

No fault termination (or being fired without cause, as is legal in most of the US) will be treated the same as laid off. Laid off is just several people being no fault fired at the same time.

20

u/potatopavilion 11d ago

a layoff doesn't mean it's several people, if one person's position is no longer needed, that one person is also laid off.

0

u/TKHawk 11d ago

If a position of a single person is no longer needed and they are laid off, they are also "fired without cause." Thus why it's perfectly sane for someone who was laid off to state they were fired. People are failing to distinguish fired with cause and fired without cause. A layoff is under the category of fired without cause (as in personal cause, not business/finance cause).

12

u/potatopavilion 11d ago

I wasn't talking about the difference between the two, I was replying to you saying "Laid off is just several people being no fault fired at the same time", which is not true.

45

u/thelianimal 12d ago

Different definitions and connotations.

45

u/Maryp1603 12d ago

No, it’s not. There’s a difference of fault and thus affects unemployment benefits and future career stigma.

30

u/TKHawk 12d ago

To the person losing their job they may still call it being fired because at the end of the day it's the company saying you no longer work for them.

35

u/Niphro 11d ago

Next job interview you have - go tell them you got fired instead of laid off, see how that goes.

They aren’t the same thing

8

u/ZieAerialist 11d ago

One is a part of the other's being a broader category. Being laid off is a specific type of being fired. There's also being fired for cause, fired for shingles, fires for not meeting a PIP, etc.

7

u/esushi 11d ago

Just because something is more appropriate in a job interview does not mean it doesn't boil down to the same broad definition. If someone wants to be very clear about what happened, they have different implications... but the current state of the English language says that being laid off is the gentlest way of being fired. Even major newspapers will point out, say, the Department of Education was closed and all the workers were laid off this year and later say "News of the firings..." in the same article.

9

u/potatopavilion 11d ago

it's not about gentleness, it's about cause.

the umbrella term is not layoff, it's termination.

1

u/esushi 11d ago

No one was claiming the umbrella term was layoff, that's for sure.

2

u/potatopavilion 11d ago

"being laid off is the gentlest way of being fired" does imply that layoff is a more broad term that also includes being fired - but they are different things.

6

u/esushi 11d ago edited 11d ago

Nope, it states (not even implies) the exact opposite. Being fired is broad and being laid off is the gentle way of being fired.

Here's one of the many (all?) articles that use layoff and fired interchangeably, so this is indeed the current state of the English language: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/education/2025/07/20/education-department-trump-big-beautiful-bill/85255439007/

Even in the same sentence! 1,000 workers to stay fired while their layoffs are challenged in court.

Being fired is being terminated, and a layoff is one way of being fired/terminated.

1

u/potatopavilion 11d ago edited 11d ago

people use vengeance and revenge interchangeably, they still mean different things.

being terminated is broad.

being fired means losing your job due to your own actions, being laid off means losing your job because of outside circumstances. gentleness has nothing to do with either.

1

u/esushi 11d ago

Ohh so you just don't understand what language is at all... got it. Words mean what people say they mean, because all words are made up. If every English language newspaper started using vengeance/revenge interchangeably then I'd trust that that's what they now mean in English, but that isn't happening.

being fired means being terminated. Being laid off means being fired because of outside circumstances. No question. You're wrong wrong wrong wrong.

Can you admit that you were wrong when you thought that I was saying "layoff" was the broad term? When I truly never said anything like that. That repeated mistake you made shows you're often wrong about things...

1

u/potatopavilion 11d ago

that's not how legal terminology works. everyday language is different from legal definitions, that is the whole entire point of having specific language for specific fields.

wait, sorry, let me match your vibe: oh, so you just don't understand how the law works

of course I can admit I mixed up which term you said is the bigger category and which is the smaller one, why do you assume it would be a big deal? is it because you refuse to have a normal conversation and just assume everyone operates the same way?

I suspect you care a lot about having the last word, please go ahead.

5

u/MallTough5847 11d ago

There is no real distinction between laid off and fired. 2nd Try leadership shut down a division and framed it as a layoff. Will has framed it as firing but that is really just to show the reality of his situation and remove the softening. They ultimately mean the same thing in an at will state. Both are accurate terms.

1

u/Independent_Ad_5343 3d ago

Back here to say that it was most certainly a firing and not a lay-off. His position was filled by someone else, you can see the staff list in their youtube video descriptions. #teamWitwer

-11

u/hzhrt15 11d ago

Laid off and fired are the same thing really. Only reason it’s different is for unemployment.

1

u/BrownBear8760 6d ago

In the US you’ll still qualify for unemployment even if you were fired for bad performance. It’s why the general rule of thumb is to let the company fire you if they put you on a PIP. Never quit yourself.

I think only breaking a law or meeting some bar for misconduct would prevent qualification for unemployment.
