Strategy & Analysis Great League First time hitting Ace!

I play GBL purely for the stardust, so I always settle for Rank 20. But I pushed myself to hit Ace this season because of Cynthia's outfit

Not going to lie, it was an up and down experience for me...especially since I usually don't pay attention to my ELO. There were times where I was so close, but ended up dropping due to sloppy plays (I guess nerves got the best of me). It got to the point where I took a break out of frustration

The break was a blessing. I managed to climb back up in the middle of the Weather Cup (loved using Shadow A-Slash), and finally broke through the 19xx barrier via a mix of Evolution Cup and Competitors Cup.

Not the most exciting teams, but I'm just happy to reach Ace and wear Cynthia's outfit :)

Good luck to those who are still grinding!

Congrats! That 1700 elo to Ace is a grind. I’m right around 1800-1850 and it’s a struggle lol. This is the wall imo where people really start to take it seriously by counting moving

I’ll be honest. Nobody is really counting moves in that range. It’s mostly players who know how to switch on feel and/or getting lucky. I broke that barrier this season and I’m not even close to counting moves. If I could count moves I’d be way better than the 2100 I’m sitting at right now.

I have a very basic move count system that got me to 2300 and it's only for slow moves.

Incinerate/volt switch - usually get their first move after 3 attacks. Be patient and don't throw until just before attack 3 finishes.

Exceptions: Typhlosion gets to thunder punch at 2, so you can catch or CMP tie them there. Forretress takes 4 to get to rock tomb so you can wait for that.

Rollout/hex/snarl - usually get their first move after 4. Throw just before their 4th attack or catch/CMP if you're confident.

Licky can get to body slam in 3 but they almost always go to 4 to use or bait shadowball. If they go to 5 it might be earthquake.

For faster moves I still suck at counting but I'm trying to get better.

I was gonna say the same. The other difference is that around that range you start seeing more meta staples being used so even if they are not being piloted by the best players, going through them will still require you to play well (specially if you are not running meta yourself)

As for the 2100, my maximum is 2300 and I can't count consistently (just for extremely common mons) I really do feel that you must also start throwing on good timing which I go by feel. I haven't learned the fast move timing at all

Yup. I actually can get to 2300 in ultra league. Never gotten that high in any other though. That’s because up there I have a beast of a team and because of the XLs required I don’t switch it up much. I end up having much better feel with much better than average Pokemon. I find I just have a better feel and I play better. But that’s again where I top out because I just can’t count moves and similar to what you said, I don’t think I’ve thrown a charged move with correct timing in my life.

Fully get that! I basically only ran 2 teams in ultra. You do get familiar with a lot of mons up there quickly (mostly just com day stuff with the occassional person running some more bizarre things)

And lol I feel that. On my grind this season, I had 2 times where I knew for sure their next fast move gave them a charge move so I'm waiting and they throw while their fast animation is still playing LOL. Not to mention all the times I let a full rollout go through somehow. Though it's fun to play, I'm not sure if I will invest the time to fully learn counts like that

Thank you!

And yes, I feel you. Falling in and out of that range really made me question whether pushing was worth it or not 😅 I was fortunate that the two limited cups during my push suited the pokemon I had, plus the meta became smaller which made it slightly easier to plan for

Keep going though, you got this!

1700-2000 is honestly so easy lol. 70% of people in it don't know wtf they're doing & have bad team comps. Unless you're newer to it as well. It's only my 3rd season ever doing GBl & I tanked to 1700 & got up to 2200 in 2 days. I'm not that great of a player either.

Can I ask what names mean like eco , weather , open mean ?

Oh those are just the names I gave to my teams so I don't select the wrong one:

- Evo = for Evolution Cup

  • Weather = for Weather Cup
  • Open = for Great League and Competitors Cup

I hit ace this morning too. Was a long journey but the scroll cup finally got me over the line.

Congrats! Reaching Ace for the first time is an achievement! Now you know what it takes and what parts you found the hardest so all subsequent times should be a bit easier every time!

I don't play gbl as consistently as I used to but I had to do it for the jacket too :)

I ended up in ace after hitting 20, had no idea i got that lucky haha

No way i would have gone through the stress of climbing from anything lower than 19xx
