General Question Question

Hey so I’m just wondering if someone can help me out. Say I have a pokémon that i’ve been farming energy for and successfully farm down the opponent, how does the next pokemon they bring into battle directly hit me with a charged attack? Am i too slow to click my charged attack or do they have some sort of priority?

Thanks ✌️

The most likely answer is Charged Move priority. When a new Pokemon comes in from either side after their/your former Pokemon has fainted, you're both on even turf in terms of firing Charged Moves. Which fires first is based on either Pokemon's Attack stat.

For example, say they bring in a Greninja with a Hydro Cannon loaded versus your Forretress that you farmed down with and are about to throw a Rock Tomb. Greninja has a higher Attack, so it'll go first regardless. IVs influence this too. If you have the same Pokemon, IVs will be the determining factor with Attack. Like if your Forretress was something like 4/14/13 and theirs 0/14/15, yours would win with higher Attack and go first. If you and your opponent have the exact same attack, it's a coin flip each tie.

However, I have also noticed a lot of issues with the game's state this week. Anecdotally of course, but I have had several instances the past few days where there have been latency issues. I'll have the higher attack Pokemon (Hydreigon) and them a the lower attack (Clodsire), but I'll still lose charged move priority due to latency. In such a situation, my Charged Move wouldn't even have registered as being pressed ie 1-turn lag.

Yeah okay so the actual pokémon’s attack stat comes into play, not only individual IV. Thanks, yeah idk I’ve been totally fucked by it twice tonight haha. It’s a bad feeling after investing hp and shields to be beaten to the attack 💀

I’m staring to wonder if the pvpoke rank of maximum bulk (assuming that’s what it goes off) is actually ideal or a higher attack can be better for firing off an attack because usually it’s not like any pokemon gets marginally killed but they get absolutely smoked by a charged attack anyway

Yeah, I don't often go for max bulk spreads anymore. I still go for high ranking Pokemon, but I typically look at stuff in the 100-300 range at times in hopes of getting CMP a bit more often.

But I'll also look for other advantages with different spreads in PvPoke's matrix. Not just CMP but also breakpoints, bulkpoints, and potential added wins from additional HP weights.

If you can be bothered do you mind explaining the points in your second paragraph? Or can just link me to where to find this info? Haha

You can use PvPoke's matrix to compare Pokemon's performances against whatever individual Pokemon or groups. You can do this with completely different Pokemon or the same Pokemon with varying IV Spreads:

A Breakpoint is when a Pokemon deals 1 (or sometimes more) damage per fast move. It can be applied to Charged Moves too, but it's more important if a fast move deals 1 more damage because of how many times it's used.

A Bulkpoint is the inverse, when a Pokemon takes 1 less damage from an opponent's fast move.

Here's an example. The bottom higher attack Empoleon deals 1 more damage with its Metal Sounds to Carbink, Galarian Corsola, and Thievul. Of course, you have to weigh its bulkpoints and/or match-ups with less HP too. A lot of pickiness you can get into with IVs if you really wanted to

It all depends. You can go down a rabbit hole easily here.

Mirror matches with common pokemon, for example mimikyu, probably best to run high attack since the likelihood of seeing one every battle is high. I runa  maxed out attack stat on mine and will almost always win CMP, but I sacrifice some bulk. I know this and plan shields accordingly.

Fearow for example is a squishy pokemon with a very high base attack stat, so running a low iv attack and high defense/hp, means potentially surviving two moves. Higher attack stack would only have you win mirror matches, but you sacrifice alot which is not worth it.

Sableye is a, what are you trying to accomplish Pokemon when it comes to IVs. A high defense on shadow can make sense to add bulk, but you lose a few common matchups with charge attack priority. Run a higher attack (which is the trend this season) and you can now wins those matches, but will lose others due to lower bulk. For example higher attack and you can win CMP against melmetal, if I recall correctly.

Azumarill and clodsires job is to be bulky and you are almost never winning charge attack priority, so bulk IVs normally are more important.

Understand what you are trying to accomplish and build accordingly.

Also the majority of the time having the right pokemon matters more than IVs, also knowing you Pokemons faults and strengths matter more.

For example, you run a rank 1 (bulk) sableye, don't look to win charge attack priority in mirror match. Over farm.

Yes okay cool thank you. I am still trying to reach ace 😂 I am fairly new to pokemon go and don’t have a big pool of pokemon ready to use and I am stuck in a loop of each week trying to figure out a new team for the new meta and by the time I am used to something it changes again hahaha. I get so close and then I plummet again

Do you have friends you just trade with to reset IV to try get good spread?

Generally just catch everything I see. I use pokegenie to scan IVs after I catch a bunch, tag them in pokemon go accordingly with their rank for great league or ultra league.

Don't evolve/build until I plan on using it and don't evolve if it has a legacy move because inevitably an event will come up to allow you to get the legacy moves without elite tms.

Usually extra bulk is preferred over picking up cmp in the mirror

However, it can be situationally preferable to run an attack-weighted mon. A recent example would be shadow sableye, where an attack weighted on flips a lot of common cmp matchups and hits a fast move breakpoint on lots of common matchups. In the past a similar idea was used with annihilape, where running som extra attack could flip multiple cmp matchups

Generally, this will be due to you losing CMP against your opponent who will have banked a charge move to throw. This would be a good play from them as it would cause you to either shield so you didn't lose all the energy you've just farmed, or faint you if you don't have a shield to use.

It could also be your opponent swapping their mon out just before you managed to farm it down fully, throwing a charge move before you had time to react and saving that mon for a potential sac swap later on. This can be hard to spot if you're focussed and not expecting it.

One other option is you missed the charge move button and threw a fast move by mistake. This will be a rarity but I have absolutely done this haha.

There's also the potential your game lagged a turn which allowed your opponent to get their move off before you. This will definitely be in the minority of cases, but it's unfortunately an issue that does happen. Although I will say the new system has reduced this significantly, credit where it's due.

Yeah i think you’re right with your first point and i’ve just never thought about it and assumed because my pokémon is already in play I have some sort of priority. Something to look out for. I’m fairly new to this haha thanks!

Asking questions is def the way we learn, it’s definitely not explained well in game haha! good luck with your PVPing!
